Case 68.--Illustrating almost universal spreading of placenta over uterus; flooding; death before delivery;. mother blanched; child full of blood.--(This case is referred to in Lecture I. It was originally published in my Memoir of 1847.) Case 69.--" Implantation of placenta over os internum, and to more than three-fourths of the whole superficies of the uterus; profuse haemorrhage; death before delivery; post-mortem examination.--Jane B, forty-one, has had eleven children, of which two were born dead; in her latter pregnancies has had flooding before delivery. August 14th, 1846, was in labour with her twelfth child, under the care of an unusually ignorant and obstinate midwife. From what could be gathered of the history, it appeared that pains came on at seven, P.M., of the 13th; flooding recurred at intervals during the night. At a quarter to six, A.M., on the 14th, she sank. Mr. Frost, of Nottinghill, was sent for in time to find her dead when he arrived. I assisted at the post-mortem examination. The woman was stout and well-developed. The skin was waxen and straw-yellow; the conjunctiva quite blanched. Examination per vaginam.--Os uteri was found dilated; placenta felt plugging up orifice completely. The presenting part of the child could not be felt. Brain.--A small quantity of blood in the sinuses; vascularity of membranes appeared normal; on incising

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Facts in Relation to Placenta Praevia: With a Review of the Various Opinions Respecting Its Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology and Treatment As it is possible that my previous paper may not have been seen by a large number of the profession, I consider it necessary to offer a few remarks from some of the latest authorities on this subject. Since 1862 I have examined a very considerable number (880) of pregnant females in the Bellevue hospital and Island hospitals, from eight months to full term, and the first stage of labor, and it only confirms the views expressed in the propositions. Book Respiratory Disease in Pregnancy

Download or read book Respiratory Disease in Pregnancy written by Stephen E. Lapinsky and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-04-09 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Respiratory diseases affect a large proportion of the population and can cause complications when associated with pregnancy. Pregnancy induces profound anatomical and functional physiological changes in the mother, and subjects the mother to pregnancy-specific respiratory conditions. Reviewing respiratory conditions both specific and non-specific to pregnancy, the book also addresses related issues such as smoking and mechanical ventilation. Basic concepts for the obstetrician are covered, including patient history, physiology and initial examinations. Topics such as physiological changes during pregnancy and placental gas exchange are discussed for the non-obstetrician. Guidance is practical, covering antenatal and post-partum care, as well as management in the delivery suite. An essential guide to respiratory diseases in pregnancy, this book is indispensable to both obstetricians and non-obstetric physicians managing pregnant patients.

Download or read book The Human Placenta written by C. Redman and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 1993-01-18 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The placenta is fascinating and complex. Basically foreign to the maternal body, it can be thought of as an organ transplanted onto the mother's host tissue. As such it embodies all the principles of tissue acceptance and rejection. Many of the risks of pregnancy and labor have now been eliminated and the placenta is likely to be at the root of many of the dangers to the unborn child that remain. A breakdown of the relationship between the placenta and the maternal tissue may turn out to be the cause of the majority of early lost pregnancies.
