Book That Time of Year

Download or read book That Time of Year written by Garrison Keillor and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2020-12-01 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the warmth and humor we've come to know, the creator and host of A Prairie Home Companion shares his own remarkable story. In That Time of Year, Garrison Keillor looks back on his life and recounts how a Brethren boy with writerly ambitions grew up in a small town on the Mississippi in the 1950s and, seeing three good friends die young, turned to comedy and radio. Through a series of unreasonable lucky breaks, he founded A Prairie Home Companion and put himself in line for a good life, including mistakes, regrets, and a few medical adventures. PHC lasted forty-two years, 1,557 shows, and enjoyed the freedom to do as it pleased for three or four million listeners every Saturday at 5 p.m. Central. He got to sing with Emmylou Harris and Renée Fleming and once sang two songs to the U.S. Supreme Court. He played a private eye and a cowboy, gave the news from his hometown, Lake Wobegon, and met Somali cabdrivers who’d learned English from listening to the show. He wrote bestselling novels, won a Grammy and a National Humanities Medal, and made a movie with Robert Altman with an alarming amount of improvisation. He says, “I was unemployable and managed to invent work for myself that I loved all my life, and on top of that I married well. That’s the secret, work and love. And I chose the right ancestors, impoverished Scots and Yorkshire farmers, good workers. I’m heading for eighty, and I still get up to write before dawn every day.”

Book Rollers and All about Them

    Book Details:
  • Author : E. Chapman
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2016-12-01
  • ISBN : 9781540631756
  • Pages : 72 pages

Download or read book Rollers and All about Them written by E. Chapman and published by . This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a 2016 edited transcription of the rare and long-out-of-print classic 1934 book Rollers and All About Them by the 19th/20th century pigeon fancier E. R. B. Chapman. His experience with domesticated pigeons, both fancy and performing varieties, dated from 1883 to the early 1940s, sixty-some years. Moreover, during that time he wrote a number of short brochures and book chapters on different aspects of the pigeon hobby. This particular book presents Mr. Chapman's understanding of the history of different kinds of Roller pigeons, including Birmingham Rollers and Oriental Rollers, their various styles of flight and performance, and his views on housing, breeding, training, and generally caring for them. He appears to have lived his whole life in the same home at 119 Franklin Street in Stoneham, Massachusetts, during which time he developed a strain of Roller pigeons known simply as Stoneham Rollers. Although contemporary readers may justifiably conclude that the organization of the book leaves a bit to be desired, rather than improving upon its organization, this transcription assiduously held to Mr. Chapman's actual original sequence of topics and narrative style. The only real editing consisted of correcting misspellings and, here and there, properly joining fragmented sentences into coherent wholes for the purpose of improving clarity and overall readability. In the end, the book remains pretty much exactly as E. R. B. Chapman wrote it. And indeed, that is entirely fitting, in that he was an intelligent and articulate man who said what he meant and meant what he said. The hobby of breeding and training Roller pigeons has come a long way since 1934, but Rollers and All About Them is still very much worth reading by anyone interested in how we got to where we are today. Finally, this new version of the book answers, for the very first time in living memory, the long-lingering question: What the heck do the E, the R, and the B in that famous name "E. R. B. Chapman" stand for anyhow?

Book The Structuring of Organizations

Download or read book The Structuring of Organizations written by Henry Mintzberg and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synthesizes the empirical literature on organizationalstructuring to answer the question of how organizations structure themselves --how they resolve needed coordination and division of labor. Organizationalstructuring is defined as the sum total of the ways in which an organizationdivides and coordinates its labor into distinct tasks. Further analysis of theresearch literature is neededin order to builda conceptualframework that will fill in the significant gap left by not connecting adescription of structure to its context: how an organization actuallyfunctions. The results of the synthesis are five basic configurations (the SimpleStructure, the Machine Bureaucracy, the Professional Bureaucracy, theDivisionalized Form, and the Adhocracy) that serve as the fundamental elementsof structure in an organization. Five basic parts of the contemporaryorganization (the operating core, the strategic apex, the middle line, thetechnostructure, and the support staff), and five theories of how it functions(i.e., as a system characterized by formal authority, regulated flows, informalcommunication, work constellations, and ad hoc decision processes) aretheorized. Organizations function in complex and varying ways, due to differing flows -including flows of authority, work material, information, and decisionprocesses. These flows depend on the age, size, and environment of theorganization; additionally, technology plays a key role because of itsimportance in structuring the operating core. Finally, design parameters aredescribed - based on the above five basic parts and five theories - that areused as a means of coordination and division of labor in designingorganizational structures, in order to establish stable patterns of behavior.(CJC).
