Book Rockets and People Volume I NASA History Series NASA Sp 2005 4110

Download or read book Rockets and People Volume I NASA History Series NASA Sp 2005 4110 written by Boris Chertok and published by Military Bookshop. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been written in the West on the history of the Soviet space program, but few Westerners have read direct first-hand accounts of the men and women who were behind the many Russian accomplishments in exploring space. The memoir of academician Boris Chertok, translated from the original Russian, fills that gap. Chertok began his career as an electrician in 1930 at an aviation factory near Moscow. Thirty years later, he was deputy to the founding figure of the Soviet space program, the mysterious "Chief Designer" Sergey Korolev. Chertok's 60-year-long career and the many successes and failures of the Soviet space program constitute the core of his memoirs, Rockets and People. In these writings, spread over four volumes (volumes two through four are forthcoming), academician Chertok not only describes and remembers, but also elicits and extracts profound insights from an epic story about a society's quest to explore the cosmos. This book was edited by Asif Siddiqi, a historian of Russian space exploration, and General Tom Stafford contributed a foreword touching upon his significant work with the Russians on the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project. Overall, this book is an engaging read while also contributing much new material to the literature about the Soviet space program.

Its announced purpose: to carry humanity away from its ruined world, from the world that had become a perpetual purgatory. To build this vast ship would require the undivided activity of an entire nation and would mean carrying out a ruthless program of war and conquest, of annihilation and reconstruction, and of education and rediscovery. But was this starship really what it was claimed to be? Or was there a greater secret behind its incredible cost - a secret so strange that no man dared reveal it?

Book The People s Spaceship

  • Author : Amy Paige Kaminski
  • Publisher : University of Pittsburgh Press
  • Release : 2025-07-15
  • ISBN : 0822989727
  • Pages : 406 pages

Download or read book The People s Spaceship written by Amy Paige Kaminski and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2025-07-15 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Apollo 11 astronauts returned from humanity’s first voyage to the moon in 1969, NASA officials advocated for more ambitious missions. But with the civil rights movement, environmental concerns, the Vietnam War, and other social crises taking up much of the public’s attention, they lacked the support to make those ambitions a reality. Instead, the space agency had to think more modestly and pragmatically, crafting a program that could leverage the excitement of Apollo while promising relevance for average Americans. The resulting initiative, the space shuttle, would become the centerpiece of NASA human space flight activity for forty years, opening opportunities for the public to engage with and participate in space projects in new ways. The People’s Spaceship traces how and why NASA painstakingly connected the vehicle to so many segments of society. Underscoring the successes and challenges endured in the process, Amy Paige Kaminski shares the story of how the space shuttle became an American technological icon.

Book Spaceships of the Pleiades

Download or read book Spaceships of the Pleiades written by Kal K. Korff and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2010-08-05 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The case of Eduard "Billy" Meier has gained worldwide attention for his claims of being in "on-going contact" with aliens from the star cluster known as the Pleiades. Purported to be the most documented UFO account of all time, Meier''s files consist of 1,000 photographs and 12 motion picture films of the visiting spacecraft. Through thousands of pages of "contact notes," Meier claims to have "passed on" the wisdom and advanced technical knowledge from his conversations with these aliens, designed to help guide our evolution. In addition, he alleges that 40 independent eyewitnesses have also seen the alien ships and observed Meier''s contacts with them. The aliens also "left" numerous "landing tracks" in the ground, and gave Meier various rock, metal, mineral, and crystal samples as "proof" of their visitations.Author Kal Korff conducted the most thorough examination ever into the case of Billy Meier and all its alleged evidence, and reveals here how a Swiss farmer hatched and continues to maintain the most elaborate UFO hoax in history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professionally, I am a neurologist, but ever since I was fourteen years old, I have been passionate, first about mathematics, then about physics. I won the annual prize for mathematics when I graduated from high school and my nickname in high school, given to me by my fellow students, was "Newton". I did my bachelor's in science in physics before going into medicine. I graduated with the highest distinction in physics and was a member of the National Physics Honor Society as an undergraduate. I won the annual Professor Abel's Memorial Award for physics upon my graduation. I am a member of the American Mensa Society. Even during my training as a neurologist and while working as a neurologist, physics continued to stay with me as a hobby. I kept up with the latest news in physics through the television programs and the popular science magazines, to the extent that was possible, given the extremely busy professional and family life. I always had a lot of ideas regarding various branches of physics, especially cosmology, but, I did not had the time to put them on paper and develop them, in a logical manner, into a paper worthy for publication. However, by G-D's Will, I had a gap of free time, between switching jobs, that finally allowed me to put my thoughts on paper. I found that, they not only made physical sense, but also had merit, which made me consider publishing them for a wider audience. I continue to practice neurology in New York State where I live with my wife and our two children.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prepare yourself for a journey through the world of Patton Oswalt, one of the most creative, insightful, and hysterical voices on the entertainment scene today. Widely known for his roles in the films Big Fan and Ratatouille, as well as the television hit The King of Queens, Patton Oswalt—a staple of Comedy Central—has been amusing audiences for decades. Now, with Zombie Spaceship Wasteland, he offers a fascinating look into his most unusual, and lovable, mindscape. Oswalt combines memoir with uproarious humor, from snow forts to Dungeons & Dragons to gifts from Grandma that had to be explained. He remembers his teen summers spent working in a movie Cineplex and his early years doing stand-up. Readers are also treated to several graphic elements, including a vampire tale for the rest of us and some greeting cards with a special touch. Then there’s the book’s centerpiece, which posits that before all young creative minds have anything to write about, they will home in on one of three story lines: zombies, spaceships, or wastelands. Oswalt chose wastelands, and ever since he has been mining our society’s wasteland for perversion and excess, pop culture and fatty foods, indie rock and single-malt scotch. Zombie Spaceship Wasteland is an inventive account of the evolution of Patton Oswalt’s wildly insightful worldview, sure to indulge his legion of fans and lure many new admirers to his very entertaining “wasteland.”

Book excerpt: Without question, this is a classic by one of the most exciting new authors in the UFO field today. After reading it, your view of reality will never be the same. The owl has held a place of reverence and mystique throughout history. And as strange as this might seem, owls are also showing up in conjunction with the UFO experience.Mike Clelland has collected a wealth of first-hand accounts in which owls manifest in the highly charged moments that surround alien contact. There is a strangeness to these accounts that defy simple explanations. This book explores implications that go far beyond what more conservative researchers would dare consider. But the owl connection encompasses more than the UFO experience. It also includes profound synchronicities, ancient archetypes, dreams, shamanistic experiences, personal transformation, and death. From the mythic legends of our ancient past to the first-hand accounts of the UFO abductee, owls are playing some vital role. This is also a deeply personal story. It is an odyssey of self-discovery as the author grapples with his own owl and UFO encounters. What plays out is a story of transformation with the owl at the heart of this journey.
