Book English Revenge Drama

Download or read book English Revenge Drama written by Linda Woodbridge and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-09-16 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vengeance permeates English Renaissance drama - for example, it crops up in all but two of Shakespeare's plays. This book explores why a supposedly forgiving Christian culture should have relished such bloodthirsty, vengeful plays. A clue lies in the plays' passion for fairness, a preoccupation suggesting widespread resentment of systemic unfairness - legal, economic, political and social. Revengers' precise equivalents - the father of two beheaded sons obliges his enemy to eat her two sons' heads - are vigilante versions of Elizabethan law, where penalties suit the crimes: thieves' hands were cut off, scolds' tongues bridled. The revengers' language of 'paying' hints at the operation of revenge in the service of economic redress. Revenge makes contact with resistance theory, justifying overthrow of tyrants, and some revengers challenge the fundamental inequity of social class. Woodbridge demonstrates how, for all their sensationalism, their macabre comedy and outlandish gore, Renaissance revenge plays do some serious cultural work.

Book Dante s Vision and the Circle of Knowledge

Download or read book Dante s Vision and the Circle of Knowledge written by Giuseppe Mazzotta and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a masterly synthesis of historical and literary analysis, Giuseppe Mazzotta shows how medieval knowledge systems--the cycle of the liberal arts, ethics, politics, and theology--interacted with poetry and elevated the Divine Comedy to a central position in shaping all other forms of discursive knowledge. To trace the circle of Dante's intellectual concerns, Mazzotta examines the structure and aims of medieval encyclopedias, especially in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries; the medieval classification of knowledge; the battle of the arts; the role of the imagination; the tension between knowledge and vision; and Dante's theological speculations in his constitution of what Mazzotta calls aesthetic, ludic theology. As a poet, Dante puts himself at the center of intellectual debates of his time and radically redefines their configuration. In this book, Mazzotta offers powerful new readings of a poet who stands amid his culture's crisis and fragmentation, one who responds to and counters them in his work. In a critical gesture that enacts Dante's own insight, Mazzotta's practice is also a fresh contribution to the theoretical literary debates of the present. Originally published in 1992. Book excerpt: The famous pilgrimage route Camino de Santiago becomes the setting for vengeance by two brothers and a former Basque terrorist. Their killings frighten villagers and interrupt the pilgrimage of FBI Agent Ward Crimmons, who is walking the Camino in memory of his deceased wife, along with his brother-in-law, a general in Spain's famous Civil Guard. As victims multiply and Spanish police search for clues, Ward learns some of the country's dark history and becomes unexpectedly involved in trying to find the killers. Revenge on the Camino is the first book in a trilogy introducing Agent Crimmons and spanning the Camino de Santiago. He arrives in Europe as the first brutal murder takes place over a hundred miles away. Readers walk the trail with him, experiencing the captivating scenery and legends of the Camino while, elsewhere, investigators try to get inside the minds of the killers. Story lines merge and lead to a riveting climax, leaving us to wonder whether Ward himself could become a target.
