Book The Physiology of the Compound Eyes of Insects and Crustaceans

Download or read book The Physiology of the Compound Eyes of Insects and Crustaceans written by Sigmund Exner and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-12-05 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exner's classic monograph describes the basic optical mechanisms in operation in compound eyes and, despite the passage of time, still remains a definitive work. Although his findings were seriously questioned during the modern revival of interest in compound eyes, all his major discoveries have now been validated. The principle of the lens cylinder and the elucidation of the mechanics of apposition and superposition optics are amongst his outstanding contributions. It also includes a broad survey of the optics and anatomy of the eyes of many insect and crustacean species, and the first explanation for the phenomena of pseudopupils and eyeglow. It has been faithfully translated from the original with annotations to aid the reader. The new edition, with a foreword by the late Karl von Frisch, also includes a concise illustrated appendix summarizing present knowledge of optical mechanisms in compound eyes and a useful bibliography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers published in this Volume are the fruits of a symposium held in Regensburg in April 1987. The meeting was held to com memorate two most significant events in the development of com pound eye research. In chronological order these are firstly, Sigmund Exner's seminal monograph on the physiology of compound eyes of crustaceans and insects, which was first published in Vienna in 1891, and is now shortly to appear for the first time in the English translation [Exner, S. (1989) The Physiology of the Compound Eyes of Insects and Crustaceans. Springer Berlin Heidelberg New York Tokyo]. Secondly, the meeting was also held in honour of Professor Hansjochem Autrum's 80th birthday. Professor Autrum, who is justly acknowledged as one of the pioneers of modern compound eye research, attended the meeting as the guest of honour. In keeping with these historical occasions, it has been our intention in this volume to present a comprehensive collection of short reviews covering the major aspects of compound eye research. Whilst the most up-to-date developments have been included in every field from optics, through photochemistry, phototransduction, integrative processes and behavior, an attempt has also been made to provide a historical perspective.

This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Compound Eyes in Crustaceans Essentially the same methods as those which I used in investigating the eyes in the lobster were employed in studying the eyes in other Crustaceans. As these methods have been described at some length in my paper on the lobster's eye (parker, pp. 3, further mention of them 'in this connection is unnecessary. Before proceeding to an account of the eyes in Crustaceans, a few statements should be made concerning the use of terms. In the fol lowing anatomical descriptions, I have very. Generally adhered to the Older and more established terms. It must be, admitted that some Of these, on account Of their derivation, are not entirely satisfactory, but because of their general acceptance I have chosen to retain them rather than to attempt to replace them by new ones. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Employing the clear, student-friendly style that made previous editions so popular, Insect Physiology and Biochemistry, Third Edition presents an engaging and authoritative guide to the latest findings in the dynamic field of insect physiology. The book supplies a comprehensive picture of the current state of the function, development, and reproduction of insects. Expanded and updated, this third edition continues to challenge conventional entomological wisdom with the latest research and analytical interpretations. It will appeal to undergraduate and graduate students and to working scientists in the biological sciences who need to possess a firm knowledge of the broad principles of insect physiology. See What’s New in the Third Edition: New chapters covering biological rhythms and insect symbioses Adds references from the last several years to bring each chapter up to date Provides new review and self-study questions that aid in distinguishing the most important information and concepts References to websites where illustrative materials have been provided by scientists and contains approximately 2,600 citations Twenty-four pages of color illustrations with new illustrations that emphasize genetic and molecular developments in insect biology Update of the rapidly developing area of postembryonic development of insects, especially the role of the juvenile hormone in insect development While this edition provides new information and significant updates, it also maintains all the features that made previous editions so popular, such as citations that enable you to get to the primary literature easily and understand the thinking, experimentation, and techniques that have enabled the current understanding of the physiology of insects. And clear writing with technical terms explained in the text where they occur. With more than 250 illustrations to help explain physiological concepts and important anatomical details, the book remains the most easily accessible guide to key concepts in the field.
