Book excerpt: Charles Bucke was an English author who published an impressive variety of works covering a vast range of topics during his lifetime, including several on the subject of philosophy. Bucke's book "The Philosophy of Nature: Or the Influence of Scenery on the Mind and Heart" was originally published in two volumes, but later he added a third and a fourth volume to the series as his knowledge and insight around the subject continued to expand. Volume two highlights the heart as a means to explore nature and scenery, "Of all the passions, which derive additional force from scenery, none experiences a greater accession than Love." Bucke then explores how the ancients have described love and how humans express it in the current age. That nature and scenery can inspire love in the human heart is the central theme of Bucke's book. His work utilizes quotes and poetry inspired by nature to emphasize how the human heart responds to the natural world around them. He argues that nature can inspire the heart as much as, if not more so, than a friend or lover.
