Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Phylogenetic Method in Taxonomy: The North American Species of Artemisia, Chrysothamnus, and Atriplex Scope. - The essence of taxonomy is clearly indicated by the meaning of the word itself. It denotes the science of arrangement or system, and hence classification. While cataloguing is a part of it, it is a small part only. The naming of new forms is a necessary function of taxonomy, but it Should always be incidental to giving them their proper meaning and relationship, and never an end in itself. In the case of plants, the mere recognition of supposed new species in the herbarium hardly merits the term descriptive botany, and it can in no Wise be regarded as adequate taxonomic investigation. It has its value, and hence its excuse, in the biological exploration of new and distant countries, but, here as elsewhere, permanent taxonomic results must await the application of statis tical and experimental methods in the field (clements. Book Artemisia annua Pharmacology and Biotechnology

Download or read book Artemisia annua Pharmacology and Biotechnology written by Tariq Aftab and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Artemisinin, a sesquiterpene lactone originally extracted from the medicinal plant Artemisia annua L., is an effective antimalarial agent, particularly for multi-drug resistant and cerebral malaria. However, the concentration of artemisinin in the plant is very low. Because the chemical synthesis of artemisinin is complicated and not economically feasible in view of the poor yield of the drug, the intact plant remains the only viable source of artemisinin production. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the concentration of artemisinin in A. annua to reduce the cost of artemisinin based antimalarial drugs. Plant scientists have focused their efforts on A. annua for a higher artemisinin crop yield. With the present volume, we are bringing together the research which is being done on this plant throughout the world and future possibilities for scientists and researchers who want to work on it.

Book Current Trends in Plant Disease Diagnostics and Management Practices

Download or read book Current Trends in Plant Disease Diagnostics and Management Practices written by Pradeep Kumar and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-28 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant diseases play an important role on our daily lives. Most of plant diseases are visible and are caused by biotic and/or abiotic factors. Symptoms are usually the results of a morphological change, alteration or damage to plant tissue and/or cells due to an interference of the plant’s metabolism. All basic structures of vascular plants are subject to attack by pathogens. The failure in accurate disease diagnosis and management may lead to huge losses in plant production and related commodities, which causes nutritional food scarcity. Typically, the appearance of a biotic symptom will indicate the relatively late stage of an infection and/or colonization of a pathogen. Expert detection, accurate diagnosis, and timely management play a significant role in keeping plants free from pathogens. In this book expert scholars share their research knowledge and key literature which are vital toward the diagnosis of plant diseases across the globe, addressing traditional plant pathology techniques, as well as advanced molecular diagnostic approach.

Book Flavonoids of the Sunflower Family Asteraceae

Download or read book Flavonoids of the Sunflower Family Asteraceae written by Bruce A. Bohm and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 836 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flavonoids are secondary plant products that have previously been shown to be helpful in determining relationships among plant groups. This work presents comprehensively the occurrence, patterns of variation, and systematic and evolutionary importance of flavonoids in the sunflower family (Asteraceae), the largest family of flowering plants (23,000 species). It gathers together the more than 2500 reports of flavonoids in Asteraceae published between 1950 to the present and interprets these data in context of new taxonomic (especially generic) alignments. The authors discuss flavonoid patterns with reference to modern phylogenetic studies based on morphology and DNA data. This book provides, therefore, the most exhaustive synthesis and evaluation of the systematic and evolutionary import of flavonoids ever accomplished for any large family of angiosperms.
