Book Th Thorium

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Brown
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-06-29
  • ISBN : 3662063425
  • Pages : 170 pages

Download or read book Th Thorium written by David Brown and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume, Thorium C5, deals with the compounds of thorium and sulfur, selenium, tellurium, and boron, as well as with oxoacid compounds of the three chalcogen elements. Thorium borates have already been treated in Thorium C2. In contrast to the corresponding compounds of uranium the thorium sulfides, etc. , do not show any nuclear or other technological application; they are only of academic interest, despite some very interest ing electronic properties, especially of the 1 : 1 compounds. The thorium-sulfur and the thorium boron systems in particular were studied in detail, so that we have a clear picture of them, whereas there are still a lot of open questions in the systems Th-Se and Th-Te - not very different from other metal chalcogenide systems. Thorium sulfates are of some technological importance because they are formed in solution during recovery of thorium from monazite by sulfuric acid leaching. The very detailed and critical treatment of the chemical and physical properties of the compounds discussed also enables us to find gaps still remaining in our knowledge and thus to initiate new research in this field. I want to thank the two authors, Dr. Horst Wedemeyer (Karlsruhe) and Dr. David Brown (Harwell), for their excellent contributions, the "Literaturabteilung" of the Karlsruhe Nuclear Research Center for its help in providing reports and other documents difficult to procure, as well as the staff of the Gmelin-Institute, especially to Dr. K. -C.

Book The Metallurgy of Nuclear Fuel

Download or read book The Metallurgy of Nuclear Fuel written by V. S. Yemel'Yanov and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Metallurgy of Nuclear Fuel: Properties and Principles of the Technology of Uranium, Thorium and Plutonium is a systematic analysis of the metallurgy of nuclear fuel, with emphasis on the physical, mechanical, and chemical properties as well as the technology of uranium, thorium, and plutonium, together with their alloys and compounds. The minerals and raw material sources of nuclear fuel are discussed, along with the principles of the technology of the raw material processing and the production of the principal compounds, and of the pure metals and alloys. Comprised of three parts, this volume begins with an introduction to the history of the discovery of uranium and its position in the periodic system; its use as a nuclear fuel; radioactivity and isotopic composition; alloys and compounds; and physical, mechanical, and chemical properties. The effect of mechanical and thermal treatment, thermal cycling and irradiation on the physicochemical properties of uranium is also examined. The next two sections are devoted to thorium and plutonium and includes chapters dealing with their uses, alloys and compounds, and methods of recovery and purification. This book is written for university students, but should also prove useful to young production engineers and scientific workers who are concerned with problems in the metallurgy of nuclear fuel.

Download or read book Thorium written by Renae Jamison and published by Nova Science Pub Incorporated. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thorium (Th) is the first element in the Actinide series having atomic number 90. It is a radioactive element. Thorium oxides can be used as nuclear fuels, although this application is quite limited compared with uranium oxide materials. In contrast to the well-known properties of bulk thorium oxides, thorium oxide molecules are much less understood. This book discusses the chemical properties, uses and environmental effects of thorium. Topics discussed include the products of laser ablated thorium atom reactions with small molecules; soil profile thorium and uranium concentration distributions in southeastern Missouri soils; influences of coal-fired power plants on the thorium levels in soils and on radioactive hazards for the population; behavior of Th-isotopes along the pigment TiO2 industrial production process; some features of the Th presence in the poços de Caldas alkaline massif, Brazil; geological and geophysical implications for western Australia; hermophysical and thermodynamic properties of oxygen-containing compounds of thorium; and unique role of thorium in closed (Th-U-Pu)-fuel cycle due to the involvement of hybrid fusion-fission reactors to generate advanced (231Pa+232U+233U)-fuel.

Book Th Thorium Supplement Volume C 8

Download or read book Th Thorium Supplement Volume C 8 written by Michael Bickel and published by Springer. This book was released on 1993 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume comprises the compounds of thorium with the 4th main group elements silicon and germanium and all 5th main group elements except nitrogen. On the subject of ternary and polynary compounds containing oxygen, only those compounds with phosphorus are included (e.g., phosphates, hypophosphates, or phosphinates). Similar compounds of the other ele ments like silicates, arsenates, etc. were already treated in "Thorium" Suppl. Vol. C 2, 1976. Most of the compounds in the different systems treated in this volume are of scientific interest because of their special physical and chemical properties. On the other hand, there are also many compounds wh ich are of specific technological interest, mainly in the nuclear field. Refractory compounds like ThSi or ThP have potential interest as nuclear fuel for special reactors due to their physical properties like good heat conductivity and their chemical stability, e.g., against the corrosion of cladding alloys for nuclear fuel elements. Due to the present situation in the further development of the thorium nuclear fuel cycle, their large potential has not yet been fully investigated. For most of the binary and ternary phases in these systems, we presently have good knowledge about the preparation of the compounds and their physical and chemical properties. But nevertheless, there are still a lot of open questions concerning phase equilibria, solid solutions, and homogeneity of some of the phases described in this volume.
