Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The People's Faith in the Time of Wyclif The List of Books is intended to serve one purpose only, to elucidate the footnotes. It is not a catalogue of books consulted nor the beginning of a bibliography. One thing remains to be done, and that the pleasantest of all, I cannot deny myself the privilege of recording my gratitude for the help that has been given to me. To the Adjudicators of the Thirlwall Prize, especially to Professor Bury and Dr Rose, I owe particular thanks for the great consideration which they showed to me when I was placed in somewhat difficult circumstances. To Dr Foakes Jackson and Mr G. G. Coulton the essay owes more than I can say, but not more, I hope, than I can be grateful for. The extent of their patience and kindness can be measured only by those who have trespassed as often and as shamelessly as I have done. And, if I may venture to do so, I should like to express my warm thanks to Mr R. V. Laurence, Dr J. N. Figgis, Mr G. Lapsley, and Mr G. G. Butler, who gave me direction and advice when I was about to set out on the work; to the Master of Jesus, Sir Arthur QuillerCouch, and Mr C. E. Sayle for suggestions of various kinds; to Sir John Sandys and Mr E.Harrison for help in the last stages of the book; and to Mr A. R. Waller and to the readers of the University Press for the many corrections and improvements which they have suggested, as also for the indulgence with which they have treated me at a time when my attention has of necessity been given to other work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wycliffe was known as the MORNING STAR of the Reformation; a star rising upon a new day. Wickliffe (or Wycliffe) was born in 1330 AD and died in 1384. He attended Oxford University, receiving his doctorate in 1372. Most of his life was spent teaching at Oxford, and studying God’s Word in Oxford’s extensive library. He was a brilliant scholar who mastered the late medieval scholastic tradition, and was recognized by John of Guant (The Duke of Lancaster) as one who was extraordinarily gifted in theology and preaching. Not only was he an able clergyman, but he was also involved in state affairs. Wickliffe performed diplomatic duties for the crown, and wrote extensively on supporting civil government. This is one of the few biographies that exist on the life of Wickliffe.

Book The Bible Convictions of John Wycliffe

Download or read book The Bible Convictions of John Wycliffe written by Steven J Lawson and published by . This book was released on 2024-01-23 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourteenth century was a dark time for the church in England. Superstition and error obscured the truth of the gospel, and even the clergy had little knowledge of the Bible. Against this bleak backdrop, God raised up a scholar and preacher who would stand with conviction on His Word, even if it meant standing alone. Trusting Scripture as his highest authority, John Wycliffe believed the Bible was what England needed most. Only through the Word of God would the Holy Spirit reform hearts and, in turn, reform the church. But for this to happen, Wycliffe knew that everyday people needed to have the Bible in their own language. In The Bible Convictions of John Wycliffe, Dr. Steven Lawson tells how Wycliffe's devotion to the gospel made him the forerunner of the Reformation who translated the Bible into English for the first time. We're indebted to him for our English Bibles today, and his story can encourage us to establish our convictions on God's Word. This book is part of the Long Line of Godly Men Profile series, edited by Dr. Steven Lawson.
