Book excerpt: In 1911 the French publisher Lucien Vogel challenged Edward Steichen to create the first artistic, rather than merely documentary, fashion photographs, a moment that is now considered to be a turning point in the history of fashion photography. As fashion changed over the next century, so did the photography of fashion. Steichen’s modernist approach was forthright and visually arresting. In the 1930s the photographer Martin Munkácsi pioneered a gritty, photojournalistic style. In the 1960s Richard Avedon encouraged his models to express their personalities by smiling and laughing, which had often been discouraged previously. Helmut Newton brought an explosion of sexuality into fashion images and turned the tables on traditional gender stereotypes in the 1970s, and in the 1980s Bruce Weber and Herb Ritts made male sexuality an important part of fashion photography. Today, following the integration of digital technology, teams like Inez & Vinoodh and Mert & Marcus are reshaping our notion of what is acceptable—not just aesthetically but also technically and conceptually—in a fashion photograph. This lavishly illustrated survey of one hundred years of fashion photography updates and reevaluates this history in five chronological chapters by experts in photography and fashion history. It includes more than three hundred photographs by the genre’s most famous practitioners as well as important but lesser-known figures, alongside a selection of costumes, fashion illustrations, magazine covers, and advertisements.

Book Lisa Fonssagrives

Download or read book Lisa Fonssagrives written by Martin Harrison and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Swedish by birth, Parisian by inclination, and American following her marriage to Irving Penn in 1950. Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn (1911-1992) was the most sought-after model in the history of international fashion photography for three decades and the most famous face in such magazines as Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. During her long career, she posed for all the prominent photographers of her day: George Hoyningen-Huene, Man Ray, Horst, Erwin Blumenfeld, George Platt Lynes, Louise Dahl-Wolfe, Norman Parkinson and Richard Avedon, among others. Of special importance was her work with Fernand Fonssagrives, her first husband; with Horst, with whom she shared a common fate as a European immigrant; and of course with Irving Penn, her second husband. Lisa Fonssagrives was obviously more than just a model for photographers - she was both their muse and inspiration. Many of them made their most beautiful and noteworthy fashion photographs in cooperation with her. Among these is a surprisingly large number which rank among the absolute classics in the history of fashion photography of our century. This volume was compiled and arranged by David Seidner, a talented fashion photographer of the new generation who unearthed an undiscovered collection of photographs which once belonged to Lisa Fonssagrives. The British photo historian Martin Harrison wrote the accompanying biographical essay.

Book Edward Steichen in High Fashion

Download or read book Edward Steichen in High Fashion written by William A Ewing and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2008-10-14 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Steichen was already a famous painter and photographer on both sides of the Atlantic when, in early 1923, he was offered one of the most prestigious positions, and certainly the most lucrative, in photography's commercial domain, that of chief photographer for Conde Nast's influential and highly regarded magazines Vogue and Vanity Fair. Over the next fifteen years. Steichen produced a body of work of unequaled brilliance, putting his exceptional talents and prodigious energies to work dramatizing and glamorizing contemporary culture and its achievers, in politics, literature, sports, dance, theater, opera, and, above all, the world of high fashion." "The Steichen archive at Conde Nast contains more than 2000 original prints. Several of the images are well known, prominently featured in various histories of photographs. Until now, however, no more than a handful of these prints has been exhibited or published. The 1920s and 1930s represent the high point in Steichen's photographic career, and the work he did for Vogue and Vanity Fair encompasses some of the most striking creations of twentieth-century photography."--BOOK JACKET.

Download or read book Paris Changing written by Christopher Rauschenberg and published by Princeton Architectural Press. This book was released on 2007-10-04 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1888 and 1927 Eugne Atget meticulously photographed Paris and its environs, capturing in thousands of photographs the city's parks, streets, and buildings as well as its diverse inhabitants. His images preserved the vanishing architecture of the ancien rgime as Paris grew into a modern capital and established Atget as one of the twentieth century's greatest and most revered photographers. Christopher Rauschenberg spent a year in the late '90s revisiting and rephotographing many of Atget's same locations. Paris Changing features seventy-four pairs of images beautifully reproduced in duotone. By meticulously replicating the emotional as well as aesthetic qualities of Atget's images, Rauschenberg vividly captures both the changes the city has undergone and its enduring beauty. His work is both an homage to his predecessor and an artistic study of Paris in its own right. Each site is indicated on a map of the city, inviting readers to follow in the steps of Atget and Rauschenberg themselves. Essays by Clark Worswick and Alison Nordstrom give insight into Atget's life and situate Rauschenberg's work in the context of other rephotography projects. The book concludes with an epilogue by Rosamond Bernier as well as a portfolioof other images of contemporary Paris by Rauschenberg. If a trip to the city of lights is not in your immediate future, this luscious portrait of Paris then and now is definitely the next best thing.

Book excerpt: An esteemed curator’s introduction to the history and themes of photographic portraiture that masterfully combines some of the most famous portraits ever made with rarely seen treasures and curiosities. Photographic portraiture has always served a number of functions: from practical identification to storytelling and the intimate personal portrait. With a fresh approach, Face Time explores the many modes of portraiture—from fine art photography to fashion, and from anthropology to cinema—as well as the ways we encounter and interpret a portrait, from the news-hour mugshot to the glossy fashion photograph. Organized into eight thematic chapters, curator and photography historian Phillip Prodger captures more than 150 years of photographic portraiture, including nineteenth-century pioneers Hippolyte Bayard and William Henry Fox Talbot, modernist icons Lee Miller and Aleksander Rodchenko, as well as contemporary groundbreakers Newsha Tavakolian, Rineke Dijkstra, and Zanele Muholi. Prodger takes readers through the key questions of photography and dives into complex explorations of identity, representation, and purpose. Intelligently selected, this introduction to the history of the photographic portrait is comprehensive and groundbreaking in scope. Featuring portraits of great figures such as Queen Elizabeth II, Barack Obama, Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, and Yuri Gagarin, Prodger aligns some of the best-known portraits ever made alongside rarely seen gems to tell the story of one of photography’s most popular engagements: us.

Book excerpt: A fascinating survey of the varied career of an inventive and influential 19th-century photographer, from allegorical montage to Darwin's catalogue of emotions Oscar G. Rejlander (1813-1875) was a Swedish-born photographer who pioneered the genre of art photography. He is best known for combining negatives to form elaborate allegorical compositions and for his ability to communicate expression through his photographic studies and portraits. His influence shines in the works of other important photographers of the day. This catalogue accompanies the first major retrospective on this vital yet understudied figure and considers the whole range of his activities, including his work as a painter and printmaker. Lori Pauli introduces Rejlander with a comprehensive survey of his life and career. Three essays follow, from leading scholars in the field of 19th-century photography, with topics ranging from Rejlander's engagement with Victorian painting, to his studio and working methods, to his artistic circle and work with Charles Darwin. Engagingly written and beautifully illustrated, this publication fills a void in scholarship on Rejlander; it also sheds light more broadly on the intersection of art and science and the uses of photography in Victorian culture, as well as the history of photography and its impact on Victorian culture.
