Book The Philosophical Basis of Religion

Download or read book The Philosophical Basis of Religion written by John Watson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophical Basis of Religion: A Series of Lectures Six of the lectures contained in this volume - the third, fourth, fifth, seventh, sixteenth and seventeenth - were delivered in April of this year before the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences, Brooklyn, U.S.A.; the two first were composed at the same time, and were intended to be introductory to the course; while the substance of the sixth, together with the eighth, ninth, tenth, eleventh, twelfth, thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth were read some years ago to the Theological Alumni Association of the University with which I have the honour to be connected. The lectures which constitute the body of this work are mainly essays in the reconstruction and history of religious belief. The importance of the problem and the pressing need of its solution will hardly be denied by any one who realizes the significance of the unrest and confusion of ideas which have invaded our modern life. The appeal to external authority in any form does not in our day carry conviction even to those who make it. Nothing short of a complete revision of current theological ideas, as I am convinced, can bring permanent satisfaction to our highly reflective age. Book Basic Modern Philosophy of Religion

Download or read book Basic Modern Philosophy of Religion written by Frederick Ferré and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-19 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a reasoned, comprehensive understanding of what religion is as well as a clear and critical assessment of whether, in the light of modern developments in philosophy, contemporary thinking people can responsibly maintain religious belief in God. The book is divided into three major sections: the first deals with what all religions may be said to have in common; the second discusses theistic religion and the issue of intellectually responsible belief in God; the third examines current developments within a particular theistic religion, Christianity. Originally published in 1968, the book is basic, both in the nature of the issues it discusses and in the clarity and comprehensiveness of its presentation; it is varied in the arguments and perspectives dealt with; it provides an introduction to philosophical thinking through the problems of philosophy of religion; and it deals seriously with controversial movements in theology.

Book Religious Philosophy as Multidisciplinary Comparative Inquiry

Download or read book Religious Philosophy as Multidisciplinary Comparative Inquiry written by Wesley J. Wildman and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2010-11-05 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What can philosophy contribute to the study of religion? This book argues that the study of religion needs philosophy in the form of multidisciplinary comparative inquiry. Contradicting the current tendency to regard philosophical reflection and the academic study of religion as independent endeavors best kept apart, Wesley J. Wildman brings them together, offering a broader vision than that of traditional "philosophy of religion" and surmounting many of its difficulties. His newer conception of "religious philosophy" is well suited to the modern, multicultural, secular university. Through multidisciplinary comparative inquiry, religious philosophy allows for a variety of approaches—from historical and analytical work to evocative description and theoretical evaluation of truth claims—and both secular and religious thinkers participate. The tasks and varieties of religious philosophy as they arc across the world's religions and philosophies are discussed along with religious philosophy's modern and postmodern contexts. Wildman's thoughtful and thought-provoking book will be essential reading for all those concerned with the study of religion, present and future.

The chapters were originally presented as the Hibbert Lectures in 1931 at University College London and the University of Manchester. The texts are expanded and elaborated to present a cohesive text, first published in 1937. Exploring free rational thinking, the book encourages reflection on the principals on which religion rests and addresses themes such as knowledge and experience, evolution, positivism, mystical experience, divine immanence, beauty and morality.

Book A Platonic Philosophy of Religion

Download or read book A Platonic Philosophy of Religion written by Daniel A. Dombrowski and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Platonic Philosophy of Religion challenges traditional views of Plato's religious thought, arguing that these overstate the case for the veneration of Being as opposed to Becoming. Daniel A. Dombrowski explores how process or neoclassical perspectives on Plato's view of God have been mostly neglected, impoverishing both our view of Plato and our view of what can be said in contemporary philosophy of religion on a Platonic basis. Looking at the largely ignored later dialogues, Dombrowski finds a dynamic theism in Plato and presents a new and very different Platonic philosophy of religion. The work's interpretive framework derives from the application of process philosophy and discusses the continuation of Plato's thought in the works of Hartshorne and Whitehead.

Book The Philosophical Basis of Theism

Download or read book The Philosophical Basis of Theism written by Samuel Harris and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-14 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophical Basis of Theism: An Examination of the Personality of Man to Ascertain His Capacity to Know and Serve God, and the Validity of the Principles Underlying the Defence of Theism When I began to give instruction in systematic theology, the discussions in the class-room were continually forcing us back to preliminary philosophical questions, pertaining to the reality, processes and limits of human knowledge, and to the constitution of man as a personal being. I thus found it would facilitate our work to treat these questions together in a course of preliminary lectures on the Philosophical Basis of Theism. Students in successive classes have found these lectures and discussions helpful both in their studies of Apologetics, Theodicy and the Philosophy of Religion and in the clear and intelligent apprehension of the Christian truth and life. Many of them, from year to year, have assured me that they had been greatly helped by them and have expressed their earnest desire for their publication. From these annual lectures and discussions this volume has grown up. I publish it, partly because, with the volume before us as a text book to refer to, I shall have more time for examining with my classes the subjects which belong more distinctively to systematic theology; and also with the hope that discussions, which have already been helpful to many young men, may be of service to others who are striving to solve the great theological and religious problems of our times.
