Book The Picture Exchange Communication System PECS and Its Effect on Communicative Abilities in Rubinstein Taybi Syndrome

Download or read book The Picture Exchange Communication System PECS and Its Effect on Communicative Abilities in Rubinstein Taybi Syndrome written by Danielle R. Monica and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Rubinstein-Taybi Syndrome (RTS) is a rare congenital neurodevelopmental disorder that often presents with corresponding speech and language delays. However, the available literature on communicative development in RTS is currently very limited. The purpose of this retrospective single-case research study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), an aided augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) system developed to teach functional communication to children with limited communication, on communicative abilities in RTS by providing a detailed profile of the intervention procedures utilized for a 6-year-old child with RTS. The aim of this investigation was both to contribute to the existing literature on the syndrome, as well as to document the success of the PECS system in children with RTS. Specifically, the current study explored the participant communicative progression and development in the areas of (a) communication initiation, (b) vocalization, and (c) eye contact after Phases 1-4 of the PECS protocol were implemented. Data records from 26 evaluation and intervention sessions completed during the participant Spring 2014 attendance at the CSULB Department of Speech-Language Pathology Speech and Language Clinic were analyzed in order to evaluate the effects of the PECS protocol on the participant communicative abilities. Results indicated that the PECS treatment significantly improved the participant communicative abilities, namely, by increasing her initiation of communicative exchanges, increasing use of vocalizations and word/phrase approximations, and increasing eye contact with communication partners. The current study supports the use of the PECS protocol in children with RTS as a functional communication system.

Book The Effects of Mother implemented Picture Exchange Communication System Training on Spontaneous Communicative Behaviors of Young Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders

This book was released on 2009 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The current study examined whether mothers could be taught to implement the picture exchange communication system (PECS) training with their child and investigated the effects of the mother-implemented PECS training on the spontaneous communication of young children with autism spectrum disorders. Three mothers were trained to teach their child PECS Phases 1 through 3B and subsequently were asked to train their child to use PECS as a way of requesting a preferred item or activity. Results on mother's accuracy of implementing PECS training showed that all three mothers taught their child PECS with high integrity. A changing criterion design was used to demonstrate the effects of mother-implemented PECS training on children. Results indicated that all three children successfully acquired independent picture exchanges along with themother-implemented PECS training. Moreover, not only did all three children generalize PECS skills to an untrained communication partner, they also maintained the acquired skills over one month. Word vocalizations increased for one child, though no or limited improvement was observed for the other two. These findings extend the existing evidence on PECS by training mothers as primary implementers of PECS training and provide practitioners with insight into the feasibility and necessity of parent-implemented PECS training.

Book The Picture Exchange Communication System Training Manual

Download or read book The Picture Exchange Communication System Training Manual written by Lori Frost and published by . This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an updated description of The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS). It begins with a discussion of the "big picture," or the authors view on the importance of laying the foundation for communication training by systematically structuring the learning environment (be it in the home, community or school). This approach, The Pyramid Approach to Education, embraces the principals of broad-spectrum applied behavior analysis and emphasizes the development of functional communication skills, independent of communication modality. The Pyramid Approach is one of the few approaches that encourages creativity and innovation on the teacher's part through databased decision making.

Book The Effects of the Picture Exchange Communicstion System on the Social Communication Between Peers with and Without Disabilities

Download or read book The Effects of the Picture Exchange Communicstion System on the Social Communication Between Peers with and Without Disabilities written by Jodi Lynn Fant and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: For children with severe language delays and developmental disabilities, a functional communication system is very important because, without it, they may not able to communicate their needs and wants. It has been established that The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) is useful in teaching children a functional communication system. Schwartz and Garfinkle (1998) found PECS to be an effective tool in teaching social skills to children with disabilities. The purpose of the present research was to replicate the findings of Schwartz and Garfinkle and to extend the literature. A multiple baseline across behaviors (i.e., greetings, requests, and responses) was used to assess the effects of PECS on social communication between peers and also examine whether the use of PECS would be effective in increasing the spoken language of these children when communicating with peers. Results of this study indicated that PECS was an effective teaching tool in increasing social communication between peers and increasing spoken language. Social validity questionnaires determined that teachers and parents found the social communication skills to be important and that this intervention was helpful.

Book Assessing the Effectiveness of a Picture Exchange Communication System on Increasing Manding and Vocal Speech in Identical Twin Adults with Autism

Download or read book Assessing the Effectiveness of a Picture Exchange Communication System on Increasing Manding and Vocal Speech in Identical Twin Adults with Autism written by Laura C. Hilton and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the effectiveness of a Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) on increasing manding (i.e., making requests) and spontaneous vocalizations. Participants were a set of identical twin adult women, both with a diagnosis of autism. The main dependent variable was the number of mands emitted by the participants while utilizing PECS. During each phase of training, participants had to meet a specific criterion before receiving a preferred item. Once the participants met the criterion for each phase of PECS training, a new phase began. Spontaneous vocalizations were tracked during each phase of training to determine if, as previous studies have shown in children, spontaneous vocalizations increase during Phase IV of PECS training. Additionally, the percentage of sessions that were terminated as a result of aggressive responding were also tracked. A multiple-baseline across participant design was used in this research, with the training phases being implemented at different times for the two participants. Participants were assessed on their overall manding abilities (pointing, nodding, signing) as well as their use of pictures prior to the start of baseline. During baseline the participants averaged 0% use of pictures to mand for desired items. After PECS training was completed, the use of pictures to mand for desired items averaged 96.63% for participant 1 and 98.26% for participant 2. Two weeks, four weeks, and six weeks after training was completed, probe sessions were conducted to ensure that the participants had maintained their ability to communicate using PECS, and the participants averaged 100% usage of pictures to mand for desired items during the probe sessions. These results suggest that PECS, which has previously proven useful in teaching children with autism to mand, is also effective with adults. In contrast to previous findings with children, however, many of whom began to spontaneously verbalize during PECS training, the two adult participants in the present study did not verbalize. Participant 1 showed an overall decrease in the percentage of sessions terminated due to aggressive responding throughout training. Further research to examine the value of PECS training in teaching manding with adults, and to examine whether such training can generate vocalizations, is warranted.

Book The Effects of Picture Exchange Communication System Training on the Communication Behaviors of Young Children with Autism Or Severe Language Disabilities

Download or read book The Effects of Picture Exchange Communication System Training on the Communication Behaviors of Young Children with Autism Or Severe Language Disabilities written by Angela Welch and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Difficulties with communication, including impaired oral language and social relationships, are diagnostic characteristics of autism (American Psychiatric Association, 2000). The Picture Exchange Communication System was developed as an alternative for those with limited verbal skills, including people with autism, to communicate (Bondy & Frost 1994, 2001, 2002). Previous research has demonstrated its effectiveness with preschool children (Charlop-Christy, Carpenter, Loc, Leblanc, & Kellet, 2002; Frea, Arnold, & Vittimberga, 2001; Ganz, Parker, & Benson, 2009; Ganz & Simpson, 2004; Jurgens, Anderson, & Moore, 2009). A changing criterion design was used to examine the effects of PECS training on three young children with disabilities who were non-verbal and attended a preschool classroom. Two out of three of the children emitted independent picture exchanges in Phase 1 post-training probes. Time allowed for one participant to begin Phase 2 training, but he did not demonstrate independent picture exchanges. In contrast to previous research, the participants in this study failed to reach mastery due to several possible confounding variables. Limitations, directions for future research, and implications for practitioners will be discussed.

Book The Picture Exchange Communication System at Home

Download or read book The Picture Exchange Communication System at Home written by Meghan Nilsen and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) is an AAC often used with student diagnosed with ASD to supplement an existing mode of communication or provide a functional mode of communication where none exists or is limited. This quantitative study sought to determine if students with ASD were generalizing the communicative skills learned through the program, form school to home. Parents of children identified as currently using the PECS program in school, were surveyed. The results of this study were inconclusive due to several limitations, however educational implications were gathered and the information obtained can be used for further research.
