Book The Principles of Morals Being the Body of the Work Vol 2 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-07-28 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Morals (Being the Body of the Work), Vol. 2 It may excite some surprise that I have made so few allusions to the numerous, and, in some cases, valuable, works on Ethics which have appeared in England during the last few years. It is not that I am blind to their merits, or that I have not derived advantage from them in the way of either confirming, modifying, or correcting my own opinions; but the result of my experience is that the constant reference to other authors is a source of considerable difficulty and embarrassment to the reader. Many writers do not seem sufficiently to discriminate between the functions of an author and a reviewer; and this is especially the case in philosophical works, where the large proportion of contested matter offers a con stant temptation to an author to digress into a discussion of other theories, either as coinciding with or conflicting with his own. To so great an extent is this the case that I often find persons who have great difficulty in distinguishing between the expository and the critical parts of a modern book. Book History of Moral Science Vol 2 of 2 Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Moral Science, Vol. 2 of 2 Dr. Hutcheson's treatise on the passions is a book of considerable ingenuity and importance. He seems to have set a high value upon it himself, and his affection for it may have been considerably heightened from the consideration that it was his first production, and what contributed in a material degree to bring him into notice as a moral writer. This work is divided into two parts, one on the nature and conduct of the passions, and the other contains further illustrations of the doctrine of a moral sense, and an examination of the systems of Mr. Wollaston, Dr. Clarke, and others. Book The Theory of Good and Evil Vol 2

Download or read book The Theory of Good and Evil Vol 2 written by Hastings Rashdall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Good and Evil, Vol. 2: A Treatise on Moral Philosophy I shall deal first with the denial that even goods of the same kind are capable of quantitative measurement. I hardly know whether the question has ever been explicitly raised as to the higher goods - Morality, Culture and the like - but the possibility of quantitative measurement has certainly been explicitly denied with regard to pleasure. That is the first question therefore with which we shall have to deal. The doctrine that pleasures cannot be summed, that there is no meaning in the idea of a sum of pleasures and that couse quently the hedonistic calculus is impossible and unintelligible, has long been maintained by a certain section of anti-utilitarian writers, among whom it will be enough to mention the late Prof. T. H. Green and Mr. Bradley. It must be confessed, however, that it is not very easy to extract from either of these writers the exact grounds or even the precise meaning of their con tention. Prof. Mackenzie in his Manual of Ethics and his Introduction to Social Philosophy has performed a real service by putting the doctrine into a form in which it is more easy to subject it to examination and criticism. In the present chapter, however, I shall not confine myself to what Prof. Mackenzie has advanced, as what appear to me the misconceptions which underlie his reasoning are widely diffused, and seem often to be assumed in the language of writers who have been less lucid and less explicit. My object is rather to get to the bottom of the misunderstanding than to criticize any particular writer; I do not therefore wish to be understood to hold Prof. Mackenzie responsible for every argument that I may criticize except where I expressly quote him. This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A System of Moral Philosophy, in Three Books, Vol. 2 of 3 A Contract is "the consent of two or more in the fame design, mutually expressed with a view to constitute or abolish some right or obligation." We have already seen the necessity of frequent translations property by consent of the proprietor, and of a constant, social intercourse of offices among men in giving mutual assistance. The law of nature requires and obliges us all to be ready voluntarily to do all kind offices in our power, and every good man is thus disposed; and yet express contracts about them are necessary among the best of men. For tho' men are obliged to social offices, yet they are not bound, except humanity to the indigent requires it, to give their goods or labours to others for nothing. Such obligation would have all the bad effects of a community of goods. The wealthy need more frequently the labours of the indigent, and the indigent must be supported by the compensations they get for them. There must be mutual agreements about these things. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Deontology, Vol. 2 of 2: Or, the Science of Morality It is not presumed that this Volume contains rules for every probable or possible contingency in which the inquirer may seek for the application of the Deontological code. But the principles being laid down, and so many incidents offered for their explanation and illustration, the reader may be safely left for himself to gather together such circumstances as his observation may furnish, in order to submit them to those tests with which he is here supplied. In doing this, he will forward the views of that wise and benevolent Philosopher to whom these pages owe their birth. Book Morals in Evolution Vol 2

Download or read book Morals in Evolution Vol 2 written by L. T. Hobhouse and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05-05 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Morals in Evolution, Vol. 2: A Study in Comparative Ethics The spirit being thus materialized appears to enjoy an independent existence of its own. Here we touch the central contradiction of Animism. What at first appears as merely the animating principle of a material body turns out to be itself quasi-substantial and capable of existence apart from that body. We must not press Animism for a logical solution of the question how this can be, for Animism remains Animism precisely because the difficulty has not been faced. The soul of Animism is clearly a Conception formed to unify and in a manner Gxplain the visible functions and processes of the body. It underlies the sensible and material, and sets out to explain them. But it turns out to be itself just such another visible and material thing - only thinner and less palpable - a mere double of the appearances which it should explain. For the primitive mind cannot grasp an object of thought with out transforming it into an object of sense. It needs a principle, connecting things that it can see or hear, and by a confusion of categories it makes of it merely another thing that it can see and hear.
