Book excerpt: William Faulkner said he wrote about the human heart in conflict with itself, and set most of his greatest work in that "postage stamp of native soil" in Mississippi, which like the human heart is in conflict with itself. "David Sansing, in typical form, utilizes his remarkable talent as a Southern historian to highlight an amazing portrait of the 'Other Mississippi' - one in which the closed society of the past is only part of the story of our state. In captivating style, David eloquently reminds us all of the common bonds that bind us, as it gives a candid, yet hopeful view of Mississippi's continuing struggles - ones in which we 'cannot rewrite the past but can chart our own future'." William Winter Governor, Mississippi (1980-1984)

Book Mississippi s Uncovered Glory

Download or read book Mississippi s Uncovered Glory written by Jerome Gentry and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2008-06-18 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are several inspirations and reasons why I decided to write this book. My daughters, Deanna and Mia were two of those inspirations. I was in deep thought one day on how my daughters knew very little of my life growing up and almost nothing of their uncle (Ricky), my deceased brother. Therefore, I decided to tell my story in book form. This book gives you a look inside of my soul of dealing with the lost of my only sibling. This book is also about growing up in Mississippi in the mid 1960’s and the 1970’s. The hope in writing this book is to help dispel any myths about life in Mississippi during those times. Along the way I will resurrect a high school football team from the mid 1970’s that the world may not have known existed by way of its unique assembly. This high school football team reached a height in Mississippi high school football that had never been achieved before. What was more amazing is this team was led by two brothers. One was an undersized defensive lineman who was described by his head coach as “the smallest nose guard in the world at 5’6” 144 pound”. I was that nose guard and the offensive catalyst for this team was my brother, a 6’1” 212 pound devastating and powerful all-American running back.

Book Mississippi Government and Politics

Download or read book Mississippi Government and Politics written by Dale Krane and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors of Mississippi Government and Politics go beyond the stereotyped view of the Magnolia State to consider the dramatic social, economic, and political changes taking place there in recent years. Yet the past is inextricably bound up with the present, as Dale Krane and Stephen D. Shaffer make clear in developing their central theme: the ongoing clash in Mississippi between traditionalists intent on preserving the status quo and progressives who have grown up with the civil rights movement. Based in part on public opinion polls measuring the attitudes of Mississippians over a decade, Mississippi Government and Politics presents a vivid social history and analysis of the state's executive, legislative, and judicial branches. Krane and Shaffer have contributed chapters on the culture of Mississippi, the origins and evolution of its ruling class, and efforts to modernize the economy and to bring more blacks and poor whites into the power structure. Krane writes about the struggle over public policy, or "who gets what, " and the highly ambivalent attitude of Mississippians toward the federal government. Shaffer addresses the shifting allegiances of political parties in the state and the role of interest groups in effecting change. The contributors include leading political scientists and public administrators. Tip H. Allen, Jr., looks at the century-old, much-amended constitution, and Douglas G. Feig considers the dominance of the legislature and the winds of change blowing through it. Thomas H. Handy describes the traditionally weak governorship. Diane E. Wall threads her way through the antiquated judicial system. Edward J. Clynch sizes up tax Policy, and Gerald Gabris delves intothe dynamics of local government. The result is the most comprehensive and authoritative book on Mississippi political culture in many years.

Book Three Mississippi

Download or read book Three Mississippi written by Hal Kitchings and published by CrossBooks Publishing. This book was released on 2013-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the wake of a city council decision to rename three parks that honored the Confederate side of the Civil War, Memphis Mayor A. C. Wharton made an interesting statement. “My personal philosophy is that we always need more history,” he said. “You don’t correct history by taking stuff out of it; you correct it by putting more into it.” Native Mississippian Hal Kitchings “puts more into it” in Three Mississippi, a deeply honest look at racial prejudice in the Deep South of the 1960s from a man who witnessed it firsthand. Kitchings, a third-generation pastor, offers a unique perspective on racial segregation, prejudice, equality, and integration as he confronts not only Mississippi’s sins, but his own in an effort to add to the historical narrative. Half memoir and half commentary, Three Mississippi is divided into three sections and stretches from the height of integration in the 1960s to Kitchings’s current efforts to bridge the gap between black and white. He compares the reconciliation of the South with its racial history to a sinner reconciling with God through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. In so doing, he definitively shows how true reconciliation is achievable, regardless of skin color or socio-economic background. Using a witty, conversational style, Kitchings tackles Mississippi’s heated past head on in a journey you won’t forget.

Book In a Madhouse s Din

Download or read book In a Madhouse s Din written by Susan M. Weill and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2002-03-30 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mississippi is a unique case study as a result of its long-standing defiance of federal civil rights legislation and the fact that nearly half its population was black and relegated to second-class citizenship. According to the vast majority of Mississippi daily press editorials examined between 1948 and 1968, the notion that blacks and whites were equal as races of people was a concept that remained unacceptable and inconceivable. While the daily press certainly did not advocate desegregation, in contrast to what many media critics have reported about the Southern press promoting violence to suppress civil rights activity, Mississippi daily newspapers never encouraged or condoned violence during the time periods under evaluation. Weill places coverage of these important events within a historical context, shedding new light on media opinion in the state most resistant to the precepts of the civil rights movement. This is the first comprehensive examination of civil rights coverage and white supremacist rhetoric in the Mississippi daily press during five key events: the 1948 Dixiecrat protest of the national Democratic platform; the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision to desegregate public schools in 1954; the court-ordered desegregation of Ole Miss in 1962; Freedom Summer in 1964; and the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., in 1968. From nearly 5,000 issues of Mississippi daily newspapers, more than 1,000 editorials and 7,000 news articles are documented in this volume.
