Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Perception of Number The experiments upon which this work is based were begun in Harvard University and later were carried on in the laboratory of Columbia University. Part of the results have already been published in the Harvard Psychological Studies, Volume I. It is my purpose in this paper to report some additional experiments and give a more extended theoretical discussion of the questions involved. The experiments already published had reference entirely to the perception of number through touch. In this report I shall give a brief summary of such of those results as may be useful in the discussion, add a few more from the same field, and then report some experiments on the sense of sight which were intended to throw light on the same general problem. The investigation began as a study in the fusion of touch sensations when more than two contacts were possible. I had no very definite idea of what 'fusion meant, and I am even yet unable to find in psychological literature a satisfactory definition or explanation of it. In the absence of uniform usage or common understanding of the term I shall state my own views in regard to fusion in general, in order to make perfectly clear what I mean when I deny that there is fusion of touch sensations when two objects resting near together on the akin are perceived as one object. Inasmuch as the attitude of the subject plays so important a role in all of the experiments, it will be necessary also to devote a few paragraphs to the relation of the motor to the sensory elements of consciousness. The conclusions of other experimenters with whom I do not agree also suggest some remarks on that subject. While many animal species communicate and exchange information using sound, humans are unique in the complexity of the information that can be conveyed using speech, and in the range of ideas, thoughts and emotions that can be expressed. Despite the importance of speech communication for the entire structure of human society, there are many aspects of this process that are not fully understood. One problem is that research on speech and language is typically carried out by different groups of scientists working on separate aspects of the underlying functional and neural systems. On the one hand, research from an auditory perspective focuses on the acoustical properties of speech sounds, their representation in the auditory system, and how that representation is used to extract phonetic information. On the other hand, research from psycholinguistic perspectives examines the processes by which representations of meaning are extracted from the acoustic-phonetic sequence, and how these are linked to the construction of higher-level linguistic interpretation in terms of sentences and discourse. Till now, there has been relatively little interaction between speech researchers from these two groups, in spite of a dramatic expansion in recent years of research into the neural bases of auditory and linguistic functions. This book bridges the gap between these two lines of research, recognising that both have the same aims in understanding how the motor gestures of a speaker are transformed to sounds and how those are mapped onto meaning in the comprehension of spoken language.
