This book was released on 1987-12-01 with total page 3900 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Persian Gulf Gazette was instituted as the administration of British interests in the Gulf entered a new phase - and the final phase of direct involvement in government. The policy directives of the Foreign Office to the Political Resident in 1953 reflected the changing British role - perhaps more accurately than was realised: harmonise with US policy; maintain good relations with Saudi Arabia; resolve territorial disputes; encourage co-operation among the Gulf States. In the past the British aim had been government, disguised as advice; now it was no more than the hope of influence - disguised as assistance.

Book The End of Empire in the Gulf

Download or read book The End of Empire in the Gulf written by Tancred Bradshaw and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-10-31 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the end of the British Raj in 1947, the Foreign Office replaced the Government of India as the department responsible for the Persian Gulf, and would proceed to manage relations with the Trucial States (now the United Arab Emirates, UAE) until British withdrawal in 1971. This work is a comprehensive history of British policy in the region during that period, situated for the first time in its broad historical and political context. Tancred Bradshaw – an academic historian with extensive experience in the region – sheds light onto the discovery of oil in Abu Dhabi in the 1950s, Foreign Office attempts to instigate a long-term development policy in the region, the slow end of the British Empire, the origins of the UAE and – most importantly – the British legacy in this geopolitically crucial region today. The book relies on 40,000 pages of archival material, much of it previously unused, and will be of interest to Imperial historians, as well as anyone working on the history and politics of the Middle East and the Persian Gulf.

Book Oman in the Twentieth Century

Download or read book Oman in the Twentieth Century written by J.E. Peterson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-12 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oman was ruled by the Al Bu Sa’id for 250 years, and during this period the fortunes of the state varied considerably. But in July 1970, as a result of a palace coup, the state abruptly turned away from isolation and traditions of the past. The most obvious alteration was in the dramatic change in the outward appearance of the country, particularly as exemplified by the rejection of the long era of stagnation and the parallel emphasis on socio-economic development. In the political realm, however, the shifting balance of power and the rapid growth and diversification of the state’s administrative structure were based essentially on perennial themes in Omani politics. The interplay between four of these themes forms the basis of this study, first published in 1978. The role of the Sultan and the ruling family, the development of the administration, the exercise of tribal politics and the impact of external influences on the state are closely examined and the modifications they went in response to the various challenges of the twentieth century are discussed. The constant flux in the relative importance of each of these themes illustrates the fragile nature of the traditional Omani political system, for in the twentieth century the Al Bu Sa’id Sultanate found its precarious hold over the country challenged on a number of occasions. These challenges – ranging from the tribal and religious rebellion of 1913-20, to the Marxist-Leninist revolt in Dhufar – are also analysed in detail, together with the response of the Sultanate to their impact.
