Book The Persistence of Memory

Download or read book The Persistence of Memory written by Jessica Moody and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Persistence of Memory is a history of the public memory of transatlantic slavery in the largest slave-trading port city in Europe, from the end of the 18th century into the 21st century; from history to memory. Mapping this public memory over more than two centuries reveals the ways in which dissonant pasts, rather than being 'forgotten histories', persist over time as a contested public debate. This public memory, intimately intertwined with constructions of 'place' and 'identity', has been shaped by legacies of transatlantic slavery itself, as well as other events, contexts and phenomena along its trajectory, revealing the ways in which current narratives and debate around difficult histories have histories of their own. By the 21st century, Liverpool, once the 'slaving capital of the world', had more permanent and long-lasting memory work relating to transatlantic slavery than any other British city. The long history of how Liverpool, home to Britain's oldest continuous black presence, has publicly 'remembered' its own slaving past, how this has changed over time and why, is of central significance and relevance to current and ongoing efforts to face contested histories, particularly those surrounding race, slavery and empire.

Book The Routledge Handbook of Shakespeare and Memory

Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Shakespeare and Memory written by Andrew Hiscock and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-09 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Handbook of Shakespeare and Memory introduces this vibrant field of study to students and scholars, whilst defining and extending critical debates in the area. The book begins with a series of "Critical Introductions" offering an overview of memory in particular areas of Shakespeare such as theatre, print culture, visual arts, post-colonial adaptation and new media. These essays both introduce the topic but also explore specific areas such as the way in which Shakespeare’s representation in the visual arts created a national and then a global poet. The entries then develop into more specific studies of the genre of Shakespeare, with sections on Tragedy, History, Comedy and Poetry, which include insightful readings of specific key plays. The book ends with a state of the art review of the area, charting major contributions to the debate, and illuminating areas for further study. The international range of contributors explore the nature of memory in religious, political, emotional and economic terms which are not only relevant to Shakespearean times, but to the way we think and read now.

Book excerpt: Cassidy had no idea who she was or where she came from. Her earliest recollection was of meeting the people who called her a Horseman, for her ability to communicate almost telepathically with her gray mare. But they could tell her nothing about her missing memory, nor did they care. Even the community of farmers who took her in seemed to find her amnesia unremarkable. But Cassidy was plagued by a persistent, nagging doubt that the biggest part of her problem was that the world around her was not her world. Yet when the sight of common, everyday objects -- sunglasses, a saddle, a rifle -- began to trigger a flood of partial memory, Cassidy knew that something was dreadfully wrong. Worse yet, the more she remembered, the more she was certain she had come from a different world -- a realization that threatened not only her sanity, but her very life . . .

Book The Book of Revelation a New Beginning

Download or read book The Book of Revelation a New Beginning written by Terry L Newbegin and published by BalboaPress. This book was released on 2011-03-23 with total page 715 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of Revelation: A New Beginning contains the hidden secrets of Saint Johns Revelation, and as you know, it is one of the most debated and most difficult books of all the scriptures to read and understand because of the extreme symbolism tied to it. Man has always assumed the word of Gods prophets and their stories were indisputable just because of their eminence in interpreted them as being true. Man has forgotten the history of himself, Earth, God, the origin of the universe, and how the scriptures have been documented, interpreted, and strictly passed down by our ancestors and religious leaders. As symbolic as Revelation is it has nothing to do with the end days or even about a solitary Anti-Christ as we understand it nor is it about Jesus coming to save you. In truth, Saint Johns Revelation is your own guide showing you that you no longer need to look at yourself as a sinner because you have bared your cross, like Jesus, and now the time has come for you to ascend to a higher state of Mind. The book of Revelation: A New Beginning is a book that will help open the gates of your soul memories so you can become aware of your own divineness, and that you are a God too. My fellow Gods, what is coming to an end is the old ways of perceiving and understanding God. It is not that God is a mystery. It is you that is the mystery, and when fear is resolved within, you are then ready to open up to the hidden secrets behind the Book of Revelation that religions have kept as a secret for thousands of years, either on purpose or because of ignorance.
