Book The Philosophy of the Christian Religion Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Philosophy of the Christian Religion Classic Reprint written by A. M. Fairbairn and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of the Christian Religion This book may be describe as an attempt to do two things: first, to explain religion through nature and; and, secondly, to consure Christianity through religion. The author conceives religion to be a joint product of the mind within man and the nature around him, the mind being the source of the ideas which constitute its soul, the nature around determining the usages and customs which build up its body. He does not think, therefore, that any one of its special forms can be explained without the local nature which begot and shaped it, or that its general being can be resolved and construed without the reason or thought which is common to the race. He sees in religion the greatest of all mans unconscious creations, and the most potent of the means which the past, while it was still a living present, formed for the making of the man and the times that were yet to be. The beliefs of the author are writ large on almost every page, and these he need neither explain nor justify here; but a word or two may be said as to the occasion which defined not so much the problem of the book as its scope and point of view. Some years ago he had the honour of being appointed by the University of Chicago lecturer on the Haskell foundation. The conditions of the endowment were that a certain number of lectures should be delivered in India, especially in the Presidency towns. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Religion, Its Meanings and Proof The popular discussion of what is commonly called the New Theology did not take place till this book was practically completed. It has, therefore, been impossible, even if it had been otherwise desirable, to enter into the current controversy on the subject. It will be found, however, that many of the subjects of the controversy are dealt with, and that a serious attempt is made to give full effect to the truth of the immanence, while steadfastly maintaining the transcendence, of God. Book Foundations of Christian Belief

Download or read book Foundations of Christian Belief written by Francis L. Strickl and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-25 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foundations of Christian Belief: Studies in the Philosophy of Religion It will be seen at once that the scope of religion and the complexity Of the problems it presents make its treatment by a philosophical method far from simple, for in the systematic study of the religious life we are not dealing with forces which are constant and invariable like those, for instance, dealt with in physics. We are dealing, rather, with phases of life as they manifest themselves in those variables named human belief, emotion and will. In other words, we deal with life on the plane Of the personal. This makes a philosophy Of religion particularly difficult. It also makes it all the more important that we develop a proper method, a method which will recog nize constantly that when we deal with religion we are dealing with personal life, and with a great factor in human history which has always stood in the closest relation to the practical concerns of life. Book Essays and Addresses on the Philosophy of Religion Classic Reprint

Download or read book Essays and Addresses on the Philosophy of Religion Classic Reprint written by Friedrich Von Hugel and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays and Addresses on the Philosophy of Religion Christian Church, for well over the first three centuries of her existence, left all the killing to her persecutors and herself per sisted and prevailed not by killing but by dying. Nevertheless, we shall do well, I think, not to deny that even the persecutions tolerated or encouraged by later Church authorities, have con tributed, in certain times and places, to the real consolidation of Christendom. And especially we shall be wise if we do not insist upon any sense, innate in all human hearts, of the essential heinousness of all persecution. And in Paper No. 4 I have attempted to show how the reality of Evil is beyond any direct explanation by anyone - the true state of affairs here is not that believers can explain and that unbelievers cannot explain, still less that Christians cannot explain but that sceptics can. No but that Christianity does, if something other, yet something more than explain Evil. Christianity has Immensely increased the range and depth of our insight as to Evil and, at the same time, Christianity alone has given man the motives and the power not only to trust on, unshaken, in the spiritual sun, in God, in spite of these sun spots of Evil, but to transform Evil into an instrument of Good. Book The Christian Philosophy of Life

Download or read book The Christian Philosophy of Life written by Tilmann Pesch and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Philosophy of Life: Reflections on the Truths of Religion The author of "The Christian Philosophy of Life" has reached the close of his earthly pilgrimage. "Finita sunt omnia. In nomine Patris et Filii et Spiritus Sancti! Amen?" Such were his last words. On October 18, 1899, death came to end his sharp, prolonged sufferings. It found him an exile at Valkenburg, a small town in the Netherlands, and his mortal remains have been laid to rest in foreign soil, but we trust that his soul is at home once more in the land where light and peace reign eternally. Tilmann Pesch was born in Cologne on February 1, 1836, and entered the novitiate of the Society of Jesus at Munster on October 15, 1852. He was consecrated to the priesthood in January 1866, by that splendid champion of the liberty of the Church, Wilhelm Emmanuel von Ketteler, in the chapel of the episcopal palace at Munich, and made his solemn vows at Aix-la-Chapelle on February 2, 1871. For the space of many years he filled the post of lecturer on philosophy, first at Maria-Laach, and subsequently at Blijenbeck, in Holland. The numerous works for which we are indebted to his pen form no mean contribution to Catholic letters, and attest alike his intellectual gifts and industry, whilst through the medium of his spiritual writings, sermons and conferences, he has brought counsel and comfort to many souls. Wide learning, in his case, was accompanied by a childlike humility, and his gentle, benignant spirit knew neither fear nor compromise wherever principles were at stake. Book The Philosophy of Christianity

Download or read book The Philosophy of Christianity written by William D. Pirie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of Christianity: Or the Purpose and Power of the Gospel Although all nations, and even all tribes, profess some sort of religion, yet there prevails an extreme uncertainty as to its purpose, and as to the means or mode under which such purpose is to be realised. This is the more Singular because people do not seem generally to be aware of it themselves. The fact is, that men naturally dislike precise knowledge with respect to religion. They prefer loose and in definite notions, which do not perplex them by con siderations away from those objects in which alone they take a profound interest. This will appear manifest even under a very general investigation of the character of religion as usually professed and practised among human beings, taken in connection with the subject to which our attention is now more specially to be directed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of Christianity 1. "God is a Spirit." 2. "Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is One Lord." 3. "There are three Persons in the Godhead, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; and these are one God." 4. "The three Persons of the Godhead are of one essence, consubstantial each with the others." 5. The three are differentiated in person and in office; and yet they possess their personal distinctions in complete sphericity and exercise their several offices in free and perfect conspiracy. 6. "And God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him, male and female created he them." 7. In the Manhead there are three persons, Adam, Eve and the Son; and these three are one Man. 8. The three are differentiated in person and in office; and yet in their normal estate, they progressively possess their personal distinctions in complete sphericity and discharge their several offices in free and perfect conspiracy. 9. The Son is the immediate offspring, who mediates the reproduction of Adam in the human race. In the larger sense the Son is the human race progenerate. 10. The Son in neither sense is in himself an organism, or solidarity; but as the Son (in latter sense) progressively achieves his sonship, he approaches the actualization of his own individual personality. The human race (progenerate) is therefore, a solidarity more or less completely actualized so long, and only so long, as it sustains its normal relation to its head, Adam. It is then in Adam that the human race (progenerate) has its principle of unity or solidarity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Truth of the Christian Religion Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Truth of the Christian Religion Classic Reprint written by Julius Kaftan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Truth of the Christian Religion The case is similar with regard to the injunctions of morality, to which such great importance is assigned in the Christian religion. As they are represented in the conscience, they claim to be directly valid without any further justification or demonstration. If we ask whether they' are true, that does not mean whether they are subjectively valid in the manner stated, but it means whether they are' really to be referred to God, and because of such origin have the significance of objective laws of the world. The question therefore goes back, as before, to the other query whether the Christian faith which ascribes such significance to them is true. We are concerned with the truth of the Faith when we inquire regarding the truth of the Christian Religion. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of Faith and the Fourth Gospel The passages have. Been purposely chosen as con structive rather than controversial. The atmosphere of passing controversies has been deliberately avoided. The reader may sometimes be puzzled to find himself passing from philosophy to theology. On reflection he will, I think, see that this is only a natural consequence of what was to Dr. Holland at once his philosophy and his theology. To him the world of thought was one; a world without God was not a world; the process by which man passes from the primary human experience to the living faith through Christ in God was continuous; the logic of faith was the logic of history and fact, the logic of human experience - the philosophy, as he said, of the man who has become aware of the meaning and purpose of human life as a valid whole. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socrates and Christ: A Study in the Philosophy of Religion This brief study, covering as it does a Wide and pre eminently important period of human history, is not in any way exhaustive. Of its shortcomings in many directions I am deeply sensible. Throughout, the de sign has been to group afresh ascertained facts, to exhibit their inter-connection, and to emphasise their essential differences, rather than to bring forward evi dence which had been neglected or even unnoted hitherto. An attempt has been made to show that the development of Greek thought and the peculiar charac ter of Judaism necessarily rendered Christ's work dif ferent from that of Socrates. While dogmatic theology undoubtedly contains very many elements derived from Greek philosophy, Christianity at its source is in no wise Greek. Philosophy partly prepared the way for it, and originated not a few doctrines which afterwards became incorporated in Christian dogma. This, how ever, was only a secondary relationship. The guesses of both have collided in the air, and a real battle seemed impending; but it was only guesses which exploded - bubbles, not bombs; and it is never to be for gotten that a professor of religion has just as much right to guess as a professor of science, and the latter no more right nor skill than the former, although he has had more practice.
