Students are genuinely surprised when things go wrong in a lesson. They don't realize that they only half-listen while practicing. When they do notice a problem, they simply play the passage over and over (cementing in the mistakes) and hope for the best. That's what most students call practicing. The Piano Student's Guide to Effective Practicing shows the student how to save time and build good practice habits. It helps the student solve specific problems with 58 concise practice tips clearly-explained drills and tactics for mastering challenging passages. Printed on heavy-coated stock for durability, the Guide is designed to be kept on the music desk for quick reference by the student when problems occur in daily practice. Practice tips are categorized to address issues of accuracy, balance, clarity, continuity, coordination, comfort, evenness, expression, fingering, rhythm and speed. The tips work for students at all stages and ages, including adults!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author, Victoria Stearns discusses her book, "Handbook for Piano Practice." As a lifelong piano teacher, I feel that more people could learn to play the piano, which leads the way to music appreciation and enjoyment, if they only knew how to practice efficiently. There would be progress instead of discouragement, and people would continue with music lessons instead of quitting them. For decades, I have searched for a book that stresses the important principles along with basic information, and never found anything. The book I have written, Handbook for Piano Practice, is the book I wish I had had as a student all those years ago. It is not a piano "method" but a friendly guide and companion, encouraging and providing all the pertinent material and necessary hints for good practice habits (with reasons given) and learning genuine piano literature. It is for students of all ages (including adult "restarters") from before the first lesson through the intermediate level, sufficient for secondary piano students as well. The keys to learning are efficient practice and learning how to listen. Most teachers do not have the time to delve into these matters, and these points need much repetition. I myself wasted many an hour with improper practice habits. If every piano student used this as a reference, there would be a great deal more enjoyment, appreciation, progress, learning, even attendance at musical events. The world would be a far better place if more people played music. Today we hear a great deal about stress reduction, Alzheimer's prevention, the need to keep learning, the need to relax. Music will accomplish all of the above and more in a most enjoyable way. Victoria Stearns, has two degrees in music from SUNY at Buffalo, one in music history and the other in piano performance [both summa cum laude] and also a master's degree in library science. She had additional study in music history at Yale. She has taught piano for almost five decades and has worked in music libraries in Buffalo and the Library of Congress, and also wrote music criticism for the Buffalo Evening News.

Book Piano Practice for the Advancing Student Continuing the Journey Begun in Handbook for Piano Practice For Students and Teachers

Download or read book Piano Practice for the Advancing Student Continuing the Journey Begun in Handbook for Piano Practice For Students and Teachers written by Victoria B. Stearns and published by Piano. This book was released on 2018-11-21 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book continues the journey begun in "Handbook for Piano Practice," published by William R. Parks www.wrparks.com Like its predecessor, it is not a method, but a guide to accompany piano studies. Now the emphasis is the canon of piano literature: the master composers and their works. The elements and techniques of each stylistic period are explained so that the student can establish a solid background, which in turn will also enrich music appreciation in general. More practice hints are included for this advancing level, with efficiency of learning a priority, along with suggestions for expanding one's musical repertoire and knowledge in general. There is so much information that cannot be absorbed in the time constraints of lessons, so the student needs a reference book.

This book was released on 2002-04-18 with total page 1249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring chapters by the world's foremost scholars in music education and cognition, this handbook is a convenient collection of current research on music teaching and learning. This comprehensive work includes sections on arts advocacy, music and medicine, teacher education, and studio instruction, among other subjects, making it an essential reference for music education programs. The original Handbook of Research on Music Teaching and Learning, published in 1992 with the sponsorship of the Music Educators National Conference (MENC), was hailed as "a welcome addition to the literature on music education because it serves to provide definition and unity to a broad and complex field" (Choice). This new companion volume, again with the sponsorship of MENC, explores the significant changes in music and arts education that have taken place in the last decade. Notably, several chapters now incorporate insights from other fields to shed light on multi-cultural music education, gender issues in music education, and non-musical outcomes of music education. Other chapters offer practical information on maintaining musicians' health, training music teachers, and evaluating music education programs. Philosophical issues, such as musical cognition, the philosophy of research theory, curriculum, and educating musically, are also explored in relationship to policy issues. In addition to surveying the literature, each chapter considers the significance of the research and provides suggestions for future study.Covering a broad range of topics and addressing the issues of music education at all age levels, from early childhood to motivation and self-regulation, this handbook is an invaluable resource for music teachers, researchers, and scholars.

Book What Every Piano Pupil Should Know

Download or read book What Every Piano Pupil Should Know written by Clarence Grant Hamilton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-21 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What Every Piano Pupil Should Know: A Manual for Piano Students Most of the books about the piano are written for teachers or i for advanced players. Here, however, is one that is written for you, and you alone - whether you are just a beginner or have been studying for some time. I know, from long experience, how many questions are continually popping into your mind-such as why you should attempt to play the piano, how you should practice, what the piano is made of, what kinds of music have been written for it, and by whom this music has been composed. So I have tried to an swer at least the most important of these questions, and to indicate how you may find answers to the others. It would be an excellent idea for you to read the book straight through, from cover to cover, so that you may not miss anything. You will gain still more if, during this reading, you try to answer the questions that are given at the end of each chapter. But if all this seems too much of a task, perhaps your teacher will refer you to certain sections, as questions arise; or, better still, you can look up whatever you need by consulting the headings and subtitles of the chapters. Anyway, I hope that in these pages you may find suggestions and explanations that will make your piano work clearer and pleasanter for you, and that will help you to realize what an unfailing joy music may become, if it be studied in the right way and in the right Spirit.
