Book excerpt: The primary purpose of this quantitative study was to examine how student perceptions of the frequency of use and usefulness of instructional technology aligned with faculty perceptions of the same technologies in general education courses in a large community college. This study replicated the research conducted by Moseley (2010). This current study extended Moseley's research by including faculty member age as a research variable. The demographic of student and faculty member gender is examined as well. The findings of this study revealed that students perceived lesser usage of instructional technologies in the classroom than faculty members; students perceived instructional technolgy to be less useful in helping them learn than compared to faculty members; and that female faculty members, more than male faculty members, perceived that instructional technology was useful in helping students learn. -- Abstract.

Book excerpt: Educational institutions of all levels invest large amounts of time and resources into instructional technology, with the goal of enhancing the educational effectiveness of the learning environment. The decisions made by instructors and institutions regarding the implementation of technology are guided by perceptions of usefulness held by those who are in control. The primary objective of this mixed methods study was to examine the student and faculty perceptions of technology being used in general education courses at a community college. This study builds upon and challenges the assertions of writers such as Prensky (2001a, 2001b) and Tapscott (1998) who claim that a vast difference in technology perception exists between generational groups, resulting in a diminished usefulness of technology in instruction. In this study, data were gathered through student surveys and interviews, and through faculty surveys and interviews. Analysis of the data used Kendall's Tau test for correlation between various student and faculty variables in various groupings, and also typological analysis of the transcribed interview data. The analysis of the quantitative data revealed no relationship between age and perception of technology's usefulness. A positive relationship was found to exist between the perception of the frequency of technology use and the perception of technology's effectiveness, suggesting that both faculty members and students believed that the more technology is used, the more useful it is in instruction. The analysis of the qualitative data revealed that both faculty and students perceive technology to be useful, and that the most significant barriers to technology's usefulness include faulty hardware and software systems, lack of user support, and lack of training for faculty. The results of the study suggest that the differences in perception of technology between generations that are proposed by Prensky may not exist when comparing adults from the younger generation with adults from the older generation. Further, the study suggests that institutions continue to invest in instructional technology, with a focus on high levels of support and training for faculty, and more universal availability of specific technologies, including web access, in class video, and presentation software. Book excerpt: This report summarizes the results of the 1985 Higher Education Utilization Study (HEUS-85), which provides current estimates of the availability, use, and support of instructional telecommunications technologies--video, audio, and computers--in the nation's colleges and universities, and describes the availability and use patterns of these technologies in teacher preparation programs. The first of six major sections presents a general discussion of technology use in education and an overview of the study, which involved a survey by mail questionnaire with telephone follow-up interviews of individuals who were most knowledgeable about (1) instructional uses of video and audio technologies, (2) the instructional uses of computers, and (3) the institution's teacher preparation program (where applicable). Separate questionnaires for each of the three groups of respondents were sent to 2,830 public and private two- and four-year postsecondary collegiate institutions, 1,202 of which had teacher education programs. The second section provides a summary of the major findings based on responses from 85% of the video/audio group, 86% from the computer group, and 92% from the teacher education group. The third section considers the availability of instructional technologies and program materials as reported by the survey respondents. The use of technologies for instruction is discussed in the fourth section, and the fifth addresses questions about support for instructional technology, including funding, personnel, and consortia membership and services. The sixth section focuses on the availability and use patterns of video, audio, and computer technologies in teacher education programs. Appended materials include the three questionnaires; a description of the survey design and procedures; and a list of members of the Study Advisory Committee. (DJR)
