Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A welcome re-issue of an English translation of Alexander Luria's famous case-history of hypermnestic man. The study remains the classic paradigm of what Luria called 'romantic science,' a genre characterized by individual portraiture based on an assessment of operative psychological processes. The opening section analyses in some detail the subject's extraordinary capacity for recall and demonstrates the association between the persistence of iconic memory and a highly developed synaesthesia. The remainder of the book deals with the subject's construction of the world, his mental strengths and weaknesses, his control of behaviour and his personality. The result is a contribution to literature as well as to science. (Psychological Medicine ).

Book excerpt: A blend of memoir, history, and travelogue exploring the ancient Egyptian city on the eve of the Arab Spring: “Fresh and original . . . quietly virtuosic.” —The Wall Street Journal Blending aspects of memoir, history, and travel narrative into an elegant and unique tapestry, Peter Stothard uses the sights and sounds of the ancient city to reconnect with the experiences that shaped him and sparked a passionate interest in the life of Cleopatra. Melancholy, yet often humorous, Alexandria probingly deconstructs the enigma of modern Egypt—with its uneasy mix of classical touchstones and increasingly volatile Middle Eastern politics—and offers a firsthand glimpse into the fracturing state just before the Tahrir Square uprising and the start of the Arab Spring. Includes photographs “A thoroughly enjoyable combination of history, autobiography, travel and general musings about Alexandria . . . Don’t try to categorize this book; just read it and let it flow over you.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review) “A chance trip to Alexandria and a lifelong love affair with Cleopatra coalesce . . . Staying in Alexandria’s Metropole Hotel and guided through the city by the at turns effusive and secretive Socratis and Mahmoud, Stothard relates not only his encounters with the remnants of Cleopatra throughout Alexandria but also the origins of his fascination with the Egyptian queen.” —Publishers Weekly

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An original, fascinating, and beautifully written reckoning . . . of that great human passion: to write.”—Kay Redfield Jamison, national bestselling author of An Unquiet Mind Why is it that some writers struggle for months to come up with the perfect sentence or phrase while others, hunched over a keyboard deep into the night, seem unable to stop writing? In The Midnight Disease, neurologist Alice W. Flaherty explores the mysteries of literary creativity: the drive to write, what sparks it, and what extinguishes it. She draws on intriguing examples from medical case studies and from the lives of writers, from Franz Kafka to Anne Lamott, from Sylvia Plath to Stephen King. Flaherty, who herself has grappled with episodes of compulsive writing and block, also offers a compelling personal account of her own experiences with these conditions. “[Flaherty] is the real thing . . . and her writing magically transforms her own tragedies into something strange and whimsical almost, almost funny.”—The Washington Post “This is interesting, heated stuff.”—San Francisco Chronicle “Brilliant . . . [a] precious jewel of a book . . . that sparkles with some fresh insight or intriguing fact on practically every page.”—Seattle Post-Intelligencer “Flaherty mixes memoir, meditation, compendium and scholarly reportage in an odd but absorbing look at the neurological basis of writing and its pathologies . . . Writers will delight in the way information and lore are interspersed.”—Publishers Weekly

Book excerpt: New York-based artist Peggy Preheim is known for her minutely detailed, miniscule graphite drawings on otherwise blank sheets of paper, creating a mood and atmosphere specific to her work. Her drawings are influenced by the small sixteenth century panel paintings of the Low Countries, while their lush black-and-white tonalities evoke early found photographs on which they are often based. Published on the occasion of Preheim's first retrospective, which originates at The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Connecticut, this monograph is the artist's first and features rich reproductions of works from throughout her 20-year career, including sculpture and photography. Noted designer Daphne Geismar's elegant design perfectly captures the uncanny qualities of Preheim's style. The volume includes essays by curator Carter Foster and critic Gregory Volk, as well as a collection of poems and imaginary letters written in response to selected works by Aldrich Director Harry Philbrick. Published in collaboration with The Aldrich.

Renowned Washington, DC, historian James Goode has assembled an incredible collection of images that look back at a Washington before it developed into the international metropolitan city it is today. The impactful historic photography exposes the elements of the DC metro area that have disappeared- the dairy farms of Loudoun County, the railroad round house in Alexandria, and model boats on the Rainbow Pool on the National Mall, as well as provide startling different views of areas and neighborhoods that still exist. The majority of these images have never been published, and under the curatorial eye of James Goode have been put together in a way that give readers a better understanding of the city Washington DC was, and the city it was to become."

Book Alexandria Bay

  • Pages : 132 pages

Download or read book Alexandria Bay written by Thomas F. Folino and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexandria Bay reveals a place that is blessed with extraordinary natural beauty, great fishing, fine resorts, and myriad entertainments. Located in the heart of the Thousand Islands, Alexandria Bay-a preeminent tourist destination for visitors from all nations-owes a great part of its history to its strategic position on the St. Lawrence River, the natural border between Canada and the United States. Surveyed as a potential shipping port in 1804, the area was not settled until after the War of 1812. French nobleman James D. LeRay built the first tavern and warehouse in 1818 to serve nascent shipping and logging industries and named the new settlement after his son, Alexander. By 1848, the first hotel had opened, signaling the birth of a tourist industry. Real prominence, however, began with a visit by President Ulysses S. Grant and family in 1872; the construction of palatial summer "cottages" and the opening of deluxe hotels followed shortly thereafter. Thus evolved the burgeoning business of tourism, which to this day constitutes the primary occupation of the village.

Book Rescues from the Sky

Download or read book Rescues from the Sky written by Lee F. Walters MD and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2020 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rescues from the Sky features the true stories of the US Coast Guard Aviation Medical Rescue Service as seen through the eyes of a wet-behind-the-ears flight surgeon fresh out of training. The events it recounts took place during the author’s experience while stationed at US Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco from 1971 to 1973. The rescues are described in detail and include, among others: - The crash of a 747 on the runway on the author’s first day of work - The hijacking of a 737 by two Bulgarians - The rescue of a woman bleeding from an abortion performed on a Russian submarine - Saving the life of a sailboat owner in Half Moon Bay who had a heart attack and fell unconscious while sailing in thirty-mile-per-hour winds toward a rocky shore - Rescuing a Czech crewman who developed appendicitis fifty miles at sea in a storm with fifty-five mile-per-hour winds Intersecting the dramatic rescues is a love story between the author and a young nurse and how their medical careers get in the way of their growing need to be together. The book also traces the author’s training that led to his becoming a flight surgeon prior to his tour of duty. Though written under a pseudonym for personal reasons, this is a work of non-fiction that has been approved by the Motion Picture and Television Office of the United States Coast Guard. Several of the incidents recounted are also well documented in newspapers from the era. This book is ideal for anyone who likes adventure, excitement, humor, emergency medicine, aviation adventure, a tender love story, or all of the above.

Book A Record of Meetings

Download or read book A Record of Meetings written by Peter Demianovich Ouspensky and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on with total page 1130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Mr. O. came in, after answering a few questions, he said that if we had any questions on what he had said last time, we must ask them then, as he would not come back to the subject again; we would have other things to talk about later. During the meeting he would go over what he had said. After a certain number more questions, he said that when speaking of ‘I’, it was necessary to realize that, in Special Doctrine, ‘I’ could be spoken of in five ways, on five different levels. Man, in his ordinary state, is a multiplicity of ‘I’s. This is the first meaning. On the diagram this is indicated by the square of ‘I’s. When he decides to start work, an observing ‘I’ appears. This is shown shaded in on the diagram. This is the second meaning. The next meaning, indicated by the smallest circle, is where deputy-steward appears who has control over a number of ‘I’s. The fourth meaning, indicated by the middle circle, is where steward appears; he has control over all ‘I’s. The fifth meaning is that of master. He is drawn as a big circle outside, as he has time-body; he knows the past and also the future, although there must be degrees of this. It was interesting to connect this diagram with that of the ‘carriage’, ‘ horse’, ‘driver’ and ‘master’. In the carriage or physical body are certain of the larger ‘I’s. The horse and driver, that is in feeling and thought, are the many small ‘I’s. In the square representing master is, first the observing ‘I’, then the deputy-steward, then the steward, and finally the master is shown as a circle encircling the whole diagram. (These diagrams are to be regarded as, so to speak, supplementary diagrams.) When speaking of the division ‘I’ and ‘Jones’, he called the division ‘ Jones’ false personality. This phrase was for convenience when talking, and avoided having to say either ‘Ouspensky’, ‘Smith’, ‘Jones’, etc. It must not be confused with the division ‘essence’ and ‘personality’. The divisions which he spoke about last time must be kept separate. For instance the idea of ‘rolls’ must not be connected with that of ‘I’. Rolls were connected with the idea of centres, which were regarded as consisting of rolls. ‘I’s, on the other hand, were connected with the idea of consciousness, of the four states of consciousness—sleep state , waking state, state of self-remembering, and objective state. It was the continuous change of ‘I’s which made up our ordinary waking state.

Book The Arab Imago

  • ISBN : 0691151326

Download or read book The Arab Imago written by Stephen Sheehi and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-04-12 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The birth of photography coincided with the expansion of European imperialism in the Middle East, and some of the medium's earliest images are Orientalist pictures taken by Europeans in such places as Cairo and Jerusalem—photographs that have long shaped and distorted the Western visual imagination of the region. But the Middle East had many of its own photographers, collectors, and patrons. In this book, Stephen Sheehi presents a groundbreaking new account of early photography in the Arab world. The Arab Imago concentrates primarily on studio portraits by Arab and Armenian photographers in the late Ottoman Empire. Examining previously known studios such as Abdullah Frères, Pascal Sébah, Garabed Krikorian, and Khalil Raad, the book also provides the first account of other pioneers such as Georges and Louis Saboungi, the Kova Brothers, Muhammad Sadiq Bey, and Ibrahim Rif'at Pasha—as well as the first detailed look at early photographs of the annual pilgrimage to Mecca. In addition, the book explores indigenous photography manuals and albums, newspapers, scientific journals, and fiction. Featuring extensive previously unpublished images, The Arab Imago shows how native photography played an essential role in the creation of modern Arab societies in Egypt, Palestine, Syria, and Lebanon before the First World War. At the same time, the book overturns Eurocentric and Orientalist understandings of indigenous photography and challenges previous histories of the medium.
