Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Physiology of Food and Economy in Diet This little manual has arisen from a course of public lectures given at University College, London, in October and November, 1916. It has been thought that a useful purpose might be served at the present time by making these lectures more generally accessible. Although no previous knowledge of physiology is assumed, references are inserted to sources of more detailed information on certain questions for those readers who may desire to enter more deeply into these questions. Occasionally, points of interest are indicated which, though unessential to the main argument, will be found to appeal to the reader possessing the necessary scientific preparation. I would especially acknowledge my indebtedness to the booklet by Wood and Hopkins, Food Economy in War-Time. Book Global Food Systems Diets and Nutrition

Download or read book Global Food Systems Diets and Nutrition written by Jessica Fanzo and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-06-05 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ensuring optimal diets and nutrition for the global population is a grand challenge fraught with many contentious issues. To achieve food security for all and protect health, we need functional, equitable, and sustainable food systems. Food systems are highly complex networks of individuals and institutions that depend on governance and policy leadership. This book explains how interconnected food systems and policies affect diets and nutrition in high-, middle-, and low-income countries. In tandem with food policy, food systems determine the availability, affordability, and nutritional quality of the food supply, which influences the diets that people are willing and able to consume. Readers will become familiar with both domestic and international food policy processes and actors, and they will be able to critically analyze and debate how policy and science affect diet and nutrition outcomes.

Book The Problem of Nutrition

  • Pages : 168 pages

Download or read book The Problem of Nutrition written by Josep Lluís Barona and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first decades of the 20th century were marked by a crisis. The impact of the Great War, the rise of the workers' revolutionary movement and the National Socialist expansion as well as the disaster of the 1929 crash and the great depression of the 1930s created a landscape of tension, radicalism and political instability. In this context, nutrition emerges as an excellent ground from which to explore the genesis of experimental knowledge, the social interests involved, and the transfer of knowledge and practices to public health, the economy, trade and politics. The exceptional confluence of all factors influencing the interwar period contributed to building the problem of nutrition. This book offers a wide perspective including international agencies committed to a global approach to define nutritional problems, agricultural reforms, surveys in different countries and rural areas, methodological agreements on nutritional standards, the main trends of experimental research, the dreadful impact of the war and some experiments developed in internment camps. The author examines nutrition as a cornerstone to show interactions between science, politics, economy and public health.

Book Physiological Economy in Nutrition

Download or read book Physiological Economy in Nutrition written by Russell H. Chittenden and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physiological Economy in Nutrition: With Special Reference to the Minimal, Proteid Requirement of the Healthy Man an Experimental Study First, however, we must have more definite information as to what the real necessities of the body for proteid food are, and this information can be obtained only by careful scientific experimentation under varying conditions. This has been the object of the present study, and the results obtained are now placed before the public with the hope that they will prove not only of scientific interest and value, but that they will also serve to arouse an interest in the minds of thought ful people in a subject which is surely of primary importance for the welfare of mankind. That the physical condition of the. Body exercises an all-powerful influence upon the mental state, and that a man's moral nature even is influenced by his bodily condition are equally certain; hence, the subject of nutrition, when once it is fully understood and its precepts obeyed, bids fair to exert a beneficial influence not only upon bodily conditions, but likewise upon the welfare of mankind in many other directions. In presenting the results of the experiments, herein de scribed, the writer has refrained from entering into lengthy discussions, preferring to allow the results mainly to speak for themselves. They are certainly sufficiently convincing and need no superabundance of words to give them value; indeed, such merit as the book possesses is to be found in the large number of consecutive results, which admit of no contradiction and need no argument to enhance their value. The results presented are scientific facts, and the conclusions they justify are self-evident. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It attempts to clarify the main issues and provides comprehensive recommendations for policymaking, especially since functional foods are being introduced into society at a particularly sensitive moment when food has become a main issue in public debates and a focal point of political activity in Europe.
