Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Genesis Of physical forces; if, in short, there is no God, no consciousness at the beginning as at the end of all things, then nothing can be more melancholy than our position. Our higher desires which seem to separate us so immeasurably from the brutes, we have, only that they may be cut down by the keen edge of time, and wither in barren disappointment our reason we have, only to enable us to see and measure the brevity of our span, and so live our little day, not joyously as the un foreseeing beasts, but shadowed by the hastening gloom of anticipated, inevitable and everlasting night; our faculty for worshipping and for striving to serve and to resemble the perfect living One, that faculty which seems to be the thing of greatest promise and Of finest quality in us, and to which is certainly due the largest part of what is admirable and profitable in human history, is the most mocking and foolishest of all our parts; But, God be thanked, He has revealed himself to us has given us in the harmonious and progressive movement of all around us, sufficient indication that, even in the material world, intelligence and purpose reign an indication which becomes immensely clearer as we pass into the world of man; and which, in presence of the person and life of Christ attains the brightness of a conviction which illuminates all besides. This book was released on 2016-09-08 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Genesis and Science, or the First Leaves of the Bible Where I could not adopt their arguments or make their conclusions my own, I endeavoured to show, from what are deemed authoritative statements, how great is the confusion among themselves, and how utterly without weight and value, in consequence, must be the assertions hazarded by scientists against the Book of Genesis. If censured, as I shall be, for not recklessly deciding some of the burning questions of the day, I shall quietly submit and take it very patiently. Is there not a time for everything '3 If revelation has long since closed its canon, certainly science has not, and before this is done, it is vain to apprehend danger for the cause of truth. Book A New Commentary on Genesis Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A New Commentary on Genesis Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Franz Delitzsch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-26 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Commentary on Genesis, Vol. 2 Two solemn revelations open in ch. Xv. The second section of the life of Abraham. The narrative falls into two halves. It is impossible to regard all from beginning to end as occurring in vision. For (1) if one revelation takes place at night, or at least with a transposition to night, the other is made in the day, and indeed at eventide, the sun being at ver. 12 about to set, and at ver. 17 actually set. And (2) the account of Abraham's believing reception of the promise of a posterity numerous as the stars of heaven ver. 6 separates what pre ceded from what follows, which though it appears from the mm, 7 a, to have immediately succeeded, has yet its own special introduction. Dillmann here carries analysis even farther beyond the bounds of the discernible than Wellhausen does. The safest criterion from Gen. I. To ex. Vi., and one which must only be relinquished for cogent reasons, is the Divine names. The use of these is in both halves of ch. Xv. The same. In both mm is the prevailing one, and with it occurs once in each mm ms, to be read according to the punctuation trig: 'g'kf, a combination of Divine names which, thus written, is unusual. This mm 'j'in, here twice used, gives to this historical picture in its two departments, as to the prophetic image, Isa. 1. 4 - 9, where it is four times used.
