Book Georgia Superintendents Perceptions of the Minority Achievement Gap

Download or read book Georgia Superintendents Perceptions of the Minority Achievement Gap written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author's abstract: The purpose of this study is to examine Georgia superintendents perceptions of both the possible causes of and proposed remedies for closing the Minority Achievement Gap (MAG). Using a survey instrument developed by the author, the perceptions of Georgia public school superintendents are explored. This study codifies this information so that it is available for consideration by all superintendents interested in becoming more effective leaders and in closing the MAG. As chief executive officers of school districts who play crucial roles in the education of Americas children, superintendents play a major role in addressing all aspects of the MAG, yet little research on their perceptions exists. Most empirical studies of the MAG do not reflect superintendents voices. In particular, no research directly focuses on superintendents perceptions of the possible causes of and proposed remedies for closing the MAG. Superintendents are held accountable for the performance of their schools under NCLB, and they struggle to improve education and close the MAG; however, research studies addressing their perceptions that may help them achieve these goals are absent. Therefore, a need exists for a study to examine Georgia superintendents perceptions of the possible causes of and proposed remedies for closing the MAG. Analysis of the survey responses shows that the superintendents view lack of parental involvement, peer pressure, low SES, and low teacher expectations as possible causes of the MAG. Likewise, they view increased parental involvement, better classroom instruction, preschool/early learning, increased teacher expectations, and higher SES as possible remedies for closing the MAG. However, the superintendents responses do not lead to any conclusions about the extent of racial differences in their perceptions, and their responses point to no significant difference between genders on their perceptions. The significant findings from this study reveal that years of experience are associated with Georgia superintendents perceptions of two possible causes of the MAG, lack of parental involvement and low SES.

Book Georgia Female School Superintendents

Download or read book Georgia Female School Superintendents written by Juliann Payne Alligood and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author's abstract: The researcher's purpose in this study was to describe the perception of isolation among Georgia female school superintendents. A qualitative method was used to conduct the study. The research instrument used in conducting the study was comprised of 13 open-ended interview questions which were designed to elicit responses to the research question and subquestions. The researcher interviewed ten Georgia female school superintendents concerning their positions as female school leaders. The researcher recorded the interviews with audio tapes, had tapes transcribed by a trained transciptionist, and coded the transcripts for recurring themes and patterns. To validate her findings, the researcher enlisted the assistance of methodologist, Dr. Michael D. Richardson, who also coded transcripts. The ten Georgia female school superintendents were chosen through convenience sampling. Of the participants, 8 were Caucasian and 2 were African American. After determining the participants of the study, the researcher contacted the superintendents via telephone and e-mail to determine a convenient meeting place, date, and time. The researcher assured the superintendents that their identity would remain confidential; therefore, each superintendent was given a fictitious name, and the participants' responses were presented with the assigned name. In this study the researcher explored the superintendents' backgrounds, perceptions of isolation related to the superintendency, and the strategies that they sued to cope with isolation. All Georgia female school superintendents participating in the study acknowledged, at minimum, a modicum amount of isolation related to their positions.

Book Defining Hybrid Homeschools in America

Download or read book Defining Hybrid Homeschools in America written by Eric Wearne and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-10-28 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Defining Hybrid Homeschools in America: Little Platoons explores the idea of hybrid homeschools, where students attend a formal school setting for part of the week and are homeschooled the rest of the week. Eric Wearne observes that school choice in America typically comes in two forms: programs set up for disadvantaged students, and the more common form of choice that wealthy parents can exercise—paying private tuition or moving to a more desirable school district. While disadvantaged families in many places and wealthy families everywhere can exercise choice when it comes to schooling, a sizeable group typically gets left out of those options—the large number of families who are too wealthy to access state or local programs, but not wealthy enough to pay for private schooling or moving expenses. Wearne argues that this is a long-term weakness for school choice in America; the middle class is generally a well-off demographic, but is almost completely unserved when it comes to this large aspect of their children’s lives. However, one low-cost option has arisen to address this niche: hybrid home schools. Wearne cites existing research to argue for this model’s efficacy for the middle class as a strong example of a healthy civil society and examines how policy definitions are breaking down and evolving in education as we challenge the existing definitions of schooling.

Book excerpt: From left to right on the political spectrum, there is at least one note of agreement: the nation's school system has not delivered universal quality education. Accordingly, debate has raged over how to rectify this situation. Should the government increase funding, encourage privatisation, some of both? Another option, though, has emerged and is seemingly gaining popularity -- home schooling. Citing both substandard education and displeasure with school environments and curricula, many parents have decided to teach their own children. Supporters say it is well within their rights to raise their children as they see fit and that at-home learning is superior to the public system. Detractors claim that home-schooled children are deprived of social interaction and the broad-based education provided by the system. Neither side wants to cede ground, making the issue of home schooling an integral part of a wider national debate on education. In this book, the specific topic of home schooling is presented from all relevant sides to give a complete picture of the present status of the issue and its potential for future resolution. Following this overview is a thorough and carefully selected bibliography of literature about home schooling from all viewpoints. Easy access to his important resource is then provided via author, title, and subject indexes.
