Book The Secret of Progress Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Secret of Progress Classic Reprint written by W. Cunningham and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2016-10-16 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Janet's Home Yes, I heard my mother say, you are quite right I am very uneasy about the way in which Janet's teeth are coming. If she had had the best teeth in the world, her mouth would still have looked too large. As it is, I dread to think how she will look. Oh, perhaps her teeth will improve, I heard good natured Mrs. Wilton answer. Janet is just now at an ugly age one cannot, at nine years old, say how a girl will look when she is grown up. There was a pause, and then my mother sighed. Oh, my dear Mrs. Wilton, I know quite well how Janet will look when she is grown up. I am not one of those mothers who cannot see their children's imperfections my anxiety makes me keen-sighted. I see clearly enough that Janet can never be otherwise than very plain she has not one good feature in her fape except her-eyes, and her complexion is hopeless. You call it so, because your other children have such beautiful complexions. How exquisitely fair Ernestine is! How lovely she promises to be l - and Charlie, I do think. Is the handsomest boy I ever saw in my life. Charlie is very well, and Ernestine will, I suppose, be pretty that makes me the more sorry about Janet. When there are only two sisters, it is a pity they should be so nu like. I shall never know how to dress them. Book Adventures in Bookbinding

Download or read book Adventures in Bookbinding written by Jeannine Stein and published by Quarry Books. This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each project in this book combines bookbinding with a specific craft such as quilting, jewelry making, or polymer clay, and offer levels of expertise: basic, novice, and expert. Illustrated step-by-step instructions and photographs demonstrate how to construct the cover pages, and a unique binding technique, easy enough for a beginner to master. Each project also features two other versions with the same binding geared to those with more or less experience. The novice version is for those who have no knowledge of the craft and want shortcuts, but love the look. For the quilter's book, for example, vintage quilt pieces become the covers so all that's needing in the binding. Or if you're interested in wool felting use an old sweater. This offers great opportunities for upcycling. The expert version is for those who have a great deal of knowledge and proficiency of a certain craft - the master art quilter, for example. For this version, an expert guest artist has created the cover and the author has created the binding. This offers yet another creative opportunity - the collaborative project. Since crafters often get involved with round-robins and other shared endeavors, this will show them yet another way to combine their skills. No other craft book offers the possibilities and challenges that Adventures in Bookbinding does. Readers will return to it again and again to find inspiration and ideas.

Book Shut Your Mouth

Download or read book Shut Your Mouth written by George Catlin and published by . This book was released on 1869 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Catlin discusses how closing one's mouth during sleep and day to day will foster improvement in mental and physical condition. This edition contains all of the original illustrations the author made. Walking among and studying various Native American tribes in the 19th century, the author noticed that many of the elders possessed a serene and well-preserved appearance. The young members of the tribe seemed especially healthy, with an innate resistance to certain illnesses and congenital conditions. Seeing the tribe's members sleeping, he noted that they all did so with closed mouths. Catlin pondered whether this habit contributed to the physical vigor of the people, and investigated further. After venturing back to the towns of the Midwest, he attests to witnessing how terrible many people who had practiced mouth breathing throughout life appeared, and became deeply opposed to its practice. This book details how children and young people can be encouraged against mouth breathing, and notes how different the facial countenance appears between mouth breathing people and nose breathers. Today, the notion that mouth breathing promotes physical ugliness or decrepitude is wholly disavowed as an eccentric idea with no basis in fact. However, sleep researchers have demonstrated that breathing with the mouth open while asleep can result in more snoring and thus a lower quality of sleep and therefore health. Overall, one could venture that Catlin's ideas possess a certain merit, even if his book is an exaggeration. Although primarily known today as a painter and traveller who became an emissary of sorts to the Plains tribes, George Catlin was also an enthusiastic if occasional writer. He admired the Native American peoples for their traditions and distinctive appearance, and took to painting them - his marked talent led to their respect for his gifts, and they duly welcomed him with friendship.

Book The Fireplace in the Home Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Fireplace in the Home Classic Reprint written by Margaret Greenleaf and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fireplace in the Home It is a fact generally conceded by the architect, the decorator, and the intelligent layman, that there is no architectural feature of a room of more superlative importance to its finished effect than the mantel. Where the right mantel is in its correct setting, the artistic values and livable qualities of the room in which it stands are more than doubled; also the reverse is true in the same ratio where the mantel is out of harmony with, and unsuited to, its surroundings - therefore, it behooves the home maker to consider long and carefully the designs submitted for his hall, his living-room, his dining-room, and the bed-chambers of his house. In buying and placing a piece of furniture one has always the opportunity to remove it if it proves unsuited to its surround ings, and unattractive in itself, but in the mantel once placed one has a per manent and most conspicuous feature for the room, which must be retained and enjoyed - or endured. Fortunate ly, it is generally possible to-day to see in the showrooms of the dealer the actual mantel ready to set in place. This is a great help to those who, from drawings alone, are unable to see in the mind's eye the complete effect, for in houses architecturally correct, the mantel is essentially a veryimportant part of the trim and furnish ings.
