Book The Laureate of Pessimism

Download or read book The Laureate of Pessimism written by Bertram Dobell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-17 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Laureate of Pessimism: A Sketch of the Life, and Character of James Thomson Bv Author of the City of Dreadful Night Night, while Thomson, brought up as Arnold was, might conceivably have been the author of Literafi ture and Dogma -was unable to make a sufficient income by his pen to supply his wants, it is no wonder that suffering under the dis advantages of poverty and unpopular opinions, was scarcely able to gain a bare subsistence by his writings, and remained almost to the end of his career unknown and unappreciated. He dared to transgress that most stringent of all the command ments of the British Philistine, Thou shalt, before all else, be respectable, and he paid the due penalty for his contumacy. James Thomson was born at Port Glasgow on November 23, 1834. He was thus a scion of the Victorian period, and though he was during his whole life at war with most of its tendencies, it was not the less impossible for him to escape from being influenced by the spirit of the time. Even the revolter against convention, however he may strive against its influence, cannot altogether eliminate its virus from his veins. Had Thomson been born a generation later he would, I think, have had a happier life, and would have found a much more sympathetic and appreciative audience. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous studies of James Thomson [B.V.] failed to consider adequately the significant relationship between the man and his poetry, a failure which Mrs. Walker corrects in the present work. That poet of the Victorian Age who was so correctly labeled "The Laureate of Pessimism" will find renewed appreciation from students of the period who read this book.

Book Victorian Poetry

Download or read book Victorian Poetry written by Isobel Armstrong and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-30 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Victorian Poetry: Poetry, Poetics and Politics, Isobel Armstrong rescued Victorian poetry from its longstanding sepia image as ‘a moralised form of romantic verse' and unearthed its often subversive critique of nineteenth-century culture and politics. In this uniquely comprehensive and theoretically astute new edition, Armstrong provides an entirely new preface that notes the key advances in the criticism of Victorian poetry since her classic work was first published in 1993. A new chapter on the alternative fin de siècle sees Armstrong discuss Michael Field, Rudyard Kipling, Alice Meynell and a selection of Hardy lyrics. The extensive bibliography acts as a key resource for students and scholars alike.
