Book excerpt: This study analyzed school principals and schools counselors use of collaboration in school settings. It compared school counselors and school principals' perception of the use of collaboration to promote student academic achievement. It further explored the factors perceived as promoting and impeding collaboration as well as persons with whom the school counselors and school principals collaborated. The subjects' reasons for collaboration were noted and their conceptual understanding and stated framework of collaboration were compared with the definition of collaboration as articulated in current research literature. Significant similarities of conceptual understanding and the framework for collaboration among the sampled population of school counselors and principals were found. Both school counselors and principals sampled in the study identified collaboration as "two or more parties working together toward a common goal to plan and implement a strategy for a problem or issue for the benefit of students." Their implementation of this definition did correlate with the relevant professional literature (American School Counselor Association 1998; Welch and Tulbert 2000). They also reported that school counselors and school principals do not collaborate with each other on a significant level. They ranked school social workers, school psychologists, and community agencies low among persons with whom they collaborated. Both sets of practitioners confirmed academic advisement and scheduling as being the primary reasons for collaboration, with issues of discipline being ranked second.

Rather than redressing the issues of school discipline disproportionality overall, this book examines the existence of school on student groups who, according to research and national and state reports, are afflicted the most: African American, Latinx, Native American, and LGBTQ+ population. A confluence of these identities can exacerbate such disproportionality, which based on the literature decreases the academic growth of students. Book excerpt: Research reveals that disciplinary alternative education programs (DAEPs) are growing at an alarming rate. What are schools doing to ensure success for those students who are placed in a DAEP? In this descriptive qualitative research study, I examined how DAEPs can operate at a more effective level in order to provide a restorative environment, resulting in a decreased recidivism rate for troubled youth. In order to achieve this overall objective, the following research questions framed this study RQ1: What are the qualities in a disciplinary alternative education program setting that lead to either success or failure of a DAEP program? RQ2: Why do students continue to commit offenses which lead to multiple assignments in a disciplinary alternative education program? RQ3: How does a disciplinary alternative education program provide a restorative environment for troubled youth in order to decrease recidivism? RQ4: What resources are available to reduce the amount of repeat student assignments to DAEP? Participants were 12 North Texas secondary school students with multiple assignments to DAEPs and 12 North Texas secondary counselors who provide emotional and behavioral supports to these students. The findings indicate there is a high need for the implementation of transitional supports, a high need for consistent and targeted counselor support and resources, a high need to change student behavior, a high need to build positive relationships, and a high need to address the environmental (social) factors that influence behavior.

Book excerpt: Current research is limited concerning the alignment of the perceived role of high school counselors among stakeholders. This quantitative methods study found both convergent and divergent themes surrounding high school counselors' roles and how others perceive their roles. Counselor job descriptions were not well aligned with American School Counselor Association recommendations. Differences between grades and school as well as gender and ethnic differences were found. Counselors adapted to requirements of the local site and culture, which tended to drive the importance of certain duties over others. Recommendations were made for clearer role definition from professional organizations and identification of stakeholder perceptions that would allow counselors to develop more effective relationships and meet needs for counseling services within stakeholder expectations as well as counselor-identified need areas. Factor analysis found seven latent variables that counselors seem to focus on according to the importance ratings of stakeholders were: 1) College, career, and class planning; 2) School programs and communication; 3) Student personal issues; 4) Working with staff; 5) Student learning; 6) Technician, teaching, and supervision; and 7) Rules, regulations, and discipline. Supporting research includes an analysis of district and school site job descriptions; differences in overall group perceptions of students, parents, teachers, and counselors; and an analysis of demographic differences in the interpretation of counselors' roles. Results also include a convergence of the lowest mean difference in areas where the professional identity of high school counselors align with serving the academic needs of students to be best prepared for postsecondary experiences such as employment and/or acceptance to college. A clearer consensus of the role of counselors, one that aligns with recommendations from a counselors' professional organizations, such as the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), and with job descriptions by school boards, may allow counselors to better serve students, parents, and teachers. By identifying the stakeholder perceptions on the frequency and importance of counselor roles, high school counseling teams can move towards such an alignment in order to be more effective in providing counseling services.
