Book The Moral Spiritual Crisis in Education

Download or read book The Moral Spiritual Crisis in Education written by David E. Purpel and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1989 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purpel . . . ably complements the economic and political focus of critical pedagogy by shedding new light on spiritual and moral dimensions of public discourse. His book is a welcome addition to the literature in that it articulately scrutinizes the interface of culture and education and attendant trivialization of school reform. . . . While his marvelous book offers only several examples of just schools, it enormously enriches a still unfinished dialectic. Choice Purpel's research is exhaustive, his writing elegant, and his suggestions for students and teachers impressive. The Book Reader

Book Reflections on The Moral Spiritual Crisis in Education

Download or read book Reflections on The Moral Spiritual Crisis in Education written by David E. Purpel and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2004 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes a sharply critical view of contemporary society with a searing indictment of our morally and intellectually bankrupt educational system. Uniquely, the book contains both the original version of David Purpel's highly influential Moral and Spiritual Crisis in Education, first published in 1989, as well as an updated critique of that work - reflections from our current times of growing despair about the directions of education and the nation. Reflections on the Moral and Spiritual Crisis in Education focuses on the possibility - and necessity - of generating hope through the redemptive and energizing power of the human spirit.

Book Left Behind The Public Education Crisis in the United States

Download or read book Left Behind The Public Education Crisis in the United States written by Paul L. Jalbert and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the harmful influences that the cultural, social, economic, political and ideological dimensions, in current ‘American’ society, have upon the delivery of elementary, secondary and university education. It examines the effects of poverty, funding at the local, state and federal levels and racial and ethnic discrimination. Arguing against the continuation of standardized testing—an ill-conceived methodology to measure the performance of children—the author advocates more one-on-one teaching and evaluation. He charges that students’ rights to education are not respected and, in elementary and high school, receive little in the way of instruction that translates into life skills and proposes what some of those skills should be. A critique of the extreme ethnocentric approach to education in the United States, Left Behind advocates strong instruction in the Humanities and foreign languages and the establishment of education abroad as a permanent program in high school and university. The author identifies Capitalism as the basic influence that, in the form of employing ‘business model’ constructs, has slowly transformed our children into obedient consumers. Physical Education has waned and become a major contributor to adolescent obesity. Seeking to replace children’s complacency with critical thinking instruction, the author demonstrates how the corporate mass media occupy their minds. He also fears the erosion of the profession of teaching by an ‘online’ instruction frenzy. The book explores the possibilities for a viable nation-wide education institution, in which decision-making is in the hands of teachers, parents and education experts, instead of politicians and business people. The remedies that could be taken up by ordinary people are accessible at the commonsense level; what prevents change are the lack of political will and economic greed, bolstered by the ideological power of the mass media.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has become clear o those paying attention that America is in a downward spiral of moral decay and is spinning out of control. It is time to wake up the uninformed and to expose the causes of this moral decline. The future of America is at stake, and, unfortunately, the minds of America’s youth are the battleground. In Crisis in Our Classrooms: The Lies We Tell Our Children, author, teacher, father, and retired US Navy chief petty officer Jim Murphy presents a no-holds-barred rebuttal of America’s secular education system, especially of the two main culprits—evolution (with no mention of Creation) and sex education. Murphy begins by exploring the untruths being spread and the methods of control used by secular institutions, but he also shows how everyone has played a part in allowing these large and entrenched special interests to take control. Through lessons designed for group or individual study, Crisis in Our Classrooms offers hope and ammunition for the struggle and the change that needs to happen as America moves forward. This change needs to happen now, before it’s too late—parents, students, and all concerned citizens should stand united and show the educational system and historians of America that we are still accountable to a higher purpose and meaning beyond ourselves. We are still responsible for upholding the values and principles that alone can save America and her children.

Book Crisis in the Classroom

Download or read book Crisis in the Classroom written by Charles E. Silberman and published by Vintage. This book was released on 1971 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this bold new book, the result of a three-and-a-half-year study commissioned by the Carnegie Corporation of New York, Charles E. Silberman examines the problems that beset American education with the same intelligence, compassion, and uncompromising honesty that marked his award-winning best seller Crisis in Black and White." "Anyone who is concerned with the nation's public schools and with its colleges and universities will be disturbed by the picture of current practice which Mr. Silberman paints in vivid and painful detail. Many will agree with his insistence that it is not enough merely to ask, "How can we bring the worst institutions up to the level of the best?"--For all too often, the best is simply not good enough."--Jacket.
