Book The Scientist s Atom and the Philosopher s Stone

Download or read book The Scientist s Atom and the Philosopher s Stone written by Alan Chalmers and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-06-04 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on the results of his own scholarly research as well as that of others the author offers, for the first time, a comprehensive and documented history of theories of the atom from Democritus to the twentieth century. This is not history for its own sake. By critically reflecting on the various versions of atomic theories of the past the author is able to grapple with the question of what sets scientific knowledge apart from other kinds of knowledge, philosophical knowledge in particular. He thereby engages historically with issues concerning the nature and status of scientific knowledge that were dealt with in a more abstract way in his What Is This Thing Called Science?, a book that has been a standard text in philosophy of science for three decades and which is available in nineteen languages. Speculations about the fundamental structure of matter from Democritus to the seventeenth-century mechanical philosophers and beyond are construed as categorically distinct from atomic theories amenable to experimental investigation and support and as contributing little to the latter from a historical point of view. The thesis will provoke historians and philosophers of science alike and will require a revision of a range of standard views in the history of science and philosophy. The book is key reading for students and scholars in History and Philosophy of Science and will be instructive for and provide a challenge to philosophers, historians and scientists more generally.

Download or read book Atoms and Elements written by David M. Knight and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2018-12-12 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1967. The impression is sometimes given that the Atomic Theory was revived in the early years of the nineteenth century by John Dalton, and that continuously from then on it has played a vital role in chemistry. The aim of this study is to revise this over-simplified picture. Atomic explanations seemed to chemists to go beyond the facts, to fail to lend themselves to mathematical expression, and to deny the ultimate simplicity and unity of all matter. Most, therefore, rejected them. Meanwhile, physicists were developing a whole range of atomic theories to explain the physical properties of bodies in terms of very simple atoms or particles. During the last thirty years of the century the position changed, as physicists and chemists came to agree on a common atomic theory. But the last prominent opponents of atomism were not converted until the early years of the twentieth century, by which time studies of radioactivity had made it clear that the billiard-ball Daltonian atom must, in any case, be abandoned.

Book Atomic Order

Download or read book Atomic Order written by Enrico Cantore and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intention of Atomic Order is to encourage and contribute to the dialogue between philosophers and scientists by discussing a concrete example of scientific discovery according to a method acceptable and understandable to both sides. This discussion takes simultaneously into account the scientific and philosophical methodologies and mentalities. By regarding "pure" science or "pure" philosophy as limiting cases, it becomes evident that basic questions are best posed and answered by emphasiz ing the deeply embedded complementary relationship between the two. The example chosen is atomic physics, and a systematic method is developed to illuminate the philosophical structure of this science--and science generally--from within. The book consists of two parts. The first part is devoted to the problem of atomic order as discovered and verified by physics, from the speculations of Dalton to the consequences of modern quantum mechanics. These chapters will afford a telescopic, historical review to the scientific reader and a reliable, understandable account of the physical discoveries and theories to the nonscientist. The second part analyzes the presuppositions, guiding principles, and implications that made possible the development of atomic physics and that impart a humanistic meaning to it. In separate chapters are discussed the epistemological structure of atomic physics, the new conception of matter implicit in the quantum theory, and the ontological implications of atomic order. It is seen that, in this area, science and philosophy are inextricably interpenetrated. A philosophic problematic is immanent in creative atomic science, as is evidenced by the numerous reflections and speculations of scientists that are quoted in the book. Conversely, an interest in scientific research is indispensable for a modern philosopher, and the philosopher may well be surprised and encouraged on recognizing the role already being played by philosophy in the supposedly pragmatic world of science.Dr. Cantore brings an ecumenical cast Lof mind to the healing of the bjcultural split between the humanists and the scientists. The recipient of a doctorate in physics and another in philosophy, he has drawn from both fields in a book dedicated to "making the educated public more aware of the need and method for a new synthesis between the two cultures."

Book The Atomic Theory of Lucretius

Download or read book The Atomic Theory of Lucretius written by John Masson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Atomic Theory of Lucretius: Contrasted With Modern Doctrines of Atoms and Evolution In modern scientific thought we find a parallel which helps us to realize how Lucretius's atomic theory taught him to regard Nature, and how his conception of Matter developed into a naive theory of Evolution. Recent inquiry and Specula tion regarding the process of Evolution, the. Origin of Life and the potency of Matter, as illustrated by Tyndall's famous Presidential address, will enable us to realize more clearly, by comparison, what Lucretius's actual belief on these points was.
