Book The Perceptions of Saudi Arabia Higher Educational Leaders on Servant Leadership The Use of Authority and Power

Download or read book The Perceptions of Saudi Arabia Higher Educational Leaders on Servant Leadership The Use of Authority and Power written by Areej Abdullah Shafai and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the rapid changes occurring in Saudi Arabia toward achieving Saudi's 2030 vision, more opportunities and developments will emerge in education and leadership, as one of the main orientations of the vision. The Ministry of Higher Education in Saudi Arabia seeks to raise the quality of higher education and its features to provide outputs that contribute to serving the community and economic development. Responding to the requirements of the labor market, the Ministry of Higher Education is seeking to make higher education in Saudi Arabia competitive with higher education systems in other developed countries. Thus, improving leadership in higher education institutions has become more essential than ever. This study explored the perceptions of higher education leaders on servant leadership as a leadership style. It also aimed to define their practices of authority and power as a significant pillar of servant leadership. A qualitative method was used to collect and analyze the data for this study. Ten department chairs from various regions of Saudi Arabia were interviewed to gain their perspectives and stories regarding their practice of servant leadership. The interviews were digitally recorded and transcribed, then coded and analyzed with Dedoose web-based qualitative data-analysis software. The major findings from this study emerged around the five main themes that answered the five research questions: experience of leadership, characteristics of servant leadership, service, authority and power, and challenges of applying servant leadership in Saudi Arabia. One major finding of this study was that Saudi higher education leaders lack leadership education and training. They were unfamiliar with various leadership styles in general, and the term servant leadership in particular. Findings also demonstrated a tight link between servant leadership and Islamic principles, as Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) embraced the leadership approach that puts people and their needs as a top priority. The findings clearly indicated that Saudi higher education leaders use formal authority and still perceive formal authority as a major controlling element. Formal authority and moral authority complement each other. More importantly, servant leadership is an appropriate method of leadership to be applied in higher education institutions in Saudi Arabia. However, shifting from a traditional style of leadership that relies on authority to servant leadership needs to be gradual to reduce potential risks as a result of this significant transition.

This contributed volume encompasses research and perspectives from the global south, including Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and South America. In doing so, this collection fills a gap in existing literature to give a broader view of the topic. Divided by geographic territory into three sections, the book combines original research, case studies and interviews as well as comparative studies. Chapters cover a wide range of emerging issues including gender and work-life balance; the role of culture; men and household work and work and family balance, to name a few. Crucially, the book offers critical perspectives and understanding of work-life interface/balance/conflict as a collection of conceptual, theoretical, and empirical studies that draws on qualitative and mixed methodologies. Bringing a unique contribution to the field, this book is a useful resource for students, academics, managers and policy makers.

Book Teaching and Learning in Saudi Arabia

Download or read book Teaching and Learning in Saudi Arabia written by Amani K Hamdan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saudi Arabia is witnessing unprecedented progress in the field of higher education. Even though the country opened its first university in 1957, so far there seems to be little English scholarly writing about Saudi education in general and higher education in particular. The current expansion of Saudi Arabia’s higher-education system has put a spotlight on this serious gap in the international literature. This book helps to fill this lacuna through the work of 16 scholars who have contributed to the development of the Saudi education system. In so doing, the book reveals areas where more research is required and thus provides a useful starting point for education scholars. This anthology is unique in that it is the first to offer a comprehensive perspective on the current knowledge base pertaining to Saudi higher education as well as to the ongoing efforts to introduce reforms.

Book A Study of Servant Leadership and Student Engagement Among Academic Leaders and Faculty

Download or read book A Study of Servant Leadership and Student Engagement Among Academic Leaders and Faculty written by Stephen L. Lentoror and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stimulus for this study sprung from reflections on good Biblical leadership needed in higher education today - leadership that empowers students to achieve their educational goals and succeed in life. This motivation led to the consideration of two presently important domains in higher education: servant leadership and student engagement. -- This study sought to provide a response to three research questions by looking at related empirical research (in universities, colleges and organizations), and relevant Biblical and theological material: 1) What elements characterize the practice of servant leadership and student engagement among academic leaders and faculty? 2) What is the nature of Biblical servant leadership as modelled and taught by Jesus Christ. 3) What are the implications of the study for academic leaders and faculty in Christian higher education institutions in Kenya? The reviewed literature in chapter two showed that the practice of servant leadership among academic leaders and faculty does the following: it promotes job satisfaction among staff, it boosts the emotional health of an institution, it breeds faculty development, it enriches student learning, and facilitates healing and wholeness among students. On the other hand, the practice of servant leadership among academic leaders and faculty helps to enhance of deep learning among students, raising awareness of students learning difficulties, and integrating students' lives with campus community life. In chapter three, the nature of Biblical servant leadership as modelled and taught by Jesus Christ, was characterized by being a "servant" and a "slave", implying a humble spirit focused on serving others. Jesus Christ himself was the ultimate model of servant leadership and the highest model of an engaging teacher of all time who utilized teachable moments, challenged the students' minds, and moved from surface teaching (involving facts and opinions), to deep teaching (involving heart convictions) . Christian academic leaders and faculty must display a servant attitude towards students entrusted to them. -- The grand implication of the study is for institutional leadership and faculty to develop and nurture a campus environment based on mutual service to one another -- an environment where students are cared for, loved ('giving them what they need, even if it is not what they want'), and freely engage in the most productive learning activities and experiences (in and outside of the classroom) in order to thrive emotionally, academically, and socially. Recommendations for further study include: 1) conducting a mixed method to determine the relationship between servant leadership and student engagement among academic leaders and faculty. 2) Conducting a study that probes into the relationship between emotional healing and positive learning outcomes among students in colleges/universities.

Book Perceptions of Power

Download or read book Perceptions of Power written by Thomas Clarke Castner and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative case study was to uncover and examine the perceptions of power of internal and external formal leaders of one regional educational agency. Through surveys and semi-structured interviews, this researcher asked participants to describe what power is, how it works, and how it works best. Meeting observations were used to triangulate participant power-wielding actions with their power-associated philosophies and observations. Out of the 18 total participants, nine were female and nine were male. The participants averaged 27.2 total years in their professions, with an average of 16.3 years in formal leadership positions. Seven participants held Doctoral degrees, five held Master's degrees, five held Bachelor's degrees, and one participant was non-degree. Participant descriptions of the meanings, manifestations, and ideals of power often intertwined, so that there were shared themes across all three research questions. Overall, the participants described power as the ability to effectively get organizational goals accomplished through (a) balancing counter forces, (b) building relationships, (c) knowing one's self and others, (d) leading through example, (e) developing an organizational mission, (f) learning from failure, (g) celebrating success, (h) sharing power, and (i) knowing the organizational culture. Hierarchy or the chain of command was described by the participants in both negative and positive terms as an undeniable, sometimes necessary, part of the framework of power in their educational agency. Hierarchy was described positively by a majority of the participants as an important part of power, especially in large, complicated organizations, where knowing who is "in charge" often helps to simplify the workings of power. On the other hand, some participants cautioned against the "layers" that can be built up in a hierarchical organization, which can lead to leaders being insulated from workers "in the trenches". The rich responses of the participants as related to the meanings, manifestations, and ideals of power reinforced the recommendations of those researchers cited in the review of literature who promoted further study of leader perceptions of power and how those perceptions contribute to their styles of leadership and the structures of power in their educational agency.
