Book excerpt: 'Oh! Monsieur is Persian? That's most extraordinary! How can someone be Persian?' Two Persian travellers, Usbek and Rica, arrive in Paris just before the death of Louis XIV and in time to witness the hedonism and financial crash of the Regency. In their letters home they report on visits to the theatre and scientific societies, and observe the manners and flirtations of polite society, the structures of power and the hypocrisy of religion. Irony and bitter satire mark their comparison of East and West and their quest for understanding. Unsettling news from Persia concerning the female world of the harem intrudes on their new identities and provides a suspenseful plot of erotic jealousy and passion. This pioneering epistolary novel and work of travel-writing opened the world of the West to its oriental visitors and the Orient to its Western readers. This is the first English translation based on the original text, revealing this lively work as Montesquieu first intended. Book excerpt: A classic work of the European Enlightenment--and one of the most popular, if scandalous, in its day--the Persian Letters captures, in an engaging epistolary format, the transformational spirit of the era. Amid an ongoing tale rife with sex, violence, and wit, the work addresses a diverse range of topics from human nature and the origins of society, to the nature and role of religious belief, the role of women, statecraft, justice, morality, and human identity. With skill and artistry, Raymond MacKenzie’s stunning new translation accurately reflects the mood and character of the work. In his richly conceived Introduction, MacKenzie seamlessly weaves together an overview of the period with details of Montesquieu’s life, including the influences that inspired the Persian Letters, the character and power of the book, and its reception. This edition also includes a Calendar of the Persian Letters, a Bibliography of Works in English, and a Bibliography of Works in French. Related texts provide insight into the legacy of the Persian Letters. They include selections from works by George Lyttelton, Voltaire, Oliver Goldsmith, and Maria Edgeworth.

Book excerpt: This richly evocative novel-in-letters tells the story of two Persian noblemen who have left their country—the modern Iran—to journey to Europe in search in wisdom. As they travel, they write home to wives and eunuchs in the harem and to friends in France and elsewhere. Their colorful observations on the culture differences between West and East conjure up Eastern sensuality, repression, and cruelty in contrast to the freer, more civilized West—but here also unworthy nobles and bishops, frivolous women in fashion, and conceited people of all kinds are satirized. Storytellers as well as letter-writers, Montesquieu’s Usbek and Rica are disrespectful and witty, but also serious moralists. Persian Letters was a succès de scandale in Paris society, and encapsulates the libertarian, critical spirit of the early eighteenth century. C. J. Betts’s translation conveys the color of the original, and his introduction examines the inner meanings of Montesquieu’s satire. This edition also includes explanatory notes, appendices, and suggestions for further reading.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Around the World to Persia: Letters Written While on the Journey as a Member of the American-Persian Relief Commission in 1918 On board the S. S. "Katori Maru" June 16th, 1918. Dear Nannie: - So far the trip has been fine. We sailed at noon June 7th. and not a single qualm have I had. The ocean seems very big and lonely, for we have not seen a solitary vessel; but our own is most comfortable. It is not very large, so the passengers come in contact a good deal, but they are a very nice lot. We have British naval officers, English civilians connected in some way with the Orient, Canadians, French, Americans, Danes, Japs, a diplomat from Chili, the Swedish Ambassador to Japan and in the second class, some Russians. Our cabin is quite large, and besides a cupboard, a chest of drawers and ourselves, contains three steamer trunks, two hat boxes, and six large bags, all, as you know, packed to bursting point. We are scarcely even conscious there of the machinery, and as both the dining-room and the Social Hall are equally quiet, it is easy to read and work. We four. Dr. Cook, Mr. McDowell and ourselves have a table in a corner and are waited on by a splendid steward. We all do full justice to the excellent meals, never forgetting the compressed meat tablets, in our trunks, for future use. Queer things happen far from home and we have actually lost a day. Friday June 14th. did not exist. Fortunately for Mr. McDowell, it was not the "Sabbath," as he is looking forward to holding service this a.m. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
