Book Alpacas Sheep and Men

Download or read book Alpacas Sheep and Men written by Benjamin S. Orlove and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alpacas, Sheep, and Men: The Wool Export Economy and Regional Society in Southern Peru investigates the response of the Sicuani region in southern Peru to the wool export economy and its consequent integration into the nation-state in the late nineteenth century. The book traces the economic and political conflicts engendered by the export economy, such as those between landlords and peasants in the countryside and landlords versus traders in town. It also examines how these conflicts shaped the metamorphosis of a closed, isolated, localized society into an open one and its incorporation into national politics as well as global economics. Comprised of 11 chapters, this book begins with a review of the theories of modernization and dependency, followed by a discussion on the development of the world market for wool and the component elements of the wool economy of the entire southern Peru. Subsequent chapters focus on the regional society in more detail, with emphasis on the concept of region and the economic activities of different sectors; variation in forms of land tenure and labor relations in two provinces; the relations among herders, peasants, and artisans; and regional politics. The three major groups of artisans and workers in the region who use wool are considered, namely, urban furriers, textile mill workers, and rural weavers. The book concludes with an analysis of the fundamental importance of the wool export economy in the Sicuani region using the sectorial model. This monograph should be of interest to students and anthropologists.

Book excerpt: Known for their woolly charm, sure-footed strength, and a propensity to spit at you if you bother them too much, llamas have had a rich and diverse history. Since their domestication high in the Andes, they have been farmed, smuggled, sacrificed, and sometimes kept around just to be petted. They have functioned at different times as luxury commodities, literary muses, and national symbols, and they have served by turns as beasts of burden, circus performers, and even golf caddies. In this book, Helen Cowie charts the fascinating history of llamas and their close relatives, alpacas, guanacos, and vicuñas. Cowie illustrates how deeply the Incas venerated llamas and shows how the animals are still cherished in their native lands in Peru and Bolivia, remaining central to Andean culture. She also tells the story of attempts to introduce llamas and alpacas to Britain, the United States, and Australia, where they are used today for trekking, wool production, and even as therapy animals. Packed with llama drama and alpaca facts, this book will delight animal lovers, fans of natural history, and anyone who just can’t resist these inimitable animals’ off-the-charts cuteness factor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last decade Peru has consistently been the fastest-growing economy in Latin America, and unlike some of its neighbours, has been remarkably resilient to global headwinds, registering positive growth rates for an uninterrupted 18 years through to 2016. While the pace of growth has slowed as the long commodities boom ebbed after 2012, Peru recorded an average annual growth rate of 5.9% in 2005-15, almost double the 3% rate for Latin America as a whole. Stakeholders and investors will now be looking to efforts by the new government, which took office in July 2016, to address problems, implement additional reforms and spur further economic growth.

Book The Peruvian Industrial Labor Force

Download or read book The Peruvian Industrial Labor Force written by David Chaplin and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a sociological analysis of change and mobility in the labor force of thirteen of the largest textile factories in Peru. The book explores demographic and social variables such as age, sex, birthplace, migration, seniority, current and former occupations, and employment status as possible indices of rationality in the Peruvian labor market. There are two especially striking empirical findings: the Peruvian textile industry has not been plagued by the high levels of labor turnover generally assumed to be inevitable in underdeveloped countries; since 1955 women are being shut out of better-paying manufacturing jobs because of welfare laws that make them more expensive to employ than men. Originally published in 1967. Book Farming Alpacas

Download or read book Farming Alpacas written by Fiona Vanderbeek and published by NSW Agriculture. This book was released on 2018-03-28 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many new entrants to the alpaca industry a major allure is the thought of breeding these beautiful, intelligent and easily-handled animals. The challenging question that new breeders must ask themselves is “Why do I want to breed alpacas?” This leads to other vital questions – “Huacaya, suri, or both?”; “White, coloured, or a bit of everything?”; “How much do I need to spend?”; “How many should I buy?” For some people purchasing alpacas, the initial reason is as a small-scale hobby farm. However for many of these people, as they begin to breed and learn more about their alpacas, their focus changes and they use their knowledge to improve the quality of their stock – whether for fibre production, for stud breeding, or with an eye to winning show ribbons. This book is a basic guide to some of the skills and practices of alpaca production.
