Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Phoenix, 1942: Cumberland University Winstead Paine Bone's life may be likened to the bridge that spanned the first hundred years in the history of Cumberland University. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In June 1942 the Indian Army suffered a major defeat at the hands of the Japanese Army and subsequently endured its longest retreat ever. The Japanese forces had proved more mobile in tactics and more motivated and seasoned in warfare. As a result, the Indian Army assessed its mistakes to determine what changes were needed to rebuild itself into a more capable fighting force. Marston looks at the Indian Army as a reform-minded organization, one that was able to take lessons from this major defeat, implement the necessary reforms, and ultimately defeat the Japanese soundly in 1945. Army leaders instigated analysis of the defeat at all levels of command. Innovations in operational procedure, organization, and tactics were compared, discussed, then implemented. An ongoing reassessment continued both during and after subsequent engagements. By analyzing the changes made in tactical doctrine, reinforcement procedure, Indianization of the officer corps, and the quality of nonmartial race units, Marston demonstrates that the Indian Army of 1945 was vastly different from that of 1939. The Indian Army's transformation into a highly professional force contradicts the commonly held belief that it was too conservative a force to reform itself thoroughly in the face of new challenges.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than half of all Arizonans live in Phoenix, the center of one of the most urbanized states in the nation. This history of the Sunbelt metropolis traces its growth from its founding in 1867 to its present status as one of the ten largest cities in the United States. Drawing on a wide variety of archival materials, oral accounts, promotional literature, and urban historical studies, Bradford Luckingham presents an urban biography of a thriving city that for more than a century has been an oasis of civilization in the desert Southwest. First homesteaded by pioneers bent on seeing a new agricultural empire rise phoenix-like from ancient Hohokam Indian irrigation ditches and farming settlements, Phoenix became an agricultural oasis in the desert during the late 1800s. With the coming of the railroads and the transfer of the territorial capital to Phoenix, local boosters were already proclaiming it the new commercial center of Arizona. As the city also came to be recognized as a health and tourist mecca, thanks to its favorable climate, the concept of "the good life" became the centerpiece of the city's promotional efforts. Luckingham follows these trends through rapid expansion, the Depression, and the postwar boom years, and shows how economic growth and quality of life have come into conflict in recent times.

Book excerpt: This is a tale of a three-hundred-year-old blanket made in the mid-1700s in Sweden and follows its travels and adventures to England and then to the New World. It was with the Sons of Liberty when "the shot heard around the world" was fired. It was in the evacuation of Charleston in 1863 and trekked to Ohio afterward. It then traveled west to Arizona and was with those who settled in the state, from Tombstone to Tucson and then to Prescott and Glendale, near Phoenix. It was with Teddy's Rough Riders at San Juan in Cuba. Pieces of it found their way to WWII and Vietnam. "The story is told from journals and news accounts that were saved by the many owners as it was handed down from family member to family member. It is a fun read and interesting slice of American history, which you may not have studied in the public-school system." By Stan Williams 2020
