It makes a case for the library's staying power in the face of technological advancements (television, microfilm, and CD-ROM's were all once predicted as the contemporary library's heir-apparent), and devotes individual chapters to the pitfalls and prevarications of popular search engines, e-books, and the mass digitization of traditional print material.

Book Planning for a New Generation of Public Library Buildings

Download or read book Planning for a New Generation of Public Library Buildings written by Gerard B. McCabe and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2000-01-30 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The public library director needs information that helps in understanding what is involved in planning for a public library building project. This applies whether the subject is a free standing independent building, a branch library, a joint-use facility with a museum, a senior academic library, a community or junior college library, or a school library. Reading this book will not turn a reader into a qualified specialist on library buildings, but it will help librarians and others learn what should be known about a project so that they may function effectively as part of the planning team. The concept of modern libraries is moving toward interactive connections with information sources far beyond the immediate community. For the contemporary public library, this means connection to a network, with several terminals constantly online to the Internet. New library buildings must be constructed with these and other needs in mind. The public library director needs information that helps in understanding what is involved in planning for a public library building project. This applies whether the subject is a free standing independent building, a branch library, a joint-use facility with a museum, a senior academic library, a community or junior college library, or a school library. This book will help librarians and others learn what should be known about a project so that they may function effectively as part of the planning team.

Book Public Libraries in the United States 1993

Download or read book Public Libraries in the United States 1993 written by and published by U.S. Government Printing Office. This book was released on 1995 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tables in this report summarize information about public libraries in fiscal year 1993. These data were collected through the sixth Public Libraries Survey. Respondents for this census were the 8,929 public libraries identified in the 50 states and District of Columbia, by state library agencies. Over 71% of the population of legally served areas in the United States were served by fewer than 11% of public libraries; 1,454 public libraries (over 16%) reported one or more branch library outlets, with a total of 7,017; total operating expenditures for public libraries were over $4.7 billion in 1993; libraries reported a total of nearly 111,945 paid full-time equivalent (FTE) staff; and total nationwide circulation of library materials was nearly 1.6 billion, or 6.5 per capita. The report begins by presenting highlights of the findings. The introduction then describes the terminology used in the document; the universe represented by the data; data collection and use of the technology; and quality review of the data. Also included are caveats for using the data; information on ordering machine readable data and publications; and a source for further information on public library statistics. The data are presented in 19 sets of tables, which make up the major part of this report. Data is provided on staffing; operating income and expenditures; type of governance; type of administrative structure; size of collection; and service measures such as reference transactions; public service hours; interlibrary loan; circulation; and library visits. Appendices include background of the Federal-State Cooperative System (FSCS), a glossary, and a list of states with overlapping population of legal service area. (MAS)

Book Information Technology Libraries

Download or read book Information Technology Libraries written by Roy J. Adams and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-08-30 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1986, Information Technology & Libraries explores some of the issues, problems, and opportunities presented to librarians with the development of information technology. Charting the development of information technology in libraries in a historical context, the book examines the possible changes in the way society will operate and the effects on the higher education system as a background to library service. It discusses the external networks bringing in data from institution to use and the local networks which will distribute and add to the data. These will change the way libraries operate and the mechanisms employed by members of the institution to gather and analyse information. The volume, therefore, looks forward to the future of the library and the attendant effects on users, structures, management, and staff. It highlights the key issues for the library manager, and the requirements for library staff education, training, and skills. This book will be of interest to students and researchers of library & information science, library skills and education.
