This book was released on 2014 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Foundations of Excellence in the First Year of College Project was formed in 2002 by the Policy Center on the First Year of College for the purpose of assisting institutions of higher education create a first-year experience for their students that is meaningful and can lead to an increase in retention rates for the institutions. To date, no independent research has been completed to examine the impact the Foundations of Excellence in the First Year of College Project has had on an institution of higher education's first-year student's retention. The focus of this study is to determine the factors that impact an institution of higher education's retention of first-year students after it participates in the Foundations of Excellence in the First Year of College Project. Specifically, I examined the relationships between the Foundation of Excellence in the First Year of College Project's nine (9) Foundational Dimensions and their perceived impact on a student's first-year college experience as evidenced by retention. Furthermore, I tested the hypothesis that institutions of higher education on average experienced change in their reported retention over the amount of time they participated in the Foundations of Excellence Project. I utilized a mixed method, ex-post facto research design to inquire if statistical relationships exist between the nine (9) Foundational Dimensions in the Foundations of Excellence in the First Year of College Project and institutions of higher education's retention rates from the first-year to the second-year of college. My sample consists of 51 subjects whose institutions of higher education participated in the Foundations of Excellence Project. I administered a survey containing questions that gathered information regarding the relationship between the nine (9) Foundational Dimensions of the Foundations of Excellence in the First Year of College Project and student retention from the first-year to the second-year of college. A repeated measures Analysis of Variance was applied to the retention data over time. All nine of the Foundational Dimensions in the Foundations of Excellence in the First Year of College Project were perceived as at least somewhat effective on each of the self-reported outcomes. The results show that a combination of the Project's Foundational Dimensions account for a small but significant portion of the overall variance in an institution's retention rates. The results also showed a variance in the rating of each of the Foundational Dimensions on their perceived effect to impact an institution's first-year experience. Lastly, the results showed that while some Foundational Dimensions were rated high on impacting an institution's first-year experience, a few of the Foundational Dimensions were not even mentioned.

This book was released on 2014-08-29 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What factors contribute to students' lasting success? Much research has explored the impact of the first year of college on student retention and success. With the new performance-based funding initiatives, institutional administrators are taking a laser-focused approach to aligning retention and success strategies to first-year student transition points. This volume enlightens the discussion and highlights new directions for assessment and research practices within the scope of the first year experience. Administrators, faculty, and data scientists provide a conceptual and analytical approach to investigating the first-year experience for entry-level and seasoned practitioners alike. The emerging research throughout this volume suggests that while many first-year programs and services have significant benefits across a number of success outcomes, these benefits may not be universal for all students. This volume: Examines sophisticated empirical models Provides critical assessment practices and implications. Examines the four-year college and the two-year institution, which is just as critical. This is the 161st volume of this Jossey-Bass quarterly report series. Timely and comprehensive, New Directions for Institutional Research provides planners and administrators in all types of academic institutions with guidelines in such areas as resource coordination, information analysis, program evaluation, and institutional management.

Author George Kuh presents data from the National Survey of Student Engagement about these practices and explains why they benefit all students, but also seem to benefit underserved students even more than their more advantaged peers. The report also presents data that show definitively that underserved students are the least likely students, on average, to have access to these practices.

Book The Struggle to Reform Our Colleges

Download or read book The Struggle to Reform Our Colleges written by Derek Bok and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2017-09-05 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why efforts to improve American higher educational attainment haven't worked, and where to go from here During the first decade of this century, many commentators predicted that American higher education was about to undergo major changes that would be brought about under the stimulus of online learning and other technological advances. Toward the end of the decade, the president of the United States declared that America would regain its historic lead in the education of its workforce within the next ten years through a huge increase in the number of students earning “quality” college degrees. Several years have elapsed since these pronouncements were made, yet the rate of progress has increased very little, if at all, in the number of college graduates or the nature and quality of the education they receive. In The Struggle to Reform Our Colleges, Derek Bok seeks to explain why so little change has occurred by analyzing the response of America’s colleges; the influence of students, employers, foundations, accrediting organizations, and government officials; and the impact of market forces and technological innovation. In the last part of the book, Bok identifies a number of initiatives that could improve the performance of colleges and universities. The final chapter examines the process of change itself and describes the strategy best calculated to quicken the pace of reform and enable colleges to meet the challenges that confront them.
