Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Personal History of David Copperfield: With Forty Illustrations It would concern the reader little, perhaps, to know how sorrowfully the pen is laid down at the close of a two-years' imaginative task or how an Author feels as if he were dismissing some portion of himself into the shadowy world, when a crowd of the creatures of his brain are going from him for ever. Yet, I had nothing else to tell; unless, indeed, I were to confess (which might be of less moment still), that no one can ever believe this Narrative, in the reading, more than I. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Personal History of David Copperfield, Vol. 1 I do not find it easy to get sufficiently far away from this Book, in the first sensations of having finished it, to refer to it with the composure which this formal heading would seem to require. My interest in it, is so recent and strong; and my mind is so divided between pleasure and regret - pleasure in the achievement of a long design, regret in the separation from many companions - that I am in danger of wearying the reader whom I love, with personal confidences, and private emotions. Besides which, all that I could say of the Story, to any purpose, I have endeavoured to say in it. It would concern the reader little, perhaps, to know how sorrowfully the pen is laid down at the close of a two-years' imaginative task; or how an Author feels as if he were dismissing some portion of himself into the shadowy world, when a crowd of the creatures of his brain are going from him for ever. Yet, I have nothing else to tell; unless, indeed, I were to confess (which might be of less moment still) that no one can ever believe this Narrative, in the reading, more than I have believed it in the writing. Instead of looking back, therefore, I will look forward. I cannot close this Volume more agreeably to myself, than with a hopeful glance towards the time when I shall again put forth my two green leaves once a month, and with a faithful remembrance of the genial sun and showers that have fallen on these leaves of David Copperfield, and made me happy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Personal History of David Copperfield, Vol. 2 I got down to Yarmouth in the evening, and went to the inn. I knew that Peggotty's spare room - my room - was likely to have occupation enough in a little while, if that great Visitor, before whose presence all the living must give place, were not already in the house; so I betook myself to the inn, and dined there, and engaged my bed. It was ten o'clock when I went out. Many of the shops were shut, and the town was dull. When I came to Omer and J oram's, I found the shutters up, but the shop-door standing open. As I could obtain a perspective view of Mr. Omer inside, smoking his pipe by the parlour-door, I entered, and asked him how he was. Book David Copperfield Charles Dickens Classic Edition

Download or read book David Copperfield Charles Dickens Classic Edition written by Charles Dickens and published by . This book was released on 2021-03-07 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David copperfield, in full The Personal History of David Copperfield, novel by English writer Charles Dickens, published serially in 1849-50 and in book form in 1850. David Copperfield has always been among Dickens's most popular novels and was his own "favourite child." The work is semiautobiographical, and, although the title character differs from his creator in many ways, Dickens related early personal experiences that had meant much to him--his work in a factory, his schooling and reading, and (more cursorily) his emergence from parliamentary reporting into successful novel writing. The story is told in the first person by a middle-aged David Copperfield, who is looking back on his life. David is born in Blunderstone, Suffolk, six months after the death of his father, and he is raised by his mother and her devoted housekeeper, Clara Peggotty. As a young child, he spends a few days with Peggotty at the home of her brother, Mr. Peggotty, in Yarmouth, which Mr. Peggotty shares with Ham and Emily, his orphaned nephew and niece, respectively. When the visit ends, David learns that his mother has married the cruel and controlling Mr. Edward Murdstone. That evening Murdstone's sister also moves in and assumes the management of the household.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Childhood of David Copperfield In the Introduction I have not presented any helps to study, but have contented myself with doing something to give the reading of the story a little more meaning. It is possible that the third part of the Introduction may be somewhat advanced for the pupils into whose hands this book. May come. It is meant more especially for teachers, and will, perhaps, give them some help in the comments they may make on the readings in class. But even if it is advanced for some pupils it will do them no harm to read it. It is rarely harmful to try to understand some thing written for people a little older than oneself. Download or read book David Copperfield s History of Magic written by David Copperfield and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-10-26 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this personal journey through a unique performing art, David Copperfield profiles some of the world's most groundbreaking magicians. From the sixteenth-century magistrate who wrote an early book on conjuring, to the roaring twenties and the man who fooled Houdini, to the woman who levitated, vanished, and caught bullets in her bare hands, David Copperfield's History of Magic takes you on a wild journey through the remarkable feats of some of the greatest magicians in history. The result is a sweeping tale that reveals how these astonishing performers were outsiders who used magic to escape class, challenge conventions, transform popular culture, explore the innermost workings of the human mind, and inspire scientific discovery. Their incredible stories are complemented by more than 100 never-before-seen photographs of artifacts from Copperfield's exclusive Museum of Magic, including a sixteenth-century manual on sleight-of-hand; Houdini's straitjackets, handcuffs, and water torture chamber; Dante's famous sawing-in-half apparatus; Alexander's high-tech turban that allowed him to read people's minds; and even some coins that may have magically passed through the hands of Abraham Lincoln. By the end of the book, you'll be sure to share Copperfield's passion for the power of magic. --
