Book Campus Recreation and Retention in Higher Education

Download or read book Campus Recreation and Retention in Higher Education written by Christopher John Misiano and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Campus recreation facilities and programs provide various environments and opportunities outside of the classroom for students to socialize, participate in sports, improve their physical fitness, and learn new skills. Existing research has explored the relationship between participation in campus recreation and the social, academic, and physical impacts it has on the lives of students. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to determine if participation in various types of campus recreation held predictive significance regarding year-over-year retention of first year college students at a large, private university. The predictor variables were participation in club sports, intramural sports, outdoor recreation, student activities events, and usage of the on-campus fitness center. Archival data drawn from the university’s database of records provided a sample of 2,857 students for the 2017-2018 academic year, 2,780 students for the 2018-2019 academic year, and 2,742 students for the 2019-2020 academic year. Logistic regressions were conducted at the 95% confidence interval which produced results indicating statistical significance for the full model for all three years. Of the predictor variables, student activities participation displayed significance all three years, intramural sports participation was significant twice, and fitness center usage was significant once. Odds ratios for the predictor variables revealed that four out of five were positively associated with retention for each academic year. The results from this study add to the existing body of literature that explores the relationship between various types of campus recreation and year-over-year retention. Additionally, these results demonstrate a link between social events and year-over-year retention.

Book The Value of Recreational Sports in Higher Education

Download or read book The Value of Recreational Sports in Higher Education written by National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (U.S.) and published by Human Kinetics Publishers. This book was released on 2004 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What attracts students to a college--academics? recreational sports? the campus recreation center? If you selected all three answers, you are right. Most students choose a college or university for its academic merits, but another key factor in their decision is the recreational sports programs and facilities. Recreational sports are an important component to students' quality of life on campus and to a college's recruitment and retention of students. The National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association contracted Kerr-Downs Research Associates to conduct a nationwide research project to determine the value of recreational sport on college campuses. More than 2,600 students from 16 colleges participated in this study, making it the largest representative group of college students from multiple colleges ever studied with respect to the value of participation in recreational sports. This study examined the value and contributions of recreational sports to participants' lives and documented the buying power of participants in recreational sports. The first of its kind in research, The Value of Recreational Sports in Higher Education makes a strong the case for campus recreational sports programs and facilities that will support the mission of your college into the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of soaring tuition costs, more and more students go to college every year. A bachelor’s degree is now required for entry into a growing number of professions. And some parents begin planning for the expense of sending their kids to college when they’re born. Almost everyone strives to go, but almost no one asks the fundamental question posed by Academically Adrift: are undergraduates really learning anything once they get there? For a large proportion of students, Richard Arum and Josipa Roksa’s answer to that question is a definitive no. Their extensive research draws on survey responses, transcript data, and, for the first time, the state-of-the-art Collegiate Learning Assessment, a standardized test administered to students in their first semester and then again at the end of their second year. According to their analysis of more than 2,300 undergraduates at twenty-four institutions, 45 percent of these students demonstrate no significant improvement in a range of skills—including critical thinking, complex reasoning, and writing—during their first two years of college. As troubling as their findings are, Arum and Roksa argue that for many faculty and administrators they will come as no surprise—instead, they are the expected result of a student body distracted by socializing or working and an institutional culture that puts undergraduate learning close to the bottom of the priority list. Academically Adrift holds sobering lessons for students, faculty, administrators, policy makers, and parents—all of whom are implicated in promoting or at least ignoring contemporary campus culture. Higher education faces crises on a number of fronts, but Arum and Roksa’s report that colleges are failing at their most basic mission will demand the attention of us all.

Book Best Practices in Collegiate Outdoor Recreation

Download or read book Best Practices in Collegiate Outdoor Recreation written by Christina Spohn and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: College outdoor recreation programs serve as a way for students to engage outside of the classroom, recreate with friends new and old, and build skills and relationships in beautiful places. These programs have a rich history in the United States, but are not without the challenges of adapting to the changing nature of post-secondary campus recreation operations. The purpose of this study was to further explore the themes generated from exploratory research at Penn State and assess if they were applicable to a broader range of college and university outdoor programs across the country. From the exploratory research, five core themes were identified as areas in which programs triumph and struggle: a) programming, b) organizational structure, c) financing, d) student leadership, and e) risk management. These five themes were subsequently incorporated as open-ended questions in a survey distributed to outdoor program leaders at thirteen U.S. public colleges and universities with more than 10,000 undergraduate students. The results from this survey illustrate the diversity of campus-based outdoor programming across the country. Yet, respondents mentioned similar challenges in areas such as academic relevancy, safety and staff training, availability of resources to provide professional staffing, and desire to engage as many students as possible. Outdoor programs need to prove their worth and provide for students if they are to stay viable within their respective campus recreation programs. While the results from this study represent just a small sampling of schools, programs and ideas, they may inform future efforts to foster collaboration between universities (and within universities) in order to implement best practices for the benefit of students.

Book Extracurricular Adventure Programming in Higher Education

Download or read book Extracurricular Adventure Programming in Higher Education written by Lance A. Plank and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Colleges and universities across the United States continue to struggle with student retention (Wolfe & Kay, 2011; Tinto, 1993; Astin, 1993). The use of extracurricular activities in higher education has been one route in addressing this issue (Tinto, 1993; Lang, 2001-2002; Hall, 2006). Many colleges continue to incorporate outdoor adventure programs as an option for campus recreation (Bentley, 2005; Festeu, 2002). Outdoor recreation has become a component of American society and its popularity continues to increase. Outdoor adventure programs offered by colleges and universities across the United States represent another area of recent growth (Attarian, 2001). While a number of works have addressed leisure motivation in outdoor settings (Anderson, Anderson, & Young, 2000; Driver, 1977; 2008; Driver, Tarrant, & Manfredo, 1991; Ewert, 1985; 1993; Ewert, & Hollenhorst, 1989; Manfredo, Driver, & Tarrant, 1996; Manning, 2011; Sugerman, 2001), a gap exists with respect to students in college based adventure programs. The purpose of this study was to investigate the perceived climbing motivations of students enrolled in instructor based climbing classes, at a university climbing wall. This study only found a significant difference in one of its three hypotheses. No significant difference was found between gender or participation level, but there was a significant difference for the participants between experience level. This study also briefly addressed the relation between the climbing wall program and student retention. By understanding the elements involved in participating in college climbing classes, this research provides empirical evidence for management decision making. These decisions could include changes and improvements in courses offered and even marketing strategies for the climbing wall. Motives were measured with the implementation of a survey questionnaire. In addition to recording personal information, the questionnaire contained the Recreation Experience Preference (REP) scales developed by Driver (1983). The REP scales have been used in a number of outdoor recreation areas, as well as in college outdoor adventure programs (Bentley, 2005). For this study, the survey was administered to students enrolled in instructor based climbing classes at Eastern Washington University's climbing wall. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data and determine statistical significance. Descriptive statistics were used to investigate participant differences in motives. Two types of inferential statistics were run. First, multiple MANOVAs were used to investigate if there are any significant differences across experience level, participation level, and gender. Second, two stepwise multiple regressions were run to determine if any ofthe REP scales could predict experience level or participation level"--Document.
