Symptomatic of this, a wide range of narrative fiction from sentimental novels to sensational drama identifies a foundational link between liberal institutions and performative utterances. Auctions, trials, marriages, and contracts, this fiction contends, all depend on the self-constituting authority of words and performances which anybody and everybody can appropriate and are always subject to misfiring. Rather than viewing this as a liberatory and egalitarian political force, however, writers from Herman Melville and James Fenimore Cooper to Captain Mayne Reid and E.D.E.N. Southworth insist that such naked authority must be supplemented. A broad swath of 1850s literature insists that this supplement ought to come from Christianity. Anticipating thinkers like Carl Schmitt and Giorgio Agamben, these works suggest that legitimate political authority depends upon its ability to represent Christian transcendence and account for revealed truth, something firmly outside of speech acts’ and performance’s purview. In so doing, this diverse body of fiction registers a desire to reconstitute political authority on transcendent and representable ground, augmenting institutional reliance on mere words and assuaging the contemporary crises of confidence and authority.

Value and waste are not antithetical, they are just not comparable issues. We achieve added value to the modern Lean Enterprise through synergies that bring sustainable economic benefits to the company. Such synergies use the complementarity theory developed by Milgrom and Roberts in 1990 on the principle that we can achieve maximal gains via the joint investment on complement activities and not investing. Complementarity is not something specific to Lean Enterprises; however, Lean Enterprises can benefit the most from such a concept. The reason is that Lean uses the principle of achieving more with less effort. Less effort does not mean the use of fewer resources, but the use of resources in a complementary way in order to achieve more, rather than using them. Complementarity is a feature by design. Complementarity by design will help modern Lean companies have an easier transition in the digital era and the new world of Industry 4.0. In this second edition, we have preserved the method of how to achieve Lean and have enhanced it to show how to move towards modern Lean within Industry 4.0 paradigm. However, if a company has not yet made the Lean step, there is no need to make that step first before yielding the benefits. Technology is the key. Modern Lean Enterprise strengthens out of the old paradigm into the new one of Industry 4.0. Because of evolution, such an enterprise achieves optimal technological complementarity necessary for synergies that sustain increasing profits.

He seeks to write performatively, to offer poetic or aesthetic renderings of performance events in order to capture some sense of their nature. In his quest for the spirit of theatrical performances in a collection of essays, Pelias, of course, asks more of the written word than the word can deliver. Yet the attempt is both desirable -- and necessary. To discuss performance without some accounting for its essence as art, he asserts, is at best misleading, at worst, fraud. Pelias divides his efforts to present performance events into three general categories: "Performing Every Day", "On Writing and Performing", and "Being a Witness". As the title implies, "Performing Every Day" focuses on performances ranging from the daily business of enacting roles to the telling of tales that make life meaningful. It incorporates essays about the ongoing process of presenting oneself in everyday life; the gender script that insists that men enact manly performances; the classroom performances of teachers and students; stories of gender, class, and race that mark identity; and a performance installation entitled "A Day's Talk", which is a record of talk produced in a day's time accompanied by reflections about and responses to that talk. "On Writing and Performing" examines the written script and performance practices. It contains a description of a struggle between a writer and a performer as they protect their own interests; an intimate look at an apprehensive performer; a short play entitled "The Audition", which deals with what it means to be an actor; a chronicle ofperformance process from the perspective of an actor; and a brief essay on the nature of performance. "Being a Witness" examines performance from the perspective of the audience and the director. It includes essays on the experience of being an audience member; viewing theatre in the context of New York City; directing and being directed by actors' bodies; watching The DEF Comedy Jam; and, in the form of an interview, some final reflections about working with performance for many years.
