Book The Photographer and the Missing Confederate Gold

Download or read book The Photographer and the Missing Confederate Gold written by Anthony Davis and published by . This book was released on 2019-09-19 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a work of fiction based on events of the American Civil War. The Civil War broke out in April 1861 when secessionist forces from the Confederate States of the South attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina. The loyalists of the Union in the North faced secessionists of the Confederate States in the South, who advocated for states' rights in order to uphold slavery. Photography was still in its infancy. Our story follows the life of photographer Jim Hooker as he travels through the battlefields and headquarters of the Confederate States of America. Toward the end of the War, Confederate President, Jefferson Davis, under siege in Charleston, is forced to leave as the Union Army continues its bombardment of the city. Expecting the possibility of an encounter with Union soldiers as he escapes, Davis entrusts four naval cadets with all the gold that remains in his treasury. He instructs them to bring the gold to him in Danville where he is heading. He believes they have a better chance to get past the Union army than he does. The narrative follows these young lads who meet up with the photographer Jim Hooker along their way. As events unfold, the gold has to be hidden. The story switches to the present day and the discovery of a map by a shadowy character named Smythe. The map is a key to the mystery of the missing Confederate gold. Smythe discovers the map after purchasing a chest full of old photographs at a closed box auction. Having no use for the photos, he sells them to photograph dealer Kathy Tyler. Among the many photographs is an old journal written by Jim Hooker. After reading it, Kathy and her boyfriend Nick decide to go on a hunt to see if they can find the gold.

Book Robert E Lee in War and Peace

Download or read book Robert E Lee in War and Peace written by Donald A. Hopkins and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2013-10-19 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert E. Lee is well known as a Confederate general and as an educator later in life, but most people are exposed to the same handful of images of one of America’s most famous sons. It has been almost seven decades since anyone has attempted a serious study of Lee in photographs, and with Don Hopkins’s painstakingly researched and lavishly illustrated Robert E. Lee in War and Peace, the wait is finally over. Dr. Hopkins, a Mississippi surgeon and lifelong student of the Civil War and Southern history with a recent interest in Robert E. Lee’s “from life” photographs, scoured manuscript repositories and private collections across the country to locate every known Lee image (61 in all) in existence today. The detailed text accompanying these images provides a sweeping history of Lee’s life and a compelling discussion of antique photography, with biographical sketches of all of Lee’s known photographers. The importance of information within the photographer’s imprint or backmark is emphasized throughout the book. Hopkins offers a substantial amount of previously unknown information about these images, how each came to be, and the mistakes in fact and attribution other authors and writers have made describing photographs of Lee to the reading public. Many of the images in this book are being published for the first time. In addition to a few rare photographs and formats that were uncovered during the research phase of Robert E. Lee in War and Peace, the author offers—for the first time—definitive and conclusive attribution of the identity of the photographer of the well-known Lee “in the field” images, and reproduces a startling imperial-size photograph of Lee made by Alexander Gardner of Washington, D.C. Students of American history in general and the Civil War in particular, as well as collectors and dealers who deal with Civil War era photography, will find Hopkins’s outstanding Robert E. Lee in War and Peace a true contribution to the growing literature on the Civil War. About the Author: Born in the rural South, Donald A. Hopkins has maintained a fascination with Southern history since he was a child. In addition to published papers in the medical field, he has written several Civil War articles and The Little Jeff: The Jeff Davis Legion, Cavalry, Army of Northern Virginia for which he received the United Daughters of the Confederacy’s Jefferson Davis Historical Gold Medal. Dr. Hopkins served as Battalion Surgeon for the 1st Battalion, 9th Marines, (better known as “The Walking Dead”) in Vietnam. He was awarded the purple heart and the Bronze Star with combat “V.” Dr. Hopkins is a surgeon in Gulfport, Mississippi, where he lives with his wife Cindy and their golden retriever Dixie.

Book Secrets of the Lost Confederate Gold

Download or read book Secrets of the Lost Confederate Gold written by Albert Atwell and published by . This book was released on 2021-11-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about two men that have searched a lifetime for the "Lost Confederate Gold." Each of us started our quest at an early age. I, myself; I started when I was five years old in 1959. At first, I was interested in just finding coins. After a rainstorm I would go out and search the ground where rainwater had run off the roof of our home thereby cutting a deep ditch into the grass. I was rewarded with a few pennies or even a nickel. My partner, Edward "Bubba" Powers started when he was only eight years old. While searching around an old home he found snuff cans containing silver dollars. We both took separate paths researching and searching for lost treasures. Along about 1996, J. Frank Carroll, a Danville, Virginia native wrote a book entitled, "Confederate Gold in Danville." I bought Mr. Carroll's book on New Year's Eve 1997. Edward Powers, or Bubba as he likes to be called, he and I brushed each other in meetings with J. Frank Carroll and while searching for the Confederate Gold. We were never introduced, and rumors were spread by J. Frank Carroll to keep us from meeting one another. Later, on March 3, 2008, J. Frank Carroll passed away. I searched on the Internet and was able to get Bubba's phone number. I called to let him know about J. Frank Carroll's passing away. We talked for over an hour and on this self-same day, even though 125 miles separated our homes, we became partners searching for the "Lost Confederate Gold." This story, is how we did that, what we learned, what we found, and what is left to be found... Book excerpt: As a boy growing up in rural Arkansas, Bob Brewer often heard from his uncle and his great-uncle about a particular tree in the woods, the "Bible Tree," filled with strange carvings. Years later he would learn that this tree was carved with symbols associated with the Knights of the Golden Circle, a Civil Warera secret society that had buried gold coins and other treasure in various remote locations across the South and Southwest in hopes of someday funding a second War Between the States. These secret caches were guarded by sentinels, men whose responsibility it was to watch and protect these sites. To his astonishment, Bob discovered that both his uncle and his great-uncle had been twentieth-century sentinels, and that he had grown up near an important KGC treasure site. In Shadow of the Sentinel, Bob Brewer and investigative journalist Warren Getler tell the fascinating story of the Knights of the Golden Circle and the hidden caches the KGC established across the country. Brewer reveals how, with agonizing effort, he eventually deciphered the fiendishly complicated KGC codes and ciphers, which drew heavily on images associated with Freemasonry. (Many of the key KGC postCivil War leaders were Scottish Rite Masons, who used the cover of that secret fraternity to conduct their activities.) Using his knowledge of KGC symbolism to crack coded maps, Brewer has located several KGC caches and has recovered gold coins, guns, and other treasure from some of them. Shadow of the Sentinel is the most comprehensive account yet of the activities of the KGC after the Civil War and, indeed, into the 1900s. Getler and Brewer suggest that the clandestine network of KGC operatives was far wider than previously thought, and that it included Jesse James, the former Confederate guerrilla whose stage and bank robberies helped to fill KGC treasure chests. This is a rousing and provocative adventure that weaves together one man's personal quest with an intriguing, little-known chapter in America's hidden history.
