Book Efficacy of In school Suspension Practices in Selected Texas Schools with Character Education Programs

Download or read book Efficacy of In school Suspension Practices in Selected Texas Schools with Character Education Programs written by Mark Randall McDonald and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In-school suspension (ISS) is widely used in schools, but its efficacy in deterring future misbehavior has long been suspect. Early writings on ISS indicate that the programs were expected to have a character-building aspect to them, but such aspects appear to be missing from current ISS programs. Concurrently, an increased emphasis in character education appears evident. This study questioned the extent to which ISS at schools that practice some form of character education promotes the social and academic success of students. To gauge that effectiveness, a qualitative multiple-case study was conducted. Interviews and site visits were conducted at three West Texas schools during the spring semester of the 2013-14 school year. Administrators, teachers, parents, and students were interviewed to determine their perceptions of ISS and its efficacy. Observations and descriptions of the programs as given by participants were compared to those of early writers, including a specific description given by Hayes Mizell (1978), to determine whether ISS was being practiced according to its earlier ideals. The study found that ISS in schools where character education was practiced was moderately effective in promoting the social success of assigned students, but was ineffective in promoting their academic success. Schools in this study were found to partially adhered to the principles espoused by Mizell (1978). Various affective and functional factors could have an impact on ISS efficacy as a punitive measure. Participants were divided on their assessment of ISS. Almost all participants supportive of character education efforts, but many recognized the importance of consistent expectations and reinforcement.

Book A Guide to In School Suspension Programs Using the Counseling Handbook

Download or read book A Guide to In School Suspension Programs Using the Counseling Handbook written by Gregory O. Myers and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-04-01 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will be a guide to assisting disruptive students who are constantly being placed in IN School; Suspension without a road map paved for them to be successful. As a school teacher and administrator for the past 24 years, I have noticed students being placed in ISS Programs without any form of therapeutic treatment designed to assist them. This book reveals research study by various authors who have worked in the education setting through out the United States. The book will be a guide for students who are labeled as repeaters in the ISSP, that the their behaviors can be modified using the counseling handbook. As we try to improve our form of educating young people in America, schools have to cope with classroom behaviors, and violence to make sure no child is left behind in receiving an optimal level of education in the 21st century. The book uses an approach that keeps students in schools and keeps them from receiving OSS as an alternative punishment. Students see OSS as a way of being out of the education setting and being at home without any form of education taking place. This book will assist school officials to guide ISS repeaters in the right direction and prevent obstacles from causing them to excel.

Book School Suspension and Academic Achievement for Tenth and Eleventh Grade Male Students

Download or read book School Suspension and Academic Achievement for Tenth and Eleventh Grade Male Students written by Dante' L Ferguson (Sr.) and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this correlational study was to examine the relationship between absenteeism due to suspensions and math and reading scores from the 2016 – 2017 Georgia Milestones Test for tenth and eleventh grade regular education, male students. The focus of this study was on determining if math and reading scores on standardized tests could be predicted by the number of days missed from school due to suspensions using a bivariate regression. A total of 93 male high school students in grades ten and eleven who have received one or more out of school suspensions during the previous school term were randomly selected from 4 high schools in a suburban metro Atlanta school district. A bivariate regression analysis was used in this study. The results of the analysis showed a significant but weak negative correlation between days missed from school due to OSS and EOC analytic geometry and American Literature scores on the Georgia Milestones Assessment. This study may have implications for national school discipline policies in that the data may indicate a need for educational leaders to provide additional training for teachers and policy makers to take a closer look at the negative impact of zero tolerance policies in schools.

Download or read book Dropping Out written by Russell W. Rumberger and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2011-10-15 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vast majority of kids in the developed world finish high school—but not in the United States. More than a million kids drop out every year, around 7,000 a day, and the numbers are rising. Dropping Out offers a comprehensive overview by one of the country’s leading experts, and provides answers to fundamental questions: Who drops out, and why? What happens to them when they do? How can we prevent at-risk kids from short-circuiting their futures? Students start disengaging long before they get to high school, and the consequences are severe—not just for individuals but for the larger society and economy. Dropouts never catch up with high school graduates on any measure. They are less likely to find work at all, and more likely to live in poverty, commit crimes, and suffer health problems. Even life expectancy for dropouts is shorter by seven years than for those who earn a diploma. Russell Rumberger advocates targeting the most vulnerable students as far back as the early elementary grades. And he levels sharp criticism at the conventional definition of success as readiness for college. He argues that high schools must offer all students what they need to succeed in the workplace and independent adult life. A more flexible and practical definition of achievement—one in which a high school education does not simply qualify you for more school—can make school make sense to young people. And maybe keep them there.
