Book A Life s Retrospect

Download or read book A Life s Retrospect written by Granville Moody and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Life's Retrospect: Autobiography of Rev. Granville Moody This book is strictly an autobiography so far as the writing and collecting of previously printed matter is concerned. The name "Retrospect" is Dr. Moody's own selection for a title. He quotes: "The retrospect of a life well spent affords peace of mind in old age." I have endeavored to arrange the subjects and events in chronological order, but found some difficulty, and possibly did not in every case succeed. Many of the newspaper clippings were without date. Dr. Moody, like Paul, was in the habit of "going off at a word;" that is, the association of ideas suggested something kindred to the subject in hand, and he turned aside from the direct narrative to notice that, and, in some instances, the two circumstances were far apart in point of time. I have grouped together facts and incidents of a similar nature, arranging them chronologically, as nearly as the data enabled me so to do. The reports from charges, dreams, advocacy of reforms, and prayers, illustrate this grouping of kindred events. In the material furnished by Dr. Moody there were a number of sermons and addresses, lectures and essays, which it was impossible to embody in the limits of a single volume. Book The Pastor of the Pilgrims a Biography of John Robinson Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Pastor of the Pilgrims a Biography of John Robinson Classic Reprint written by Walter H. Burgess and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pastor of the Pilgrims a Biography of John Robinson The following pages give an independent study of the work of the Pastor of the Pilgrim Fathers and those associated with him. Robinson and his companions loved England with a passionate love, yet they were compelled to leave the land of their birth to secure freedom to worship according to the dictates of their conscience. Two sentences from Robinson's writings will explain the position: "For the commonwealth and kingdom," as we honour it above all the States in the world, so would we thankfully embrace the meanest corner in it, at the extremest conditions of any people in the kingdom." Again he says, "For our country we do not forsake it, but are by it forsaken, and expelled by most extreme laws and violent prescriptions, contrived and executed by the prelates and on their own behalf." To say, as has recently been said, that it was their own intolerance which drove these pilgrims to Holland is a gross misinterpretation of the facts. Besides the identification of the early home and the parentage of John Robinson, these pages throw a little fresh light upon the Southworths and Carvers and others connected with the Pilgrim Father movement. Gervase Neville is identified, and the anonymous opponent of Robinson in one of his earliest controversies is named. The history of the obscure Church in the western parts of England is unfolded, and an attempt made to settle the vexed question of the identity of John Smith. The Appendices give illustrative extracts from contemporary documents. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Married Priest After finishing humanities, Charles studied law along with Perreyve. Legal science offered no attraction to them. Perreyve, on the very day of his first communion, had determined to conse crate himself to God. When nineteen years of age, Charles Perraud, also, fancied that he had heard the call from on high and made up his mind to become a priest. Somewhat later, when his brother resolved to enter a congregation, he thought that in it also should he enter upon the sacred ministry. The parents, however, of the two youths wished to try their juvenile vocations and refused to permit them to carry out at once their plan. Only on November 1st, 1853, was Charles allowed to go and join his brother at the re-opened Oratory, rue du Regard. At the same time Perreyve joined along with him. Book Life of Principal Harper D D Classic Reprint

Download or read book Life of Principal Harper D D Classic Reprint written by Andrew Thomson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Principal Harper, D. D Principal Harper as a minister of religion and a Professor of Theology, in addition to the excellences of his character which shone so brightly in the more private walks of life, ought to be sufficient of them selves to render his biography, if written with a fair measure of success, both interesting and eminently suggestive. But beyond this, his work and influence as a Christian citizen and man of affairs, who helped to originate, direct, and help forward to triumph great public movements with which political and social as well as religious progress was identified, ought greatly to enhance the value of such a memoir. In regard to that branch of the Presbyterian Church in Scotland of which he was a member and a minister, it may be affirmed, in a modified degree, that he was so closely associated with all its most important public acts, during a long series of years, that the narrative of his life becomes, at various points, also the history of his Church. We are persuaded that, according to the measure in which the facts of his life are known, they will justify the high encomium of one of the most' eminent of our Scottish judges, that Principal Harper has left the inheritance of a great and honoured name to his family and country.' Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Memories of a Clergymanś Wife: Written by Herself In introducing to the public these memoirs, I submit for their perusal and examination many details and circumstances of my life, with the numerous and trying ordeals through which I have had to pass in my career through the world during many years. I have met with troubles, encountered trials, disappoint ments and afflictions; many of them severe and annoying, as my readers, who will take the time to peruse my work, will ascertain. In it they will discover that the path through life is surrounded with thorns and briers that frequently wound and lacerate the feelings very much; and how the meek and good alone can sustain themselves under their ofttimes heavy pressure, unless their hopes are based upon their faith in Christ, who has promised. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Christian Life in the Ministry: Three Lenten Lectures in the General Theological Seminary, 1883 WE have no time for anything prefatory. The essential nature of the Kingdom of God among men, the drift of our recent Church-life, and such personal experience as I have had, establish in my mind the conviction that the work to which you are so near, and are drawing nearer every day, needs nothing so much as that it be made deeper work; that we need to deepen it more than we need to extend it, to diversify it, or to enlighten it with mere intellectual light, and that we cannot deepen it much in others unless we deepen it first in ourselves. Book Autobiography of Rev A B Wright

Download or read book Autobiography of Rev A B Wright written by J. C. Wright and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Autobiography of Rev. A. B. Wright: Of the Holston Conference, M. E. Church In young manhood my father began to keep a journal of his life. His purpose was to leave it for the benefit of his children. He had no idea that it would ever be published to the world as a book. Several years ago it became apparent to him that its publication would be necessary, so that each of his children might have a copy. Hundreds of others, outside of our own family, who had a knowledge of his purpose, urged him to publish his life, in the belief that it would be beneficial to the world. He finally consented to do so, and requested the writer to edit and prepare his papers for publication after his death. I have endeavored to do this honestly and in the fear of God. I have tried, so far as the rules of good language would at all tolerate, to retain the mannerisms of my father. He was a man of fine natural endowment, and had acquired much by extensive reading, but was without any literary training. I anticipate two classes of critics. One class will object to whatever changes I have made, and the other will fault me for not making more. I have in no instance changed the thought of my father, but only changed the language. I have done this work amid other heavy labors. To me it has been a sad but loving task. I prepared the chapter containing his death. In compliance with this request, I immediately wrote to the widow of Mr. Clark, informing her of the action of the association, and asking for the loan of such papers as were in her possession, and which would aid me in the undertaking.
