Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Physical Chemistry of the Metals There is perhaps no field Where physical chemistry is of more value than in the field of metallurgy and metallography. In the latter field - its usefulness has been recognized almost from the first but in the field, of metallurgy its application has not been so general. It is hoped that this translation may aid in making the value of chemical dynamics and equilibrium clear to the metallurgist and metallurgical student. Download or read book Metal Clusters at Surfaces written by Karl-Heinz Meiwes-Broer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-04-05 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerous experiments and calculations have shown that isolated metal clusters possess many interesting features, quite different from those known from surface and solid- state physics or from atomic and molecular physics. The technological exploitation of these new properties, e.g. in miniature electronic or mechanical components, requires the cluster to be brought into an environment such as an encapsulating matrix or a surface. Due to the interaction with the contact medium, the properties of the clusters may change or even disappear. Thus the physics of cluster-on-surface systems -- the main subject of this book -- is of fundamental importance. The book addresses a wide audience, from the newcomer to the expert. Starting from fundamental concepts of adsorbate-surface interactions, the modification of electronic properties through electron confinement, and concepts of cluster production, it elucidates the distinct properties of the new metallic nanostructures.

Book Advanced Physical Chemistry for Process Metallurgy

Download or read book Advanced Physical Chemistry for Process Metallurgy written by Nobuo Sano and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last three decades, there have been dramatic changes in the steel industry in terms of the quality of products, processing technology, energy efficiency, labor productivity and environmental protection. The once prominent role of the metals industry in national economies is declining in industrialized countries to the point where fewer research engineers are employed in the industry. The scope of this book is limited to selected topics within the field of Physical Chemistry of Iron and Steelmaking"that are relevant to reduction, refining and solidification steps in the steel industry. The authors, leaders in the field, have gathered the complex information regarding metallurgy in this collection to enable the next generation to take this branch of science, and the metals industry, to new heights. Graduate students and research engineers will find this book particularly useful, while practicing engineers, innovators and managers in technology developmentwill read and consult this book for inspiration and reference.

Book Material Behavior and Physical Chemistry in Liquid Metal Systems

Download or read book Material Behavior and Physical Chemistry in Liquid Metal Systems written by H. U. Borgstedt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The international seminar "Material Behavior and Physical Chemistry in Liquid Metal Systems" was organized by the Institute of Materials and Solid State Research of the Karlsruhe Nuclear Research Center (Karlsruhe, Federal Republic of Germany). The seminar was held at the Nuclear Engineering School of the center on March 24-26, 1981. The aim of the seminar was to give metallurgists, chemists,. and physicists working in different areas of the science and technology of liquid metals an opportunity to discuss the basic work and the need for further work in this field. Since the seminar was held near one of the laboratories which for the last few years has been engaged in liquid alkali metal studies, partic ipants also had an opportunity to observe modern equipment for liquid alkali metal research. Interest in the application of liquid metals as working fluids in energy production, conversion, and storage is increasing. The technology has already demonstrated its high standards, which make possible the operation of large sodium-cooled fast reactors. Past conferences have shown, however, that there is still a lack of basic knowledge and understanding. Therefore, the aim of the present seminar was to discuss basic work in detail, and most of the papers contributed to this objective.
