Download or read book Mountain Path written by Harriette Simpson Arnow and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2012-07-01 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masterfully wrought and keenly observed, Mountain Path draws on Harriette Simpson Arnow’s experiences as a schoolteacher in downtrodden Pulaski County, Kentucky, deep in the heart of Appalachia, prior to WWII. Far from a quaint portrait of rural life, Arnow’s novel documents hardships, poverty, illiteracy, and struggles. She also recognizes a fragile cultural richness, one characterized by “those who like open fires, hounds, children, human talk and song instead of TV and radio, the wisdom of the old who had seen all of life from birth to death,” and which has since been eroded by the advent of highways and industry. In Mountain Path, Arnow exquisitely captures the voices, faces, and ways of a people she cared for deeply, and who evoked in her a deep respect and admiration.

Book In the Shadow of the Mountain

Download or read book In the Shadow of the Mountain written by Silvia Vasquez-Lavado and published by Henry Holt and Company. This book was released on 2022-02-01 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “In climbing the Seven Summits, Silvia Vasquez-Lavado did nothing less than take back her own life—one brave step at a time. She will inspire untold numbers of souls with this story, for her victory is a win on behalf of all of us.”—Elizabeth Gilbert Endless ice. Thin air. The threat of dropping into nothingness thousands of feet below. This is the climb Silvia Vasquez-Lavado braves in her page-turning, pulse-raising memoir chronicling her journey to Mount Everest. A Latina hero in the elite macho tech world of Silicon Valley, privately, she was hanging by a thread. Deep in the throes of alcoholism, hiding her sexuality from her family, and repressing the abuse she’d suffered as a child, she started climbing. Something about the brute force required for the ascent—the risk and spirit and sheer size of the mountains and death’s close proximity—woke her up. She then took her biggest pain as a survivor to the biggest mountain: Everest. “The Mother of the World,” as it’s known in Nepal, allows few to reach her summit, but Silvia didn’t go alone. She gathered a group of young female survivors and led them to base camp alongside her. It was never easy. At times hair-raising, nerve-racking, and always challenging, Silvia remembers the acute anxiety of leading a group of novice climbers to Everest’s base, all the while coping with her own nerves of summiting. But, there were also moments of peace, joy, and healing with the strength of her fellow survivors and community propelling her forward. In the Shadow of the Mountain is a remarkable story of heroism, one which awakens in all of us a lust for adventure, an appetite for risk, and faith in our own resilience.

Book excerpt: Author's Biography:Hi, my name is Saeed Gomez. I used to be possessed. I went through a horrendous time dealing with my struggles. I now know today that by obeying God and staying in his word constantly can make me conquer every difficulty I have, used to have, or am bound to have. I have received a spirit of conquering, still I am human but, I've realized that I would never have gotten this far with my own strength but with the amazing help of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. I've climbed mountains I'd thought I never pass through. And I am still passing through mountains I've never encountered before. I've come to realize that God, the church, and Jesus Christ have been my greatest help, along with the Holy Spirit, to have ever come across in my life. Everyday I witness too many miracles with myself and others to count. I am a walking miracle. Everyday I am faced with challenges I've never encountered and am striving for success. I have grown to be a pillar in the church of Jesus Christ. I am free from the law of sin, though I still struggle with my sin, I am free to say sin doesn't govern over me. I am growing with the word and having an honest faithful and obedient relationship with my God. I am growing along with the church of Jesus Christ. I am in the learning process like many before and after me. I made this project because I was afraid to lose everything that helped me to get to the point I've reached. I am still learning and will keep learning until God decides when it ends. I wanted to compile this project to show the world the blessings I've reached spiritually from keep moving forward with my life despite difficulties. If I've reached such blessings spiritually just from keep going ahead. I wish the same for all who read this and choose to go through their path in life. I wish the very best to my readers and with this I finish. Our God is the God of miracles, and through his son Jesus Christ we can do all things. May this essay benefit you as much as it has benefitted me and always remember John 14:12 "Verily, Verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do he do also; and greater works that these shall he do; because I go unto my father."
