Book excerpt: For nearly a century, the symbol of the American melting pot enjoyed considerable popularity. Bruce M. Stave and John F. Sutherland explore this and other concepts in an oral history comprising the voices of European immigrants to Connecticut. Both practicing oral historians, their interviews join others conducted by the Works Progress Administration in the 1930s, providing readers with a perspective of at least three generations of immigrant experience, including the role that the family unit played, both economically and socially. Of special interest is the place held by immigrant women in the new world, as traditional relationships between men and women, and within families, began to change.

Book The Common Freedom of the People

Download or read book The Common Freedom of the People written by Michael Braddick and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-26 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second son of a modest gentry family, John Lilburne was accused of treason four times, and put on trial for his life under both Charles I and Oliver Cromwell. He fought bravely in the Civil War, seeing action at a number of key battles and rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, was shot through the arm, and nearly lost an eye in a pike accident. In the course of all this, he fought important legal battles for the rights to remain silent, to open trial, and to trial by his peers. He was twice acquitted by juries in very public trials, but nonetheless spent the bulk of his adult life in prison or exile. He is best known, however, as the most prominent of the Levellers, who campaigned for a government based on popular sovereignty two centuries before the advent of mass representative democracies in Europe. Michael Braddick explores the extraordinary and dramatic life of 'Freeborn John': how his experience of political activism sharpened and clarified his ideas, leading him to articulate bracingly radical views; and the changes in English society that made such a career possible. Without land, established profession, or public office, successive governments found him sufficiently alarming to be worth imprisoning, sending into exile, and putting on trial for his life. Above all, through his story, we can explore the life not just of John Lilburne, but of revolutionary England itself — and of ideas fundamental to the radical, democratic, libertarian, and constitutional traditions, both in Britain and the USA.

Book Essays and Reviews

    Book Details:
  • Author : Victor Shea
  • Publisher : University of Virginia Press
  • Release : 2000
  • ISBN : 9780813918693
  • Pages : 1092 pages

Download or read book Essays and Reviews written by Victor Shea and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 1092 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essays and Reviews is a collection of seven articles that appeared in 1860, sparking a Victorian culture war that lasted for at least a decade. With pieces written by such prominent Oxford and Cambridge intellectuals as Benjamin Jowett, Mark Pattison, Baden Powell, and Frederick Temple (later archbishop of Canterbury), the volume engaged the relations between religious faith and current topics of the day in education, the classics, theology, science, history, literature, biblical studies, hermeneutics, philology, politics, and philosophy. Upon publication, the church, the university, the press, the government, and the courts, both ecclesiastical and secular, joined in an intense dispute. The book signaled an intellectual and religious crisis, raised influential issues of free speech, and questioned the authority and control of the Anglican Church in Victorian society. The collection became a best-seller and led to three sensational heresy trials. Although many historians and literary critics have identified Essays and Reviews as a pivotal text of high Victorianism, until now it has been almost inaccessible to modern readers. This first critical edition, edited by Victor Shea and William Whitla, provides extensive annotation to map the various positions on the controversies that the book provoked. The editors place the volume in its complex social context and supply commentary, background materials, composition and publishing history, textual notes, and a broad range of new supporting documents, including material from the trials, manifestos, satires, and contemporary illustrations. Not only does such an annotated critical edition of Essays and Reviews indicate the impact that the volume had on Victorian society; it also sheds light on our own contemporary cultural institutions and controversies.

Book A Cultural Sociology of Anglican Mission and the Indian Residential Schools in Canada

Download or read book A Cultural Sociology of Anglican Mission and the Indian Residential Schools in Canada written by Eric Taylor Woods and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-14 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the recurring struggle over the meaning of the Anglican Church’s role in the Indian residential schools--a long-running school system designed to assimilate Indigenous children into Euro-Canadian culture, in which sexual, psychological, and physical abuse were common. From the end of the nineteenth century until the outset of twenty-first century, the meaning of the Indian residential schools underwent a protracted transformation. Once a symbol of the Church’s sacred mission to Christianize and civilize Indigenous children, they are now associated with colonialism and suffering. In bringing this transformation to light, the book addresses why the Church was so quick to become involved in the Indian residential schools and why acknowledgment of their deleterious impact was so protracted. In doing so, the book adds to our understanding of the sociological process by which perpetrators come to recognize themselves as such.
