Book The Practice of Piety

Download or read book The Practice of Piety written by Lewis Bayly and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2023-12-20 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Practice of Piety is a classic of devotional and edification literature that offers readers insight into faith in the early 17th century. The author, Lewis Bayly, urges the reader to contemplate his own position of sinfulness and decay in light of God's grace. The book centers on ways to meditate and pray in the face of death, illness, and the challenges of everyday life. While author's approach may seem anachronistic from the modern point of view, there is much that can still enrich one's spiritual and devotional life today.

As a gentle and reverent depiction of whole practice of Anglican moral theology and practice, it is splendid.”—The Anglican Theological Review Written in a style accessible to non-specialists, this book provides teachers, pastors, counselors, and general readers with an ideal introduction to Christian ethics. It renews the topic of Christian ethics by showing readers that faithful moral living is achieved through the daily practices of grace and godliness. The author first explores the foundations of Christian ethics as seen by both Catholics and Protestants, and then develops a constructive view of morality as a way of life. Taking into account the central themes of Christian ethics, he shows that effective piety is built on spiritual disciplines that deepen our experience of God: prayer, worship, self-examination, simplicity, and acts of hospitality.

Download or read book The Christian Moral Life written by Timothy F. Sedgwick and published by Church Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2008-11 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, a re-issue of the 1999 edition, demonstrates that the way of life we call Christian is lived in relationships to others. Christian faith, understood as practical piety, calls for a life opened to the world at large, concerned for the "stranger" as well as for the neighbor. Sedgwick further emphasizes that the Christian life is grounded in the experience and worship of God. His work thus develops Christian ethics as "sacramental ethics," an ethic that has at its center a deepening encounter with God. Written in a style accessible to non-specialists, this book provides teachers, pastors, counselors, and general readers with an ideal introduction to Christian ethics. It renews the topic of Christian ethics by showing readers that faithful moral living is achieved through the daily practices of grace and godliness. Book Practicing Piety in Medieval Ashkenaz

Download or read book Practicing Piety in Medieval Ashkenaz written by Elisheva Baumgarten and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2014-11-07 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the urban communities of medieval Germany and northern France, the beliefs, observances, and practices of Jews allowed them to create and define their communities on their own terms as well as in relation to the surrounding Christian society. Although medieval Jewish texts were written by a learned elite, the laity also observed many religious rituals as part of their everyday life. In Practicing Piety in Medieval Ashkenaz, Elisheva Baumgarten asks how Jews, especially those who were not learned, expressed their belonging to a minority community and how their convictions and deeds were made apparent to both their Jewish peers and the Christian majority. Practicing Piety in Medieval Ashkenaz provides a social history of religious practice in context, particularly with regard to the ways Jews and Christians, separately and jointly, treated their male and female members. Medieval Jews often shared practices and beliefs with their Christian neighbors, and numerous notions and norms were appropriated by one community from the other. By depicting a dynamic interfaith landscape and a diverse representation of believers, Baumgarten offers a fresh assessment of Jewish practice and the shared elements that composed the piety of Jews in relation to their Christian neighbors.

Download or read book Beyond Piety written by Gilberto Cavazos-González OFM and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-08-01 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who doesn't want a liberated life? Jesus offers us liberation as we grow in a Christian spiritual life. But first we need to liberate our concept of Christian Spirituality from ideas that relegate it to Church on Sunday, new age self help, devotional or ascetical practices, or fundamentalist aggression. Traditionally, Christian spirituality liberates Jesus' disciples from personal sin and helps them to challenge sin's social consequences so that once liberated, they will work to liberate others. Christian spirituality (living the Gospel) brings good news for the poor, liberty for the captives, recovery of sight for the blind, and freedom for the oppressed. This is what Jesus came to do, and this is what we as his disciples are called to do as we live our Christian callings in the world. Whether we are at home, work, or play we are called to be Christian. Beyond Piety invites readers to grow in their understanding of what it means to be a disciple of Christ. More than a book on Franciscan or Hispanic Spirituality, this book is about the Christian Spirituality all Christians are called to live. It is about our human and Christian identity and the God we believe in. It is about getting to know the Word of God and letting that Word get to know us. It is about worship and religious devotion and moving beyond piety to Christian action. It is about the call to justice and liberation.
