Book CineMusic Constructing the Film Score

Download or read book CineMusic Constructing the Film Score written by David Cooper and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-12-15 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What has been described as second generation film musicology is both building on, and challenging the orthodoxies of, the pioneering work of scholars who published in the final two decades of the twentieth century. CineMusic? Constructing the Film Score is representative of this new scholarship, approaching the construction of the film score from a number of perspectives, from the primarily practical to the more abstract and theoretical. The films that form the basis of these reflections are similarly diverse, from art-house to mainstream, classical to postmodern. This volume includes essays by established and upcoming scholars and practitioners as well as interviews with two of the UK’s most influential film composers—Trevor Jones (Mississippi Burning, Brassed Off!, Notting Hill, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) and Michael Nyman (The Draughtsman’s Contract, The Piano, Gattaca, The Libertine). An afterward by Anahid Kassabian proposes a number of areas that are ripe for further exploration.

Book Elizabethan Theatre History An Annotated Bibliography of Scholarship 1664 1979

Download or read book Elizabethan Theatre History An Annotated Bibliography of Scholarship 1664 1979 written by David Stevens and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011-11 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formerly published as "English Renaissance Theatre History: A Reference Guide" by G. K. Hall in 1982, this annotated bibliography of scholarship in the field of Elizabethan theatre history has been out of print for almost 30 years. Most academic libraries have a copy in their reference departments, and this classic is now available for the personal libraries of students and scholars in the field. It has never been easier to review the academic literature in such areas as reconstructions of Shakespeare's Globe Playhouse, and other public and private playhouses of Shakespeare's London; the court masques; Inigo Jones; Richard Burbage and other actors of the time; the Lord Mayor's Shows; Puritan opposition to the stage; and other such topics. The terminal date of 1979 reflects the date of original production, but with this tool it is a simple matter for the scholar to update his or her review of the literature. The comprehensive Index is invaluable, and Stevens also provides a preface and introduction.

  • Pages : 676 pages

Download or read book Elizabethan Drama written by John Gassner and published by Hal Leonard Corporation. This book was released on 1990 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Applause Books). Boisterous and unrestrained like the age itself, the Elizabethan theatre has long defended its place at the apex of English dramatic history. Shakespeare was but the brightest star in this extraordinary galaxy of playwrights. The stage boasted a rich and varied repertoire from courtly and romantic comedy to domestic and high tragedy, melodrama, farce, and histories. The Gassner-Green anthology revives the whole range of this universal stage, offering us the unbounded theatrical inventiveness of the age. Elizabethan Drama is designed to provide the modern reader with complete access to the plays, as well as the beguiling Elizabethan world which was their backdrop. John Gassner's classic introduction is supplemented by his and William Green's superb prefaces to the individual plays. Marginal glosses and footnotes throughout keep the immediacy of the Elizabethan stage within easy reach.

Book A Life Composed

Download or read book A Life Composed written by André Schüller and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2002 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The modern literary critic", T. S. Eliot wrote in 1929, "must be an 'experimenter' outside of what you might at first consider his own province; [...] there is no literary problem which does not lead us irresistibly to larger problems." This book follows Eliot's principle and situates his literary and critical work in a wide context that reveals manifold links between aesthetics, ethics, politics and epistemology: the historical context of early-twentieth-century idealism, vitalism and pragmatism, especially the intensely political Bergsonian controversy, and the modern context of the philosophies of Charles Taylor, Michel Foucault and Richard Rorty. 'Knowledge', it argues, was verbalised in the modernist age, individualised into the act of 'knowing', an act with motives and goals, and thus introduced into the realm of ethics - a process central to twentieth-century thought. Eliot's poems especially, constructed as "a life composed", a literary lifetime linking composition and composure, ponder the virtue of precision, the sins of pride and "mental sloth", the temptation of prejudice and the need for conviction. Decidedly tentative, Eliot's poems solve the problem of morally significant literature. In a century of suspicion, they ask the crucial question of where one should start to rely.
