Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "DAVID COPPERFIELD (Illustrated Edition)” is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. The story follows the life of David Copperfield, a young boy who is born six months after the death of his father, from childhood to maturity. David spends his early years in relative happiness with his loving mother and their kindly housekeeper, Peggotty, but when his mother remarries David is sent to lodge with Peggotty's family. His mother and her newly born child die, Peggotty marries, and since no one remains to care for David in London, he decides to run away, and he walks from London to Dover, to his only relative, an eccentric yet kind-hearted great-aunt. Many elements of the novel follow events in Dickens' own life, and it is often considered as his veiled autobiography. Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was an English writer and social critic. He created some of the world's best-known fictional characters and is regarded as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. His works enjoyed unprecedented popularity during his lifetime, and by the twentieth century critics and scholars had recognized him as a literary genius. His novels and short stories enjoy lasting popularity.

Download or read book Animals Animality and Literature written by Bruce Boehrer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-20 with total page 775 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animals, Animality, and Literature offers readers a one-volume survey of the field of literary animal studies in both its theoretical and applied dimensions. Focusing on English literary history, with scrupulous attention to the interplay between English and foreign influences, this collection gathers together the work of nineteen internationally noted specialists in this growing discipline. Offering discussion of English literary works from Beowulf to Virginia Woolf and beyond, this book explores the ways human/animal difference has been historically activated within the literary context: in devotional works, in philosophical and zoological treatises, in plays and poems and novels, and more recently within emerging narrative genres such as cinema and animation. With an introductory overview of the historical development of animal studies and afterword looking to the field's future possibilities, Animals, Animality, and Literature provides a wide-ranging survey of where this discipline currently stands.

Book Dickens and the Grown Up Child

Download or read book Dickens and the Grown Up Child written by M. Andrews and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-06 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The child who stops growing, infantile senility, the 'old-fashioned' child, child-wives and child-mothers, the rejuvenated adult - Dickens's writings parade before us a gallery of bizarre hybrids. Dickens and the Grown-up Child focuses on the complicated and unresolved relationship between childhood and adulthood in Dickens's fictional and non-fictional work. In challenging the familiar view that the source of such anomalies lies in Dickens's own childhood experiences, Malcolm Andrews explores the extent to which Dickens was heir to an older cultural debate about primitivism and progressivism, a debate which Dickens adapted to his own preoccupations with the tensions between childhood and maturity. In examining these issues, Malcolm Andrews concentrates on the fiction of Dickens's middle years, particularly David Copperfield, and on some of the journalistic essays.

Download or read book Paratexts written by Gerard Genette and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-03-13 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paratexts are those liminal devices and conventions, both within and outside the book, that form part of the complex mediation between book, author, publisher and reader: titles, forewords, epigraphs and publishers' jacket copy are part of a book's private and public history. In this first English translation of Paratexts, Gérard Genette shows how the special pragmatic status of paratextual declaration requires a carefully calibrated analysis of their illocutionary force. With clarity, precision and an extraordinary range of reference, Paratexts constitutes an encyclopedic survey of the customs and institutions as revealed in the borderlands of the text. Genette presents a global view of these liminal mediations and the logic of their relation to the reading public by studying each element as a literary function. Richard Macksey's foreword describes how the poetics of paratexts interact with more general questions of literature as a cultural institution, and situates Gennet's work in contemporary literary theory.

Luigi Giussani shows that the nature of reason expresses itself in the ultimate need for truth, goodness, and beauty. These needs constitute the fabric of the religious sense, which is evident in every human being everywhere and in all times. So strong is this sense that it leads one to desire that the answer to life's mystery might reveal itself in some way.

Book Apprenticeships

Download or read book Apprenticeships written by T. Jeffers and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-05-05 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Novels about growing up have long been loved by ordinary readers and analyzed, sometimes with more heat than light, by scholars. This book respects the interests of ordinary readers while clarifying and frequently resolving the moral, psychological, social, and occasionally religious coming-of-age dilemmas that scholars have wrestled with. Focusing on Goethe's Wilhelm Meister, Dickens's David Copperfield, James's What Maisie Knew, Forster's The Longest Journey, Lawrence's Sons and Lovers, and Santayana's The Last Puritan, Jeffers writes in a fresh, engaging style meant to give criticism a liveliness and even brilliance it has in recent decades often lacked.
