Book The Physiological Action of Drugs

Download or read book The Physiological Action of Drugs written by M. S. Pembrey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Physiological Action of Drugs: An Introduction to Practical Pharmacology The experiments described in this elementary work have been made as simple as possible, so that they may be performed by a medical student. For a similar reason they have been limited to those operations which can be performed upon a brainless frog. The law relating to experiments on animals renders necessary the destruction of the animal's cerebral hemispheres. It is hoped that this small work may be of some value as a contribution to the knowledge of the physiological action of drugs. The results of the experiments are based upon numerous observations and graphic records; the drugs have been dissolved in normal tap-water saline solution, and, for the determination of the poisonous effects, have been administered by hypodermic injection under the skin of the back. The tracings are portions of continuous records, and have been checked by control experiments. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Introduction to Pharmacology Third Edition

Download or read book Introduction to Pharmacology Third Edition written by Mannfred A. Hollinger and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2002-11-28 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of Introduction to Pharmacology has over recent years become a highly influential text among students wishing to acquire a knowledge of pharmacology without having to refer to the larger, more detailed, traditional pharmacology volumes. This revised and updated second edition contains significant new material to bring the reader up-to-date with the latest practices and principles in pharmacology. Exploring the basic principles in both the therapeutic and toxicological aspects of drug use, the book employs contemporary examples of medication, supplemented with an increased number of accurate and easy-to-interpret figures and diagrams. Additionally, Introduction to Pharmacology presents the important concept of understanding the limitations surrounding the drugs that cure, replace physiological inadequacies, or treat symptoms, and which have led to the system of drug classification. The broad scope of the book also encompasses the role of the FDA, drugs in sport, and the use of animals for drug experimentation. A clear and accessible book, Introduction to Pharmacology builds on the strengths of the first edition and is an invaluable reference for all students interested in this subject.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental Pharmacology: A Laboratory Guide for the Study of the Physiological Action of Drugs The instruction In Pharmacology in the University Of Missouri from the date of its establishment in the fall of 1900 has been based on a rigid course of required laboratory experiments. The student in Pharmacology no less than in Physiology should be given every Opportunity to Observe for himself the changes produced by a drug in the activities of a tissue, of an organ, and in the entire organism. It is Only on such intimate personal experience with the facts that one can base a rational discussion Of the principles of Pharmacology. The directions presented here have been formulated during the growth of the course as presented in this University and are now printed for the first time. Valuable aid and suggestion have been rendered by my coworkers, Dr. Waldemar Koch, and Mr. Om'ar Ray Gullion, now of Cornell University. This readable introduction to pharmacology is simple enough to be understood without having to take a class to follow the material, but can also be used to complement a course in pharmacology. The approach to pharmacology is at a basic scientific level to build a framework of how drugs work supplemented with information on some representative drugs that are used clinically. Each chapter includes review questions and many chapters include tables of important drugs with brand and generic names.
