Book excerpt: The nineteenth century was the epoch of nation building for the Bulgarians under Ottoman rule. In this book, comparisons and analogies are made between the Bulgarian Revival and other regions, epochs, ideological trends, and events. These latter are taken from two major areas—Western Europe ("Renaissance," "Enlightenment," "Romanticism," the French Revolution, and national liberation movements), and Russia (the "agrarian question," "populism" and "utopian socialism," "revolutionary democrats," and the Russian Revolution of 1905). Historical facts about the Revival were instrumentalized for political purposes, such as the fostering of national and state loyalties through the reproduction of identities, or, directly, as the legitimating/contesting of a current political regime under the guise of disputes over historical legacy. Ideological mobilization took place in the form of nationalism, right-wing authoritarianism (shading into fascism), and communism. The author sets in relief some of the mechanisms and logic of the two grand narratives under the sign of nationalism, and of Marxism.

Book excerpt: We were in the mids of 2019 when we decided to organize a young researchers conference as the most important transnational event, subsequent to the inauguration of the UNESCO Chair of Culture Policy and Cultural Diplomacy of Istanbul Bilgi University established in 2018, held together with the chairs working in the same field. While deciding on the method, content, and form of participation of the conference we consulted with UNESCO chairs, with which we have been in cooperation for a long time. As a result, we decided to invite “young” researchers who are in the early stages of their academic career, irrespective of their age, and who have had their master’s degree and/or conducting doctoral studies. Our purpose was to ensure that they would start a dialogue with their colleagues in similar statuses and benefit from the comments of reviewers having experience in the profession, through the assessment of their presentations. We wished the conference that we planned to last two days to address the main themes of cultural policy. Hence, we projected holding of five sessions on the themes of “Culture as Agent in International Relations,” “Managing and Sharing Cultural Heritage,” “Cities: New Actors of Cultural Policy,” “Cultural Industries: Film as a Case,” and “Culture and Arts in all Their Forms.” Our call for applications has been welcomed with considerable interest. At that time, another thing happened as well. We wanted those young researchers would meet face-to-face, get to know each other, and exchange their views outside of the conference. However, the pandemic broke out and we were faced with the choices of postponing the conference or acknowledging to hold it online, due to travel prohibitions and lockdowns. As a result, the second alternative prevailed to maintain the excitement of the studies of the researchers. Our conference was held online, while Covid-19 was reigning with all its severity, on 21-22 August 2020. At the conference, papers of a total of eighteen researchers in charge at universities or working professionally in the sector in four continents took place. The fact that almost all of the researchers included the original features of the practice, which emerged from the theoretical literature in different subfields of cultural policy, but which they followed closely or were a part of directly, in their analyzes, was attention inviting. At the same time, it was possible to see in the presentations the traces of the (mostly negative) impacts of the international political environment, which continues with tensions, hot or cold conflicts, and inequalities, in addition to the oppressive political environment prevailing in the countries of today, on cultural policy. On the other hand, the lack of presentation and discussion of enough examples concerning cultural policies at the city scale was noteworthy. However, the quest of the young ones working in these disciplines, for new concepts and different methodological approaches, was extremely clear.

Seeking to make visible not only the pervasiveness of oil in society and culture but also its power, Oil Fictions stages a critical intervention that aligns with the broader goals of the energy humanities. Exploring literature and film about petroleum as a genre of world literature, Oil Fictions focuses on the ubiquity of oil as well as the cultural response to petroleum in postcolonial states. The chapters engage with African, South American, South Asian, Iranian, and transnational petrofictions and cover topics such as the relationship of colonialism to the fossil fuel economy, issues of gender in the Thermocene epoch, and discussions of migration, precarious labor, and the petro-diaspora. This unique exploration includes testimonies of the oil encounter—through memoirs, journals, and interviews—from a diverse geopolitical grid, ranging from the Permian Basin to the Persian Gulf. By engaging with non-Western literary responses to petroleum in a concentrated, sustained way, this pathbreaking book illuminates the transnational dimensions of the discourse on oil. Book excerpt: Contributions reprinted in this book highlight some of the wide ranging ways in which the issues of culture and identity can be approached in a literary text, while focusing on the ways in which cultural encounters have been changing both the world and its reflection in literature. The beginning of the twenty first century is an appropriate time to repay careful attention to these issues. Understanding how our perception of the Other changes with the concept of the world we inhabit, we want to emphasize the rising importance of fostering cultural pluralism and global understanding. Having based their research on widespread readings in academia, such as deconstruction, post-colonialism, post-modernism, new historicism, and narratology, the authors of these papers proceed by addressing the metaphor of travel as one of the strongest metaphors for the evolution of mankind, especially if considered under the light of the historically and politically imposed opposition between the progressive western and the static eastern or African societies. However, as the end of the imperialist era brought about poignant awareness of cultural relativism, as well as deconstruction of the great narrative of progress, facing the Other as an unconceptualized entity became a major moral concern of a modern traveller. It is pronounced that this concern should be textually testified to dramatize the human inability to avoid verbal appropriation of the other. The final question we seek to answer is whether the era of advanced technology and globalisation, along with a post-modern ironical attitude to hyper realities and textual transparencies, has rendered the sphere of the text the only available point of concern of contemporary literature and thought in general. ... For its argumentation strongly founded in recent literary studies and humanities in general, its interdisciplinary nature and its focus on the actual global problems of abrupt cultural change and exchange, its heightened understanding of the necessity of coexistence of differences in a changing world, its spirit of tolerance, and its international spirit in general, we assume this collection will not only attract academic literary scholars but will also appeal to the general reading public.
