Book The Pilgrim Faith Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Pilgrim Faith Classic Reprint written by Ozora S. Davis and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pilgrim Faith In a few years the three-hundredth anniversary of the landing of the Pilgrim Fathers at Plymouth will be celebrated. In anticipation of this event, and for its own sake as well, it is fitting that an estimate of the achievements of the Congregationalists in America and of their representatives in foreign lands should be made. This is undertaken in the following pages. No attempt has been made to write a history of the churches that hold the Pilgrim Faith nor to discuss the form of church government which they maintained. Nor has the subject been treated exhaustively. Many events and names have been omitted, not because they have been forgotten, but on account of space limitations. We have endeavored to give prominence to those movements and leaders which represent in a typical way the genius of the Pilgrim Faith and exemplify its contribution to the spiritual history of the last three centuries. Book The Pilgrim Faith Maintained

Download or read book The Pilgrim Faith Maintained written by Faber Debonsat and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pilgrim Faith Maintained: An Exhibit of the Calvarminian Doctrine as Found in Vital Theology When the Pastor of a Pilgrim People speaks out, it should be in words sober as well/ as sound. And if anything in this essay should seem less genial or more severe than necessary, it may be charitably attributed to oversight, under the pres sure of the present crisis. Let a man in his boyhood accept the Gospel of Christ, and thenceforward study and preach it through a long life, finding it more and more pre cions, in its orthodox purity essentially as taught by the Fathers; and then let him see the whole fabric suddenly undermined by a New Creed, with the essential points of their faith left out, a creed set forth as henceforward the standard of his whole denomination, with the ministerial settlements and church relations generally being fast conformed thereto; and it must not be wondered, if he feels impelled to break silence, and utter a faint remonstrance in the name of his Master. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Progressive Religious Thought in America: A Survey of the Enlarging Pilgrim Faith The development of religious thought in America, as elsewhere, is closely bound up With the Wider movement of thought of which it is a. Part. Yet it has a certain continuity of its own which calls for more careful study than it has received. This becomes increasingly clear as the attention given to the history of European theology is compared to that which American theology has won.' Whatever the disparity, I. A. Domer Closed his History of Protestant Theology with a survey of American theology. It occupies three pages out of a thousand; but it was written in 1867. Book The Pilgrim Essays on Religion Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Pilgrim Essays on Religion Classic Reprint written by T. R. Glover and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pilgrim Essays on Religion A Volume of collected papers must have some central idea, and perhaps that central idea is given clearly enough in the title and in the article that stands first. All the sections of the book turn upon the spiritual life, and on that interpretation of it which we find in the New Testament, in its precursors and in those who in art and life have developed and elucidated it. The study of Jeremiah appeared in the Expositor. "The Meaning of Christmas Day" was written at the request of the Y.M.C.A. for distribution in the British Army, and it was reprinted, I understand, by the wish of the American Y.M.C.A. for the American Expeditionary Force. Two other papers in a somewhat different form were in a small booklet, once published by the Student Christian Movement under the title of Vocation, and now out of print. Others rest on contributions to the Nation and other journals, but have been completely rewritten. Four at any rate have not been in my writing before. Download or read book The Last Century of Congregationalism Or the Influence on Church and State of the Faith and Polity of the Pilgrim Fathers Classic Reprint written by William W. Patton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Last Century of Congregationalism, or the Influence on Church and State of the Faith and Polity of the Pilgrim Fathers At the birth of our nation, in 1776 - a little over a 'century and a half from the landing of the Pilgrims - it is supposed that the Congregational Churches numbered about seven hundred, with not quite so large a number of ministers. No statistics exist of the communicants, but they could scarcely have averaged over one hundred to a church, making seventy thousand in all. It is a simple thing to turn to the carefully prepared statistical tables of [the Congregational Quarterly, and ascertain our present strength, which is as follows: Churches, ministers, membership, This indicates an increase of not quite five-fold. The increase is moderate, at best, while it falls far behind that of other denominations which have been running the race at our side. It will do us good to study a little into this phenomenon. His status as the head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith made him one of the most discussed churchmen in recent history. On the occasion of Ratzingers's seventy-fifth birthday, his former students selected essays, lectures, letters, and conferences that Ratzinger has written in recent years- writing that they feel best represents his position on issues of theology, the modern world, secularism, non-Christian religious, and other key topics of the Catholic Church. This book, characterized by Ratzinger's concisely reasoned style, is an invaluable resource to those who wish to understand the modern Church and the thinking of Pope Benedict XVI, as well as a treasured volume for those who are students of Ratzinger's theology.

Download or read book Grace Abounding written by John Bunyan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although this book was written more than 300 years ago, The Pilgrim's Progress continues to be reprinted and gain new readers throughout the years. It has also been published in no less than 200 languages and is widely read the world over, so much so that it is said to be second to the Bible in terms of readership. The author sails through his narrative without dividing it into chapters. Instead, he separates his saga into 2 parts. He begins with a poetic Apology before taking readers to the first-person account of Christian, the Pilgrim and main protagonist of this Christian-themed story. The Pilgrim Christian's experience is the highlight of the first part of the book. The second part reveals the experiences of Christian's wife, Christiana, as well as his four sons. In part I, they did not accompany Christian on his pilgrimage as they could not be persuaded to do so. In part II, they decide to go through the same route that Christian took and went through various difficulties unique to them. The other characters in the book are named after certain personality attributes. Obstinate, Formalist, Hopeful, and Faithful are just some of them. In addition, some settings and places are named after Biblical locations, such as Mount Zion and Mount Sinai. This particular 1910 edition comes with beautiful monochromatic and highly detailed illustrations by Frank C. Pape. Christian readers definitely will enjoy reading and learning from this allegorical story more with the inclusion of Pape's images.
